They are not selling tickets again for the week Sept 5-12. Early during the run ,this was announced as one of the Jackman leaves of absence. Will it be dark again?

Hugh Jackman is expected to be attending the world premiere on September 7 of his new movie THE SON which will be in competition at the Venice film festival and is also scheduled at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) after its Venice screening. The film is shaping up to be one of the awards season major hopefuls, including acting honors for Jackman. Co-stars are Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, newcomer Zen McGrath & a role for Anthony Hopkins. It is a film adaptation of a celebrated play by Florian Zeller ( Oscar winner for Adapted Screenplay for The Father, same film which won Best Actor Oscar for Hopkins). Zeller's co-winner for The Father and collaborating with him again on The Son , is Christopher Hampton of Sunset Boulevard fame. Hampton is a a major presence in both the film and theatrical worlds'

Writing instructor Charlie (Fraser) never seems to have his webcam enabled while teaching online. He makes excuses and is so good-natured that no one makes a fuss, but the real reason for his invisibility is his appearance. Charlie weighs 600 pounds. His obesity starts to pose a grave threat to his health and his friend Liz (Hong Chau, also at this year’s Festival in The Menu), a nurse, begs him to check into a hospital, but also recognizes that it might be more important to simply offer support.

Charlie’s current status quo is upended by the return of his long-estranged adolescent daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink), though her willingness to resume a relationship seems prompted as much by Charlie’s offers to ghostwrite her school essays as it is by her sense of familial loyalty. Meanwhile, Charlie receives visits from a door-to-door evangelist (Ty Simpkins) who engages him in a dialogue about redemption that, despite Charlie’s lack of religious inclination, proves surprisingly resonant. Can any of these folks, regardless of their personal agendas, serve as the lifeline to self-acceptance that Charlie so urgently needs?

Screenwriter Samuel D. Hunter, here adapting his own play, has already proved himself a compassionate chronicler of offbeat characters with the FX series Baskets. Florian Zeller Mines More Family Trauma With Oscar Hopeful ‘The Son’

There aren’t many filmmakers like Florian Zeller. He’s the rare playwright given a chance to direct the big-screen adaptations of his work. John Patrick Shanley pulled that off with “Doubt,” Aaron Sorkin eventually made the transition from writing “A Few Good Men” to overseeing “Trial of the Chicago 7” and Martin McDonagh has successfully toggled between stage and screen. After that, the list gets thin.

Following the Oscar-winning success of “The Father,” Zeller has found himself in that elite company, and he’s used his newfound clout to bring another play, “The Son,” to the screen. It debuts in Venice before moving to other fall festivals and an eventual U.S. run courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics. And the stories that Zeller is choosing to spin first on stage and now on film are interconnected in many ways. They explore illness and trauma — and the resilient bonds that link families together — with emotional brutality. But Zeller believes that his work has a kind of cathartic effect.


“Great emotions, even when they are cruel or harsh, I find that they’re soothing. Because they allow things stuck in a corner of your soul to come out,” the director told Variety during an hour-long sit-down at Paris’ chic Royal Monceau Hotel. “That’s what cinema is about — to explore one’s pain. It is to me, at least. It reconnects me to my sorrows and helps me heal them.”

“The Son,” written in 2018, is Zeller’s most personal work. It’s part of a trilogy of plays, including “The Mother” and “The Father,” that have been performed around the world. They’re the kind of stories, filled with meaty roles, that have attracted A-list actors. The film adaptation of “The Father” starred Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar for the titular role (Zeller won for adapted screenplay with Christopher Hampton). And “The Son” boasts a cast that includes Oscar nominees and winners including Vanessa Kirby, Laura Dern, Hopkins and Hugh Jackman. The film tackles teenage depression and the shattering impact it has on an affluent New York family.

“The Son,” produced by See-Saw Films and Inthevoid Productions, will be distributed in France by Orange Studio on March 8, and by Leone Film Group in Italy. Embankment Films represents it in international markets.






Unlike “The Father,” which Zeller wrote with Hopkins in mind, the helmer had to be persuaded that Jackman was right for the central role of Peter, a man struggling to help his son while grappling with own his pain caused by a tyrannical father. Jackman pitched himself to Zeller.

“I received an email from Hugh Jackman who tells me, ‘I heard that you’re in the process of working on the adaptation of this play,’” Zeller says. “I know the play, I read it, and if you have already hired an actor, please forget this email, but just know how much I loved your play; but if it’s still open I would like to have a 15-minute meeting with you to explain why I’m the one who should play this role.”

When they met on Zoom, Zeller knew that he had his man. “I saw the man he was as a father and as a son,” he says. He also felt that “there would be the possibility [for Jackman] to do something he hadn’t done before — to be himself in a powerful way, to let true emotions come out, even if it meant to put himself in emotionally difficult places.”




The filmmaker knew that McGrath was right to play the demanding role of Nicholas after watching his audition. “There is something luminous and dark in him,” says Zeller.

Zeller says the atmosphere on set was “warm and loving,” with the actors forming a family unit on and off-screen in spite of their different styles. “Vanessa Kirby is a total method actor and Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern aren’t, but I tried to pull them towards my way of doing things,” says Zeller, adding that he limited rehearsals to the strict minimum to trigger genuine emotions from actors, who also had access to a therapist during filming, like the rest of the crew, due to the difficulty of some scenes.

To adapt “The Son,” Zeller teamed up with Hampton and transposed the play’s Parisian setting to New York as a way to “detach it” from his personal experience and make it more universal. But he knew that the central story was one that would strike a chord with audiences, because over thousands of performances in different countries, cultures and languages, the plot and emotional beats had been road-tested.

“Teenage depression doesn’t have a social class or nationality,” Zeller says. “When we created the play, I was surprised to see that so many people — parents — came to talk to us afterwards about their experiences.”

With “The Father” and “The Son,” Zeller is on a mission; he wants to “put people in an active seat, to have them project their own life journey, memories, heart, weak spots and mind.” Only then, he believes, will they be able to heal.

Although he hasn’t given up on theater, Zeller, who has relocated with his family in L.A. for a year to accompany the release of “The Son” in the U.S., says is looking to dedicate himself more to his film career.

But don’t expect him to adapt “The Mother” just yet. “My project isn’t simply to adapt only my plays. It’s to tell stories that I hope will be beautiful, powerful and speak about us … I like the idea of exploring something that I don’t know yet.”

The lovely Elsa Keslassy broke the embargo in regards to Florian Zeller’s “The Son.” I’m sure she had the blessings of Sony Pictures Classics, who are handling the film. Regardless, she’s flat-out raving about it.

“The Son” by Florian Zeller (genius and so lovely) is the most impactful film I’ve seen in a long time. As a mother but also as a former tortured teenager. You’ll be floored by Hugh Jackman who’s so sincere and vulnerable in this film that I felt heartbroken hours after it ended.

Keslassy also singles out Dern as the best performance.

Its absence from Telluride and New York was a bit concerning, but Elsa seems to be indicating that this is a keeper. Again, just one person’s opinion, but we’ll take whatever we can get before the fests commence next week.

Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern star in Florian Zeller’s sophomore effort, after his triumphant Oscar-winning “The Father.” Adapted by Zeller from his own acclaimed stage play, “The Son” is being released in October.

Zeller also has a stage play called “The Mother” and has stated that he wants Isabelle Huppert to take on the titular role. Who wants to bet that’ll be his next feature film? A sort of Bergman-esque spiritual trilogy is taking shape here.

She said that of the 2 female roles, it was the role of Dern which could be deemed more award-worthy. It was not an opinion on the entire cast. Having read the play, the 2 roles that stand out are those of Peter and son Nicholas!

I'm glad I could create some conversation that deals with Hugh's acting skills. I think it helps his Oscar campaign for The Son if people are made more aware of the level of acting that Hugh will deliver in the movie.

Since Prisoners seem to be a main favorite as an acting goalpost - this scene gives us a view of the intensity that Hugh's acting can reach.

I was lucky to have seen that on the big screen!

The Australian Embassy here in the Philippines chose it as the lead production in the yearly Australian filmfest they sponsor here. I had seen it before in home video (Region 4) -- but it seemed even more tense in a cinema. That final scene with his brother was Hugh's shining moment!

Florian Zeller has said that he has relocated his family to LA for the year so he can support the presentation of THE SON in film festivals. Venice, Toronto, now Nova Scotia... where else is it expected to be shown and discussed by film buffs??

Not a film fest but known in the tri-state for its interest in film -- the special screening connected with Y2N ( Prof Insdorf) followed by an onnline talk.
