If Hugh had been able to do extensive promo work before the movie opened in Venice/Toronto/USA...and clarifying the cinematic vision and focus of THE SON, perhaps the critics would have been more open-minded about the movie. It seems that many wanted the theme treated in a different way ( almost like a medical procedural or a character study of a victim) but that wasn't what Zeller and his cast were aiming to portray in this tale.

Hugh Jackman: I knew the work of Florian Zeller and I had seen The Father, which blew me away. The quality of the writing of The Son, touched me as an actor but also as a man. I discovered a story at the crossroads of all that I am. The importance of this topic in the news was also important. We are just emerging from the pandemic with all the mental health issues that come with it. However, all this is still taboo. We talk about it with guilt or embarrassment. I am therefore convinced that this film will provoke debates that our time absolutely needs.

Laura Dern: Florian Zeller's work goes even further. It raises the question of generational trauma by explaining the weight of our parents' sins on our souls and shows the daily struggle to be waged not to reproduce the original dysfunctions. We are often ashamed of the way our parents treated us and we strive to act differently with our children, which can generate new traumas... Or fortunately, treat some wounds.

Hugh Jackman, is he the most vulnerable character you've ever had to play?

H. J: Absolutely. Of all the concepts, vulnerability is the one that attracts me the most. Also, when I play Wolverine, I think more about his weaknesses than his superhero powers. For The Son, I had to let my guard down as much as possible. It was exciting, liberating and creepy at the same time.

L.D: David Lynch has this unique ability to break down the boundaries of his visual journey to integrate us into his universe. Florian Zeller goes more through his writing, which explores territories on which no other writer ventures. It takes us into the world of mental illness in a radical way. There is no escape. When we watch his film, we are not just spectators, we are in it.

"I've come to the conclusion that I waste less time attending to everyone who comes to ask me for an autograph than trying to hide me," he says if asked about his penchant for approaching those who call him.

What makes an actor who has been a superhero as well as a great showman approach a role like this?

It's hard to describe the mechanism that brings you to a role. Although sometimes it is very simple. And in this case it was simple. I had been impressed by The Father and one day I received a call from my agent recommending that I take a look at The Son. I read the play and saw it clearly. Although I had never dared to do such a thing, I wrote to Florian (Zeller) and volunteered. I told him that I understood that if I was in conversation with another actor, he wouldn't listen to me. But he took me into account and called me. And that's it.


Before son, as the title says, your character is a father, how would you define the full-time job of being a father in real life?

If I've learned anything all these years (he has two children aged 17 and 22 with Deborra-Lee Furness) it's that being a father is basically about making mistakes. You never know whether or not you're doing the right thing. You try to project what you lived as a child, or what your father taught you, into the education of your children, but you soon discover that times have changed and that what was worth in the past is no longer valid in the present. And then you have to be clear that children are different people from you and that formulas are not valid. To be a father is to always be accompanied by ignorance of things, fear and doubts.


The central theme of the film, around the fear of the speaker, is the mental illness of a son...

Yes and that's why I think it's so important. We live in a society that has become accustomed to treating mental illness with shame, that still associates mental illness with weakness. And I think it's essential to put an end to those ideas that all they do is make us worse. If we don't blame someone for a heart attack, why do we hold them responsible for depression? It is important to be clear that you can suffer, even if you have all the reasons to be happy. I hope that the film will serve to start a conversation, so that people recognize each other in a series of problems that affect us all.
Do you think that the pandemic, in some way, has made us pay more attention to all this than it talks about?
Yes, because what the lockdown revealed is precisely the urgency of the problem. There are many people who live alone with some psychic problem and blame themselves for it. The more all this comes to light, the better, the more people can be helped or cared for.



Are you a different father to your children than your father was to you?

Yes, when I grew up in Australia there was a much stronger sense of patriarchy. You had to be strong and education for a kid like me was basically about toughening up. You couldn't spend much time with your mother, crying in public was frowned upon. All that, thank God, is completely questioned now, but there are still obstacles.


Do you see yourself there? Has that masculinity in which you grew up been questioned?

I always thought, because that's how I was raised, that being vulnerable could be a burden for others, even for my children. But, little by little, I have discovered that if I talk to them about things that frighten or worry me, they feel more secure and relieved. When you share an insecurity, when you ask for help, you do not show yourself weak, but, on the contrary, you show that you are capable of facing your fears.


On the other hand, I don't think I don't miss some of those harsh certainties of the past. There will be something that makes him feel, at least, nostalgia.

Yes, the truth is that in this time where everything has to happen instantly, we have lost the ability and wisdom to wait. In fact, love is a consequence of waiting, of how we manage time. And I do lack that.


If something has been meant is for his ability to dare and succeed in almost everything. He has been a famous superhero, his Oscar nomination came in a musical like Les Miserables... What do you suddenly ask of a new job? How do you see yourself in the future?

I don't know if I'm going to be very original. Probably not. But it attracts me, above all, now that we have talked about doubts and fears, to face characters that, from the outset, I do not know if I will be able to interpret. What I like about this role is that any casting director would have ruled me out. But there comes a time in life when you don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone but you. Right now what least influences my career are issues such as planning or strategy. I let myself go. It's all very impulsive. I avoid control or security.
