Early Oscar predictions: Will Hugh Jackman complete his EGOT with ‘The Son’?

Hugh Jackman needs one more trophy to complete his EGOT grand slam of show business awards: an Oscar. Can he wrap that up in the coming year with his performance in Florian Zeller‘s upcoming “The Son”? Around 2,000 Gold Derby users are already predicting the 2023 awards, and even sight unseen the early consensus is that Jackman will take Best Actor. Do you think our readers’ initial instincts are spot-on or way off?

The first award Jackman crossed off his list was the Tony. After breaking through in the US as tough guy Wolverine in the “X-Men” movies, he showed that he was also a consummate song-and-dance man by playing Australian songwriter Peter Allen in “The Boy from Oz,” which won him Best Actor in a Musical in 2004. He actually hosted the Tony Awards ceremony on the night he won that award, and he won Best Variety Performance at the Emmys for that gig the following year. It took longer for him to receive his Grammy, but it finally came in 2019 when he claimed Best Compilation Soundtrack as a performer on the recording for “The Greatest Showman.”




Oscar is all that’s left. He got his foot in the door with yet another musical performance; he was nominated for Best Actor for the 2012 big-screen adaptation of “Les Miserables.” That’s his only nomination to date, but we know he’s on the academy’s radar. And “The Son” pairs him with filmmaker Florian Zeller, whose last film, “The Father,” won Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins just over a year ago. Like “The Father,” “The Son” is based on a play by Zeller, which he adapted for the screen with Christopher Hampton.

So the pedigree is there for the film. And the timing is there too: Jackman has built up enough respect and goodwill in Hollywood over the last two decades that he may be considered due for a coronation. All he needs is the one right role to get him there. And this could be it: as of this writing he’s predicted to win by majorities of our Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s nominations, and the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores predicting the Oscar nominations over multiple years. Time will tell if lightning strikes twice for Zeller and if that means Jackman will be the next to wrap up his EGOT.

Hugh Jackman’s range spans both film and stage! He has shown very strong acting skills and screen/stage presence in many genres ( action/drama/musicals/dark comedy/rom-com/sci-fi). His lone Oscar nomination in Les Miserables was testimony to his many talents in a very challenging material with a strong dramatic arc and which required exceptional acting and singing skills to deliver. On stage, Hugh has handled both musical & dramatic theatre with finesse, in addition to being the top box office draw. He has even performed in a 90-show music tour ( across the USA/Europe/AU/NZ/Can/Mex) with a theatrical theme and other music favorites. He has hosted the 2009 Oscars, now considered as one of the best Oscars ever produced…and lent his hosting skills on at least 4 occasions for the Tonys! Surely, the display of such talent must be recognized and his next film THE SON seems like an excellent vehicle to validate the strength of his acting skills in this powerful family drama! Hope the Tony nominators & voters come to recognize that Hugh Jackman is deserving of a full-fledged Oscar and EGOT status!

How to Win an Acting Oscar: The Overdue Advantage

From Hugh Jackman to Michelle Williams, having a history in the awards zone makes it easier to get back in.

For an actor to win an Oscar after being long overdue, two things need to be true. First: Do they have years of stellar output without an Oscar nomination, or repeated nominations with no wins? See: Glenn Close (8 Oscar nominations), Amy Adams (six), and Bradley Cooper (four). Enter the awards zone once and it’s easier to get back in.

Second: Do they have the right role in the right year? Without that quality and timing, justice can’t be served. (See: Renee Zellweger winning on her fourth go-round in “Judy” or Paul Newman winning for “The Color of Money” after seven nods.)

Finally: Short of an Oscar itself, the best thing that can happen for a long-overdue actor is a SAG nomination. (The SAG nomination committee is voting now, with nominations announced January 11, 2023.)

Among the awards contenders this year who cannot claim the overdue advantage are Oscar-winners Cate Blanchett (“TAR”), Olivia Colman (“Empire of Light”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Causeway”), Will Smith (“Emancipation”), and Emma Thompson (“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”). Not that winning before stops you from winning again, as Frances McDormand can attest (“Fargo,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “Nomadland”).


Among the potential nominees who have accumulated points for never winning are four-time nominee Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”), three-timer Tom Cruise (“Top Gun: Maverick”), two-timers Mara Rooney (“Women Talking”) and Carey Mulligan (“She Said”), and solo nominees Jessie Buckley (“Women Talking”), Hugh Jackman (“The Son”), and Judd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”). They all benefit from already being in the club — and from having waited in vain for their name to be called.

As for who holds the greatest overdue advantage, we’ve got several contenders.

Brendan Fraser has been a Hollywood fixture for decades, working steadily since his heady days as the star of “George of the Jungle” and the “Mummy” franchise. He makes his comeback in Darren Aronofsky’s festival hit “The Whale” as Charlie, a sad-eyed obese shut-in seeking redemption from his daughter (Sadie Sink) before he eats himself to death. A long career, a comeback narrative, and a prosthetic-heavy transformation: That’s an acting branch favorite. (See: Charlize Theron in “Bombshell,” Gary Oldman in “Darkest Hour”).

Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Qwan, stars of the outrageous action-family comedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” are frontrunners in their respective categories, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. They juggled comedy, drama, pratfalls, and stunts with rare aplomb, and both have long paid their dues. Both Yeoh and Qwan picked up Gotham and Indie Spirit nominations; Qwan won the Gotham for Best Supporting Performance, as well as the NYFCC award, while Yeoh won the National Board of Review’s Best Actress prize.

It’s shocking to realize that current Time covergirl Yeoh was never Oscar-nominated for Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” back in 2001 (she was nominated for a BAFTA along with costar Zhang Ziyi), or for her powerful mother in “Crazy Rich Asians.” She’s carried action pictures in Hong Kong and Hollywood for decades, but that genre rarely appears in awards shows.

Qwan was a child actor who starred in “The Goonies” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” but moved behind the scenes when acting work grew scarce as an adult. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” marks an extraordinary comeback. Public appearances with Harrison Ford, among others who remember him from years ago, boost his cause.

Popular and never-nominated veteran Jamie Lee Curtis is another potential Supporting player who used the promo trail for “Halloween Ends” to good effect for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Some Academy members may think she was once nominated for “A Fish Called Wanda” or “Trading Places,” but it was the BAFTAs that nominated her for both. (She won for “Trading Places.”) And SAG nominated her for James Cameron’s “True Lie

Another actor known for comedy who’s seeking awards love is Adam Sandler, who gives another strong performance after 2019’s “Uncut Gems” with Netflix sports drama “Hustle.” He hasn’t landed any critics’ group love so far, but he did give a winning speech at his Gothams tribute.

Gaining momentum is Colin Farrell for Martin McDonagh’s black Irish comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin,” along with his Supporting costar Brendan Gleeson. Neither has been nominated despite years of glowing reviews for films like McDonagh’s “In Bruges,” among others. Farrell added a win from both the New York Films Critics Circle (shared with his performance in “After Yang”) and the National Board of Review to follow his Venice Best Actor award, while Gleeson just picked up NBR Supporting Actor.

Academy voters are notoriously Anglophilic and often fall for a plummy British accent when given the chance. This year’s Brit thespian, renowned for his work on the stage (“Skylight”) as well as the screen (“Love, Actually”) is Bill Nighy. The never-nominated veteran gives a heartbreaking performance in screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro’s adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1953 classic “Ikiru,” as a paper-pushing executive who gets a bleak terminal diagnosis that changes his outlook on life. This actor has earned his respect.

Golden Globes Return To NBC Still Tainted By Tinseltown’s Distrust Of HFPA

With the Golden Globes nominations set for Monday, Hollywood has a big decision to make when it comes to the beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association: Is it time to forgive the organization for its corrupt past, lack of diversity and paid members just so everyone can booze it up again at the Beverly Hilton?


As far as the current regime of the HFPA is concerned, everyone in town seems ready to party again. “The feedback has been amazing,” President Helen Hoehne tells Deadline. “Our studio partners have worked with us to ensure the kinds of changes were made to reimagine the HFPA and Golden Globes and preserve our future to ensure our philanthropy and charitable activities continue to grow strongly, and we remain the leading awards program to kick off the award season on a strong note that benefits the entire Hollywood community. We recognize we have a special responsibility to set the tone and tenor for each season and look forward to embracing that challenge with Hollywood’s party of the year.”

And she continues to stress that the HFPA has cleaned up its house. It boosted the racial and ethnic diversity of their membership to over 51% by adding 21 U.S.-based journalists who work for overseas outlets and more than 100 new international voters. “The depth, diversity and size of the voting body now is historic and includes voters from 62 countries,” she said. “It is also a majority of women and those who self-identify as minorities and LGBTQIA+.”

The HFPA also killed the practice of accepting gifts and started a hotline for folks to report malfeasance “which have already resulted in the expulsion of certain members,” said Hoehne. Some members still earn salaries, though Hoehne describes them as “small” stipends for people who also work on HFPA committees.

“They’re journalists and they’re making their income as journalists,” she continued. “Before, most foreign correspondents working in the U.S. were employed on retainers and operated bureaus here. But it all fell apart with the closure of outlets and mass layoffs. Most of those bureaus were lost and replaced with freelance work. So, finding alternative means to support journalists with other work was what we did. However, this is only a supplement to their journalistic income and by no means a full-time salary.”



Whether those changes are enough remains the million-dollar question. We already know it’s not for Brendan Fraser, who made it clear he won’t attend the kudofest after the 2003 groping incident by the ex-HFPA chief. Fraser stands to earn plenty of attention for his work on The Whale, but he won’t go looking for it at the Beverly Hilton.

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” he told GQ last month. “No, I will not participate. … It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite.”

One source at a Big Three agency tells Deadline that it feels like everyone is in a “wait-and-see scenario”: When agents were asked at a recent staff meeting what kind of response they anticipated from nominees on Golden Globes morning, they shared the consensus that it was “too early to tell.”

“After nominations is when you’re going to really see who’s going to campaign” the source recalled from the conversation. “It’s going to be interesting because on one end, you can use that obviously to drive forward your Oscars push. But at what price? I think you’re going to see that with some of the talent …people are going to hold back and see who sticks their neck out first, or if they do, and sort of go with the crowd that way.”



The core sentiment expressed by this source is a pervasive one; while the HFPA’s efforts to reform in the wake of recent controversies are appreciated, the level of transformation accomplished to date within the Globes org is “just not enough.”

“It’s complicated, isn’t it?” a top publicist relayed to Deadline about whether they would advise their A-list clients to participate and even attend the Globes next month. “I don’t trust them, despite all the changes they’ve made. Many of the same old members who were the problem are still there. But it is a competitive season and everyone’s looking for an edge, and winning a Golden Globe used to kind of provide that going into the Oscars. So I’m looking at it on a case-by-case basis, consulting with clients on what they want to do.”

Added a prominent producer: “Too many members are still paid salaries by the HFPA — that tells me all I need to know about how much they’ve changed. Still self-serving, still protecting their own beyond reason. This isn’t change, it’s not even window dressing. It’s manipulation.”

Not everyone in town shares the same ambivalence. A few appreciate the constant stream of emails from Hoehne, who has vowed to diligently keep “representatives informed of our changes and reforms at every step and continue in our transparency and openness.”

“I’ve been on all the emails with Helen Hoehne, and I think they’ve made a real effort to reboot their organization,” revealed one longtime publicist. “I think they deserve a chance to come back. I really do. They’re more inclusive. They’re not gonna be exclusionary. They have a long history, and it’s been checkered. I just think about what a joke they were, and how they’ve wielded too much power for too long. But it’s nice to see that they’ve been forced to have a real reckoning. Based on all the correspondence I’ve been reading, I think that they have accomplished that.”

A veteran manager thinks too many people take the Golden Globes exposure for granted.

“I didn’t even know what The Handmaid’s Tale was until I saw it on the Golden Globes,” said the manager, who has at least one client who’s all but assured a nomination Monday. “I had never heard of Killing Eve until I heard about it on the show. It turns people on to our industry. People all over the world watch this. It also employs a lot of people. I’m not talking about the movie stars. I’m not worried about about film executives. I’m talking about the people who lay down the red carpet, the dry cleaners, the seamstresses, the makeup artists. I don’t think that’s a bad thing for our town.”

After a year’s hiatus, NBC will air the Golden Globes ceremony live on January 10. Jerrod Carmichael will host.

Ironically, the Golden Globes has historically been a forerunner of how the OSCARS can turn out to be.

To me, their saving grace in recent years is their recognition as nominees of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN for Best Picture and HUGH JACKMAN for Best Actor-Comedy/Musical when the Oscars completely ignored the movie ( because FOX chose not to submit it for consideration of the AMPAS - they did submit LOGAN). They could have been recognized for their prescience had they gave the award to the movie and to Jackman ( who lost to James Franco - where is he now?).
