Just announced: this year’s Tony Awards ceremony will take place on June 12 at Radio City Music Hall.
Some likely hopes shared on this forum: that THE MUSIC MAN will be nominated for Best Musical Revival and HJ will likewise get a nod for Best Actor in a Musical. Icing on the cake would be noms also for Sutton Foster, Shuler H., Jefferson Mays and Jayne Houdyshell along with the creatives (Jerry Zaks, Warren Carlyle et. al).
If MM is nominated, I fervently hope “Marian the Librarian” in all its intricate complexity, cleverness and playfulness will be performed on the great stage of Radio City Music Hall.

Not the Tonys -- but the Oliviers!

To Kill A Mockingbird was snubbed not presumably because it "was too big to fail" ...but the hate-Rudin factor plus some animosity over the new version of the play must have been the bigger issue on why the show was snubbed. TKAM rewrote box office records for straight plays in B'way history In Hugh's case -- maybe it is good to remember that a second Tony was given to him by the American Theatre Wing ( which sponsors the Tony Awards) because of his work for BC/EFA but also because his much celebrated show at that time ( Back On Broadway) could not qualify as a Musical. Hopefully, when the Tony voters come and see/see again the show, the jubilant audience reaction ( well and regularly lauded on social media) will leave them with the impression that that is what counts, not what some critics or the hate/envy Jackman brigade on B'way say Hopefully, the show will be recognized as the show that is leading the way for the return of the bright lights of Broadway. Let's keep those weekly receipts coming -- they will likely be even more eye-popping with the onset of the spring and summer months...and the return of tourists! Hopefully, the support for BC/EFA will also be remarkable! And reading about the increasingly lengthening RUSH lines early in the morning daily -- the word of mouth is working! Maybe there is some parallel with The Greatest Showman ... and look at how that turned out! Jo

www.broadwayleague.com/research/grosses-broadway-nyc/Gross receipts for THE MUSIC MAN are holding steady at USD 3.335 million ( for the week ending April 3,2022) ! A distant second is Hamilton at USD 2.285 million! If this is an indication of massive audience support, then those TONYlorogists at Gold Derby had better start acting less like that Critic from The Greatest Showman! Jo

Ouch! The Drama Desk nominations came out today. Unfortunately, Hugh was conspicuous for his absence on the Best Actor in a Musical category. Spivey, Crystal, Frost, McClure repeat their Tony noms plus Chip Zien from Harmony. (These awards cover Off Broadway too). I really liked Zien but wish there had been room for Hugh as well. . In fact, the only Music Man nom I see is for Santo Loquasto for costumes. Ellen

The revival itself was also ignored. And so were Tony nominees Sutton & Jayne They simply do not want most anything from The Music Man to be recognized And Katrina Lenk ("Company" lead) as well. Jo
