In 2003, the 51-year-old actress met Florian Zeller, who came to interview her. More than just a journalist, the writer appeared as a true savior. "He took my son (Gabriel) and me head on," she recalls. This 'young man' almost saved us, he's the noblest soul I've ever met."

Once the beautiful Toulouse woman was brought back to life, the chemistry with her brave knight took precedence over her fears. Together, they were able to overcome the difficulties and become the proud parents of Roman, now 13 years old. And twenty years of love later, harmony is still at the rendezvous between Florian Zeller and Marine Delterme. "I think it's based on the magic of meeting at the right time, knowing how to listen to each other, support each other, accept the moments when the other is more fragile, and help him get up," she said two years ago. We are no longer the same and it's magical to still be together, to make this journey together," she rejoiced.

From the kind of admiration that Florian Zeller has drawn from Hugh Jackman, the Frenchman must be such a very good human being and friend! Apart from being a very creative writer and filmmaker!

Hope they get to do another film together.

The Son was filmed in London...during the pandemic...and segued to NYC for some scenes.


Hugh will be back in London sometime in May ... to film the movie of Wolverine vs Deadpool

If you look at the various Instagram posts - serious ones - it seems that the British producers did a lot more in publicizing the film and the effort to reach out to people with mental health issues.

A lot of publicity shots and notices that would have helped clarify what messages Zeller and his cast were putting out in THE SON!

Too bad there was no equivalent USA producer that could have helped clarify the cinematic focus of the movie...and did some extra work for the Venice and especially the Toronto film fests.

For a movie that did not do too well at the box office -- this movie is getting good exposure through streaming right away.

As of May 20, 2023, The Son is now available to stream on Netflix. This is thanks to a deal that was struck between Netflix and Sony Pictures that allowed the former to stream the latter studios' recent releases after their theatrical and PVOD runs had ended. The Son will be joining recent Sony titles such as A Man Called Otto, Missing, and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody on the service.

In France, where The Son showed the highest box office receipts -- it is available on DVD (R-2) and Blu-Ray, with French subtitles.

In the UK - it is available only on Prime Video.


Depending on DVD/BluRay players, the USA English version should be available to other countries which are English-speaking. The theme is a major universal concern and Sony should have invested in proliferating the film to other countries, with selected subtitles, if only to serve a certain advocacy.

The Son, released in 2022, has created some speculation about the origins of the film's story and whether it is based on a true story. Written and directed by Florian Zeller, The Son received mixed reviews from critics, but has landed itself a spot in Netflix's top 10 movies in the United States since it was placed on the streaming giant's platform. This heartbreaking story stars Hugh Jackman and Zen McGrath as father and son.

The story told in The Son is a difficult one to watch, but it provides some stark warnings and brutal lessons about depression and parenting. Hugh Jackman plays Peter Miller, a recently remarried man with a newborn son as well as a teenage son from his previous marriage. The story follows Peter's attempt to reconcile his relationship with his elder son, Nicholas (McGrath), who is struggling with severe depression. The Son is not based on a true story, but rather a French play of the same name, also written by Florian Zeller. The play is from 2018, and while the story in The Son is not identical to that of the original play, it is largely the same. Zeller seemingly decided that a few changes to the script would make a better fit for the big screen, accounting for any differences between The Son and the original play. Regardless, the story is not based on real life, even if it feels like a true story.

The play version of The Son, originally titled in French (Le Fils), is the final play in a trilogy that began with The Father and The Mother. The Father, Le Père in French, premiered in 2012, while The Mother (La Mère) premiered two years earlier in 2010. The trilogy is highly acclaimed, and The Father has now been performed in over 45 countries.


The Son Feels Realistic (Despite Being Fictional)

While The Son may not be based on real life, it certainly feels like a true story. Struggles with family and depression are far too common, and the story feels extremely real because of the relatability. Not only are the themes in The Son relatable, it is also shot in such a way that it feels like looking in on someone's real life. Between the script, the directing, and the acting The Son is made to feel like a real-life recording of a family's heartbreaking story.

‘The Father’ Director Florian Zeller Receives France’s Legion of Honor

Florian Zeller, the Oscar-winning director and playwright of “The Father” and “The Son,” received the Medal of Honor, France’s highest decoration, at an intimate ceremony in Paris on Wednesday.

The event, hosted in the gardens of the French authors and composers guild (SACD), gathered a flurry of talent and luminaries from the worlds of film, TV, theater and literature — reflecting the breadth of Zeller’s body of work. Zeller was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor by France President Emmanuel Macron.

Guests included Isabelle Huppert, Pierre Arditi, Catherine Frot and Elodie Navarre who have starred in Zeller’s plays; Christopher Hampton, with whom he shares a best adapted screenplay Oscar for “The Father;” “Simone” actor Elsa Zylberstein; Mediawan boss Pierre-Antoine Capton, with whom he launched the L.A.-based company Blue Morning Pictures; Victoria Bedos (“La famille Belier”); Orange Studio’s Kristina Zimmermann and Sebastien Cauchon, who distributed both “The Father” and “The Son” in France; French singer Julien Clerc; French director Anne Fontaine and producer Philippe Carcassonne; as well as Zeller’s wife, Marine Delterme, an actor who was recently signed by WME.


Zeller was introduced on stage by Arditi, who starred in some of Zeller’s most popular plays, including “The Truth.”

“My path is an addition of successive passions,” said Zeller, whose plays have been staged in 45 countries, more than any other playwright.

“When I begun to write novels, I didn’t imagine for a second that one day, theater would take up so much room, and when I started writing plays I didn’t anticipate that cinema would fill my heart so much, and now I dedicate my time to it, while taking pleasure in imagining that perhaps in 10 years I will be doing something else,” continued Zeller, who was elegantly dressed in a navy suit by Emmanuel Zegna.

Zeller also paid tribute to his father who gave him “the taste of elsewhere, of America,” and his mother, a “marvelous editor” who “inspired” him. “She illuminated my childhood and adolescence with her talent for recounting stories and tales. Many times I have done things while hoping it would make her proud,” said Zeller, who also thanked his wife Marine for embarking with him on a new life in L.A. with their two sons.

Zeller, whose latest film “The Son” starring Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern premiered at Venice, will next serve on the international jury of the Jerusalem Film Festival alongside Claire Denis, Whit Stillman, Joana Vincent and Maria Schrader. Zeller earned a whooping six Oscar nominations with his directorial feature debut “The Father,” earning Anthony Hopkins a best actor award.


Illustrious recipients of France’s legion of honor includes Robert Redford, Miles Davis, David Lynch, Charlie Chaplin, Toni Morrison and Josephine Baker.

Zeller lives in Paris. In 2010, he married ex-model, actress and sculptor Marine Delterme, who played one of the main roles in the Parisian production of his play Le Manège. Their son, Roman, was born in December 2008. His older son, Gabriel, was born when Zeller was nineteen.(1998)

Florian Zeller has moved to LA with his wife, presumably to work on more filmmaking projects. Presumably their young son Roman is also joining them. His wife's son (Gabriel) by an earlier relationship with another French film personality is grown up and likely already on his own. Florian dedicated THE SON to Gabriel presumably because the young teenager then suffered from depression ( but recovered). His mother was in a supposed very abusive relationship with Gabriel's father ( also a famous French entertainment personality). It was Florian's marrying his wife ( who was never married to Gabriel's father) and coming to the family which supposedly restored family happiness ( see my earlier posts on the matter).

It is interesting that they have now released a complete set of home video (bluray/dvd/streaming) of THE SON in French. Presumably because the box office results in his native homeland were very strong.

I have also read that the version streamed in Spain, had dubbing in the Spanish language.

It seems that extra effort to reach people have been made despite the poor showing at the beginning in the USA/UK? Maybe people realized that the messages of this film were too important to be ignored.

You can feel it in some of the latter reviews.

Many ratings include the must-see-message to parents and grandparents. The focus is appropriate because the movie was never meant to highlight only on Nicholas but the family involved in appreciating this drama.

In the UK, no home video but availability on streaming.
