As long as there have been X-Men movies, Wolverine has generally been front and centre. While the adamantium-clawed mutant isn’t the team’s leader – nor usually central in the comics or cartoons – Hugh Jackman’s incarnation of Logan became the focal point of the original X-Men trilogy, as well as several Wolverine spin-off films (including deeply emotional send-off Logan), and timeline-hopping crossovers like Days Of Future Past. But even amid all those outings, there’s still fresh ground to be covered in Jackman’s long-awaited return to the role. Yes, he’s donning the claws again – years after thinking he was done for good – in Deadpool & Wolverine, teaming up with Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With A Mouth for a Marvel movie like no other.

And, as he tells Empire, it brought plenty of fresh opportunities with it – including getting to wear the character’s iconic yellow get-up in the flesh for the first time. “We almost did it in The Wolverine,” Jackman says. “But from the moment I put it on here, I was like, ‘How did we never do this?’ It looked so right, it felt so right. I was like, ‘That’s him.’ There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me.” Plus, in his new buddy team-up, Wolverine has plenty to offer the notorious Mr. Pool too. “It’s great for Deadpool to have someone who will punch him in the face,” Jackman laughs.

Of anyone, it was Kevin Feige who was most nervous about Jackman’s return to the role, having previously warned the actor not to renege on the gut-wrenching finale of Logan. “I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back’,” Feige recalls. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.’” But it seems this won’t be the exact same Logan we’ve met in previous X-Men movies (“Correct,” says Feige), and after a long drive, Jackman decided that another take on the character was exactly what he hankered for. “I was about an hour into the drive,” he remembers. “And that question came into my head: ‘What do I want to do?’ And as soon as I asked the question, I wanted to do Deadpool & Wolverine. I just knew it. I drove for another hour. Couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I got out of the car, called Ryan, and said, ‘Ryan, if you’ll have me, I’m in.’” Get ready to go berserker.

Very astute!
If the 1st XMen movie(where they both worked together) had not succeeded - & that happened because audiences loved the characterization of Wolverine , via HughJackman. The first movies, led by Hugh jackman, rejuvenated the genre & led to its unprecedented popularity.

He is also not familiar with Hugh's way of choosing roles - that is, to take the road not taken!
HJ probably wanted to explore what a comedic slant on the character -maybe a variant - could work out. We'll see how it goes when the film is released.

Hugh Jackman went for a long drive after being approached to return as Wolverine in 'DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE', pondering whether he should take on the role again.

"And as soon as I asked the question, I wanted to do Deadpool & Wolverine. I just knew it. I drove for another hour. Couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I got out of the car, called Ryan [Reynolds], and said, ‘Ryan, if you’ll have me, I’m in."

What is good about this -- personal friendships are rare among top stars of a film...but in this case, it went further back -- so we are likely seeing the results of a long period of camaraderie & friendship. The first person whom we saw walking with Hugh after his marital split was Ryan!

Kevin Feige Originally Told Hugh Jackman ‘Don’t Come Back’ as Wolverine, Rejected Ryan Reynolds’ First ‘Deadpool 3’ Pitch for ‘Rashomon’-Style Film

“Deadpool and Wolverine” is poised to be one of the biggest movies of the year thanks to the pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who is returning to his iconic X-Men role for the first time in seven years. Jackman’s return is skyrocketing buzz around the comic book film, which is much needed for Marvel Studios after a rocky 2023 that saw movies such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” flop at the box office. It might come as a surprise, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed to Empire that he originally warned Jackman against playing Wolverine again.

“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back,’” Feige said. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.’”



What ultimately got Feige on board with the idea of Jackman coming back was that he would not be playing the version of Logan/Wolverine that audiences grew to love in the various X-Men movies. That was also of interest to Jackman himself. His original iteration of Wolverine died in “Logan,” and he did not want to screw with that film either.

“It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines,” Jackman previously told SiriusXM about returning. “Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”

Jackman added in a new interview with Empire that “Deadpool and Wolverine” will show “different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies.”

Feige not only warned Jackman at first not to return as Wolverine, but he also told Empire that he rejected Ryan Reynolds’ original pitch for a third “Deadpool” movie as the two were figuring out the best way to introduce the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of Fox.

Reynolds revealed that he first envisioned “Deadpool 3” as a “’Rashomon’ story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something that they got into together, but told from three completely different perspectives. It was a way to make a large-scale movie in a very small way.”

Feige turned down the pitch, although he added: “The truth is, I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet. I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits. But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have pitched that to me, but he also pitched 25 other thoughts and ideas.”

Reynolds “went back to the drawing board, and I wrote up about 18 different treatments. Some of them almost like a Sundance film, a budget of under $10 million, sort of using the IP in a way that they previously hadn’t used, and I pitched bigger movies, and I pitched things in-between.”

Whatever it is Reynolds and Feige agreed on, audiences will finally be able to check it out when “Deadpool and Wolverine” hits theaters on July 26 from Disney.

No need to wait...

The fact that Kevin Feige designated the movie was the sole Marvel release in 2024 is already testament that Feige changed his mind about the film project. Also, those early survey results indicating fans's preference for Hugh Jackman as top supehero they want to see back on the screen must also have had an impact on Feige's hesitance to see HJ back as Wolverine.

Some have wondered if maybe the reason why Feige was hesitant of HJ's Wolverine return... was that he had his own plans on recasting Wolverine... and he knows very well, that whoever plays a recast Wolverine will likely not compare very well with Hugh Jackman!
