Maybe a thread to discuss the musical score of the show?
We are very far off from an original cast recording which should be forthcoming --
what about putting up the many versions of songs from the show that have become part of popular culture?
May I start off with 'TIL THERE WAS YOU - apart from the many stage production recordings and from the movie, I never realized how many versions have been recorded, sometimes by unlikely performers to sing the song.
We're familiar with the story of how Paul McCartney stumbled on the music and started singing it and eventually recording it, turning it into one of the Beatles best hits.
But here are other versions, from known and not very well known performers.
Let me start with this choral rendition --

Peggy Lee - who recorded one of the very earliest versions!
If I am not mistaken, it was Peggy Lee's version that Paul McCartney first heard played on his cousin's music box. It prompted him to sing it, even recorded it, without realizing it came from The Music Man.

The very first recording of the song ( then called TIL I MET YOU) - before the show was staged on Broadway.

'Til There Was You
There were bells on a hill But I never heard them ringing No, I never heard them at all 'Til there was you
There were birds in the sky But I never saw them winging No, I never saw them at all 'Til there was you
Then there was music and wonderful roses They tell me In sweet fragrant meadows Of dawn and dew There was love all around But I never heard it singing No, I never heard it at all 'Til there was you
Then there was music and wonderful roses They tell me In sweet fragrant meadows Of dawn and dew There was love all around But I never heard it singing No, I never heard it at all 'Til there was you 'Til there was you

Have you ever wondered why the Opening Number is called the Rock Island Overture/Opening Number. I did -- because I did not know that the train where the salesmen sang a cappella was named ROCK ISLAND RAILROAD Jo

From the 2000 revival -- at the TONY Awards! With Craig Bierko -- I like both Broderick and McCormack. I am not familiar with Craig Bierko but I am far more impressed with him in this role than the others. I'm sorry I missed this. Thanks for posting the clip. I'll check YouTube for more of him.

So, what would Hugh Jackman do to make sure his rendition of SEVENTY SIX TROMBONES is spectacular, remarkable and memorable?? Maybe he could come out dressed like this -- Let's look at the personalities -- *Bierko - affable fellow *McCormack- mugging too much *Matthew - lost schoolboy *Preston - lovable crook *Jackman - sexy, affable, lovable crook Just kidding Jo

TROUBLE! YA GOT TROUBLE!
That is the quintessential Robert Preston performance that elevated the stage production and the movie to its memorable status ( and got Preston the role).

I couldn't find any show clip for TROUBLE for Craig Bierko.
But he performed the number elsewhere --
(Any luck, Valerie, on this number?)

Some non-stage actors have also performed this number ( as it does not really involve singing...but more of patter)
Like Seth Mcfarlane here ( and also Conan O'Brien) --

"Till There Was You" was covered by Anita Bryant in 1959 as a single for Carlton Records, reaching #30 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1963, The Beatles covered "Till There Was You" on their second LP With the Beatles (issued on Meet the Beatles! in the United States). Willson's widow later told The New York Times that his estate made more money from the royalties of the Beatles' recordings of "Till There Was You" than it did from the musical.
Paul McCartney’s company MPL also administers the songs from some of the most successful Broadway musicals including A Chorus Line, Hello Dolly!, Annie, Grease, Guys and Dolls and The Music Man.Nov 13, 2012
