Best surprise for me -- I totally did not expect the curtain call tap number music... so I was laughing when I heard the first strains of that dance music Jo

Comparisons will happen, as Harold Hill is a special kind of role. A charismatic conman! Good and bad at the same time Btw, someone on BWW said Hugh Jackman is always a showman. I guess his Harold Hill then is a charismatic showman-conman! Preston was not a showman, just a glib conman. Hugh Jackman also has the advantage of looks! No other Hill can compare - this coming from an uber-fan Jo

On this iTunes List, The Music Man ramks # 3 among iTunes downloads. snkhan.co.uk/stuff/iTunes.php?chart=USalbumsPlease the wide disparity in pricing -- so the sales for The Music Man, price-wise outranks other new sales by a factor of about 2.5/3:1

On BWW -- sampling of reactions ( actually more favorable than expected from the somewhat negative attitude towards the show on this board). Earlier reactions not included here.

The first time I listened to the album, I was too excited and a little anxious.
I listened to it a few more times.
Today, I paid full attention to it!
Now I fully realize and believe that this is THE definitive recording of this stage show, at least of this revival with its welcome and more attuned-to-present-times staging! A memorable ... and dependable... companion piece to the show on Broadway!
I say it is the definitive recording ... because it allows you to imagine or re-imagine a staging of the show. It does this with its excellent characterizations, its orchestral passages, and the overall scintillating mood of the recording!
It gives an excellent imagined picture of this Harold Hill -- not a truly horrible bad man con man - just someone out to make a quick buck by seducing the town with his natural charisma...but who himself fell to the charm of this town, not just to his idea of a romantic partner. In the same token, we also see the character changes in a spirited lady who did not know that a man could steal her heart at all... and most importantly to feel a town find it sense of community once again! Even the story of little Winthrop is well-documented here.
It also gives an excellent picture of how a romance developed between two unlikely characters, so opposed to each one but physically and romantically attracted to each other. Although I must confess, I wish the recording could have fully captured that romantic denouement scene of Harold and Miriam coming together romantically speaking. What a kiss (on stage)!
Other characters came to life through their songs. The blustery Mayor Shinn, the social pinings of his wife Eulalie, the anxious hopes of Mrs Paroo, the boy who also changed due to Harold Hill's touch, the supportive Marcellus who shone in Shipoopi, the townsfolk interesting other chraracters ( the quartet, the pick-a-little ladies, the jubilant and energetic kids and young adults).
Of course the recording could not capture the dance sequences that gave this production the utterly joyful feeling that previous stagings ( including film) failed to give.
And that book-throwing choreography plus the dance motions in Marian The Librarian was missed in the recording.
We also miss the midwest settings that was an excellent counterpoint to the the energy on stage.
My only missed moment: " I think I will give Iowa a try!"
Some folks want a singing Olympics. Not me -- all I want is a full and exciting remembrance of the show I have seen and will see again!
Hugh Jackman - you're my musical hero! Curly, Valjean, PTBarnum, Peter Allen... now Harold Hill! You give them life!

Some lessons to be shared :
*Don't follow the advice of an Amazon Chat advisor to buy the mp3 via an Amazon Gift Certificate. You'll get stuck with the GC ( although it can be used when they release the CD). Cards outside the USA cannot be used to buy mp3 music -- something to do with the agreement with content provider ( this is universal practice, it seems). You cannot ask someone from the USA to buy it for you and then have the music transferred to you. Transfer not allowed ( presumably for digital subjects transactions).
*Don't get a trial subscription with Apple Music...and after listening to the album decide to get the digital album. I ended up not being able to play the purchased album. Apple advisor could not help me. On my own, I cancelled my Apple Music subscription... and now it plays on iPad and iPhone.

The producers should have worked out with album producers and release outfits to do a simultaneous release of digital and physical (via CD/Vinyl) albums! They underestimated the appeal of the album. It continues to rank high on the BestSeller list of albums on Amazon. Presumably the CD-loving fans are all waiting to get the physical media. That is also what can be given as gifts, as digital transfers are not allowed.
In case the recipient does not have a CD player...there is a circuitous way to give a digital version but it will involve disclosing the cost of the gift ( by giving the person the currency involved or buying a Gift Certificate on Amazon but informing that it cannot be used directly to get the album). Arghh...

If you're thinking of giving the CD-audio as a Christmas gift and you need to order more than 4 -- there is a current maximum limit of 4 orders at Amazon.
This seems to be a new policy at Amazon and applies to other CD purchases.
In case anyone is interested.
