I recall that Family Guy episode from early 2006. Show creator Seth MacFarland is an avowed fan of musical theater, and it shows in several episodes of his edgy, animated comedic series. Some of the choreography in this episode is a loving homage to Onna White’s choreography in the 1962 movie version, especially in the latter part where the Peter Griffin character holds the cheerleader tightly while swaying back and forth. I remember laughing aloud at the replication of the swaying movements in the men’s room urinals. Family Guy could be controversial but it usually made me laugh.

There is part of the couple choreography which reminded me of how Peter and Marian danced together (is that the Oona White choreography of the couple dancing in unison?)

It is getting a bit sad... as the end of the run draws closer. In this post, the "Sheriff" reminisces how the "little Iowans" have grown and blossomed! It was around late 2019/early 2020 when casting of the young performers started. They also waited with bated breath during the first half of the pandemic& through the Scott Rudin crisis & the general uncertainty of Broadway's return. Some even worried that by the time the show was ready to be staged, they might have grown out ( become too tall for the role) of the roles. Rehearsals, previews and Opening Night finally came... Some have gone. New replacements have come in. Who knows how many will become adult Broadway performers or find other careers in the entertainment industry? Jo http://instagram.com/p/Cl1kcAaJvi2

Given the happy tone of the show and the glow of faces of audiences when they leave the Winter Garden -- Apart from leading the band... leading the fund-raising for BC/EFA... Hugh Jackman also led a show which seemed to have gone some ways in lessening the emotional impact of people drawn apart by the pandemic! Seeing the show is like a tonic -- after all the isolation and difficulties of coping with the pandemic. In a sense, the show has become an event for joyful celebration -- of families and the community of theatregoers. It is probably far-fetched -- but if it can be suggested to Hugh and producers (the billionaires) to film the revival -- it will add to the wealth of filmed entertainment that can be a source of joy over the holidays - from Thanksgiving to New Year! I thought it is interesting to compare the attitude towards the show by the critics on Opening Night, compared to the emerging appreciation of the show -- I think a critic should not fully reflect his preferences -- but his basis should be the standards of the day. Comparing TMM -past with TMM-present should take into consideration the present-day audiences profile and preferences. I don't think the bamboozle style of Preston's crowd persuasion will work in today's more knowledgeable and more outspoken audiences. Many critics did not give Hugh's more beguiling style a chance - how come it is working on today's audiences ( if receipts and social media comments are to go by...and to some extent the response to the fund-raising)?? Standards may modify, depending on present-day culture and mores. It seems to me that many critics were biased from the beginning. The Hugh-Harold chose to beguile the kids, not the parents...while Preston appealed brashly to the parents's pride of their kids. The kids in the present-day version may have persuaded their parents to go along because they fell in love with the Pied Piper's call And kids in today's cultural mode have minds of their own...and can persuade parents to their way of thinking compared to the past. Today, even in their early youth - they express what they want to do with their lives...and parents are much more respectful of their kids's preferences. A revival is an excellent way to incorporate changes in societal standards and preferences. Jo

The emphasis on the kids must have been the creative idea of Jerry Zaks. To pursue a Pied Piper theme. After all, the Pied Piper was not a good person either - with bad motivations, just as Harold Hill had self-serving interests at the start. That Warren Carlyle was able to fit the choreography to show off the wooing by Hill is another brilliant creative innovation in this revival. Hence that fantastic "76 TROMBONES" production number in the show! That they chose it to fit Hugh's existing and nascent talent ( dance), that Sutton was particularly targetted for this Marian despite not being the type of soprano originally intended by Willson, that a massive number of kids were put into the cast -- the intentions were telegraphed early...but I guess it wasn't so obvious at first. Both ideas were grand -- the Pied Piper theme...and the emphasis on how Hill will "persuade" the town & Marian's heart. Thus the sense of community developed... starting with how the kids responded to the call for "unity" ( a band!)...then the town coming together as they see the effect of the excitement over a project that will show off their kids...then Hill's subtle ( but not kindly) ways of putting them together : the singing quartet/the chip-chip-chip ladies & Eulalie to his side / Winthrop&ProfHill/ Winthrop & his family, etc). How can many of the critics not see that?? They were likely influenced by : *strong aversion to Rudin & how Opening Night invitations were handled *jealousy of Hugh Jackman, who has been considered a relative interloper on Broadway by the purists & many of the chatterati. *loyalty to the Preston original show The audiences saw it...and the sense of joy produced by the cast was even more motivated when they saw how the audiences had responded. To see the show continue to have massive support, even at very high ticket prices, must have been the impact of very strong word of mouth on the level of audience satisfaction that showgoers had telegraphed to people they know! I hope Hugh Jackman realizes the role he has played into all this Jo

Something that Mitch Albom said about seeing "Winthrop" play the cornet solo... made me rethink what that moment meant. I have seen the show a few times... and I have always thought that the Winthrop solo was meant to give Hugh and Sutton time to change to their gold&white costume for the post-finale tap dance. But what Mitch said -- made me rethink it as the moment that symbolizes the triumph of a child's journey from slight depression to full enjoyment of boyhood... also as symbolic that good things can come out of bad beginnings ( Prof Hill never expected the band of young boys to be able to play music, not just as something that they simply "think" about but that they eventually learned to play good music.). Maybe that was what it was meant to be Jo

There seemed to be an interruption ( mechanical problems with the set?) -- being theatrical old hands, Hugh and Shuler had to improvise Jo

The irony -- many anti-Jackman chatterati snob him because he is a film star!
But improvisation is one of the skills when one is an actor from the stage. Theatre-trained!
Hugh has proven time and again why he is a great entertainer and a theatrical attraction!
