It's making me very nervous and very excited at the same time.

The Music Man calendar has these dates blank at the moment --

La Biennale di Venezia is scheduled from Aug 31 to Sept 10, 2022.

Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled from Sept 8 to 18, 2022.

Telluride Lineup Taking Shape ..

Every year, the curation at the Telluride Film Festival is almost second-to-none. If you want a good idea of what quality films to expect this fall season then what Telluride head Julie Huntsinger and her team select is the way to go.

With the TIFF announcement coming, along with premiere statuses, we can somewhat scroll through the TIFF lineup and look for labels such as “Canadian Premiere” and “International Premiere” for better clues.

Michael Patterson’s Telluride prediction blog will probably be all over this later today, but I’ll get a head-start. This is how Telluride looks right now:

As World of Reel‘s Jordan Ruimy pointed out this morning, several hot titles are missing from the just-announced Toronto Film Festival slate — Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s Bardo, Todd Field’s TAR, Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, Paul Schrader’s The Master Gardener and Noah Baumbach’s White Noise.

The media chorus is saying “TIFF is back!” and that’s fine if they want to adopt that attitude, but these six films represent major auteur-level måterial. It’s possible they’ll be announced as TIFF titles down the road, but to me it’s a sign that TIFF has come down two or three notches, esteem-wise.

Non-Attributable Insider: “I think Hollywood has realized it can skip TIFF by doing Venice and Telluride. European/world audience with one, Oscar voters with the other. TIFF is still great for a commercial release like Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. But these are increasingly moving online, right?”

It's a pity that THE SON could not make it to Telluride ( the quality votes).

It could have managed it -- by going to Venice by persuading them to give the movie an early screening berth...then go to Telluride between Sept 2-5... and end up in Toronto towards the end but no later than Sept 11?

I think the practice of requiring that a film be shown for the first time ( world Premiere) or first in Europe ( European premiece), or first in North America (USA/Canada) or first in Canada could have been sorted out.

This is the first year where there seems to be an abundance of riches as far as quality films are concerned and the audiences could have had access to all three key festivals.

I am re-reading the play.

I do not know how Zeller will adapt the ending for the movie... but upon re-reading it, it seems more complex than I had originally thought. Do brutal memories ever fade? Does regret ever lessen over time?

Florian Zeller has confirmed that “The Son” is in the can and ready to go. We even got a first image (above) and an official synopsis from Sony Pictures Classics:

A drama that follows a family as it falls apart and tries to come back together again. This is the place in Southern France called CASSIS where they were supposed to have filmed the scenes of the family when Nicolas was still a little boy ( played by the boy George Cobell - with Hugh in the photo).

I kind of expected this. The role of Nicolas is very dramatic. The Mastroianni award goes to the best young newcomer.

Hope Hugh gets similar attention.

It looks like people are expecting the major players of THE SON to be in the running for awards? As of now, Gold Derby favors predictions for Hugh (Best Actor- #1), Best Adapted Screenplay for Zeller (#1), Vanessa Kirby (Best Supporting Actress - #2), Laura Dern (Best Supporting Actress - #7), Zeller ( Direction & Best Picture - top 10).

It seems it is based mostly on the success of THE FATHER ... and previous reputations of the actors and the roles they will portray in this movie.

I hope the movie does not disappoint!
