It's a sad celebration because theatres had to be shut down to protect people from the health crisis!
But the theatre people have responded in many ways -- by holding online concerts, online benefits, etc.. to keep the theatrical tradition going...and most importantly to highlight the power of music in our lives!
One of my favorite theatre people is Michael Ball - whom I discovered while singing the part of Marius in the Original Recording of Les Misérables. I have seen him in many shows over the years. He is mostly a leading man in the UK but has graced Broadway twice & did Gilbert/Sullivan's Patience at LCT...It seems he is returning to the role of Edna Turnblad in the UK - for a role which has won him an Olivier. His first Olivier which I also saw was as the poet Hajj in the revival of Kismet by the English National Opera. He was also the second Raoul in Phantom of the Opera ( and legend says that ALWebber adjusted some of the notes upwards for a Raoul song because Michael, who does not read music, sang it at a higher key), Sweeney Todd, Passion ( Sondheim rewrote a song to give his powerful voice more material to work with), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Woman In White, Mack and Mabel...and of course my favorite Aspects of Love. He is quite a theatre thespian! He is the only theatre veteran I know who has sang the roles of Marius, Javert, and Valjean ( at Windsor Castle, upon invitation to entertain the Queen and her guest at a state dinner, the French Prime Minister). You may also remember that Michael annotated the world premiere ceremonies for the LES MISERABLES film adaptation ( Hugh Jackman/RussellCrowe/AnneHathaway) in London. I remember Eddie Redmayne paying homage to him, for being the original Marius
With his involvement in the theatre, he is an excellent ambassador to greet fans worldwide on this day!
Here is his message on World Theatre Day!

Happy World Theatre Day to Everyone!
Let's cross our fingers that the bright lights of the theatre will be back... not just on Broadway or the West End...but all over the world where it enjoys a special spot in the hearts of many!
Also quite a coincidence that on the same day, Oklahoma! ( Jackman version) will air for everyone. Oklahoma! is generally considered as the landmark American musical and it is fitting that we celebrate today with its special screening.
And not to forget the dramatic or comedic plays that have also kept us entertained, given us many thoughts to ponder, and stole the spotlight for outstanding and sometimes electrifying performances!
