I know the item purchased was probably perfect and surely something Oscar would want to have. However, knowing young teenage boys, the 'buying a toy for his son' line in the article will be cringe worthy & may likely generate typical teasing from other teens he knows.
This was not a knock on Hugh but on the writer of the article.

The street paps dress like anyone on the street. The distinction is the expensive camera equipment they haul around. These are not passersby with iPhones.

Could be - except for that guy in shorts ... Hugh says that he is really pretty used to cameras clicking, whether expensive cameras from pros or tourists ( remember when he was crossing Columbus Circle from the Mandarin to maybe Trump International when he did that interview with the Australian lady TV host not so long ago -- the tourists's cameras/phones were clicking away ).

Hugh Jackman is a man who needs no introduction. A movie star and household name, the 44-year-old Australian has earned worldwide fame and renown for a glittering acting career that has included starring roles in several Hollywood blockbusters.

Accolades and honours have rarely been in short supply, and the latest arrived only last week, when Jackman picked up the Golden Icon award at the Zurich film festival. Indeed, it was while in Switzerland for this event that the X-Men, Les Miserables and Wolverine leading man indulged his other major passion in an exclusive interview with FIFA.com.

Jackman explained, in fact, that it was dreams of excelling on the pitch, rather than on stage or on the silver screen, that had captivated him as a youngster. In an animated chat, this patriotic Sydney native also looked forward to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ and another appearance in the game’s greatest tournament for his beloved Socceroos.

FIFA.com: So, Australia are in the World Cup for a fourth time...
Hugh Jackman: This is not something I was used to. I mean, we grew up watching the World Cup but we always just assumed that Australia would never make it. Over the last few years, the Socceroos have just been incredible and I think it’s great because young people are growing up thinking [qualifying for World Cups] is normal. Success begets success in that respect.

So we can assume you’ll be watching the World Cup in Brazil then?
Oh yeah. To be clear, I’m hoping to be in Brazil for it. I’m one of these people that, when you’re offered things because you’re famous, I’ll say, ‘No, I don’t want that. I’m not interested in that’. But tickets? Yes! Absolutely! Restaurants and tickets for football games, that’s me. I’ll be a wh*** for that, trust me! (laughs)

All my dreams were not about becoming an actor, but about being able to play for my country in my sport or any sport.


Is football particularly close to your heart?
I love the World Cup. To me, the Olympics and the World Cup are the purest international competitions out there. I played soccer until I was ten and then I moved on to rugby, but there is something I still find so beautiful about the game. My son is playing the game at the moment and I’m the assistant coach – well, really more the assistant to the assistant – in his soccer team. And, to me, anything that takes place once every four years and that cauldron of pressure that exists with [the World Cup], that’s what inspires me and turns me on.

So let’s say Australia go pretty far but then go out of the tournament. Who would be the next team you would support?
Brazil. I’ve always loved Brazil, although I’m not sure every year I would have supported them. But I can only imagine to a certain degree the pressure that is on the players in that country. I know that sport is like a religion in Australia, but nothing like soccer in Brazil. So for those players to win that World Cup at home, it would make that country so proud. It would change lives. Plus, they have similar colours to my country, so it’s easy to support them!

If you had to choose between Australia winning the World Cup and you winning an Oscar, what would you pick?
Wow. These are good, hard questions! Can I make it easier and say I’m playing for Australia? (laughs) I just want both! No, I expect nothing and everything’s a bonus. It’s easy for me, at my age and having grown up a soccer supporter in Australia, not to expect us to win the World Cup. I think it’s good to be the underdog in every situation.

Wolverine has been one of your most famous roles. Do you think he would have made a good goalie?
No, he’d keep on popping and slashing the ball. Plus, in the comic book, he’s only 5ft 3ins and there aren’t many 5ft 3ins keepers out there. I wouldn’t mind him in the midfield though. He could do some serious damage in there. Messi would be thinking, ‘I might just pass it to someone else. I don’t fancy going up against him.’

And if you had to play for one of the teams at the World Cup, who would it be?
Australia, of course! I’m an Aussie, I grew up playing cricket and rugby, and one of the greatest thrills - and most frightening things - I’ve ever done was to sing the national anthem before a New Zealand-Australia rugby match. I remember standing next to the team and just being there, so close, was a thrill for me. I grew up a real sports nut. All my dreams were not about becoming an actor, but about being able to play for my country in my sport or any sport. The truth is I just wasn’t that good.

The first time I heard the cheer : "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - oi, oi, oi!" was many years ago, somewhere in Munich, Germany where we were brought to a local beerhouse ( this was the early part of Oktoberfest) and those cheers would erupt between singing, toasting and drinking of huge mugs of beers ( just as you see it held by German waitresses in tourism ads!). There must have been a huge number of Aussies <aussie> <aussie> <aussie> in that happy group! Me, I chickened out and opted for a coke ( lame! )

Hmm...I wonder what Hugh will be doing at that time?

Btw, so far there have been 4.5 million ticket requests for a smaller number of available seats ( 3.3 million) at the World Cup ( held at different stadiums and places in Brazil).

One of my favorite films is a World War 2 movie about an international soccer team from the Allied forces playing against Germany - It is called VICTORY, is directed by John Huston, and stars Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Max von Sydow, among others and a lot of soccer stars including the Brazilian great, Pele, who called the sport " the beautiful game", if I am not mistaken. I always watch it if it comes on cable TV once in a while - it is part comedy and part a tribute to the game and to sportsmanship ( the German general who arranged the match because of his love for the game secretly admired the Allies Team).

Thanks to a very generous scholarship from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption, we’re excited to attend the Congressional Coalition on Adoption’s events in Washington, D.C. in just two weeks. We’re bringing both Joseph and Asher (AND my amazing mom will be coming to help wrangle them!). I’m so humbled that we get to experience this as a family. (PRAYYYY that our boys do well on the plane, and that other flyers have heaping loads of patience for the crazy that we’ll likely bring to our flights!)

We’re looking forward to the opportunity to connect with and learn from leaders across the country who are committed to investing in the lives of children here and abroad. We’ll tour the U.S. Captiol, attend a Angels in Adoption congressional pin ceremony, be part of a ”Making the Most of Your Voice” legislative seminar, visit with members of congress, and attend the Angels in Adoption Reception and Gala, which boasts more Congressional participation than any chid welfare event in the nation.


This year’s National Angels in Adoption awardees are Deborra-Lee Furness Jackman and Willie + Korie Robertson of Duck Dynasty. (My dad is super excited about me sending him a picture of THE BEARDS.) The gala will also feature former awardees, Sean + Leigh Anne Tuohy, whose story inspired the The Blind Side.

I’m especially looking forward to hear Deborra-Lee Furness Jackman speak. She is an Australian director, producer and child advocate. She’s a World Vision Ambassador, founder of National Adoption Awareness Week and the executive director for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation in Australia. She’s a mom to two adopted kids. And, bonus: She’s married to Hugh Jackman (!!!).

Deborra wrote a piece for CNN last week about fighting the global orphan crisis. Her op-ed is so on point and very much worth reading. Really, please read it. This is just one excerpt I shouted Amen! to:


"I am not a learned scholar or professional worker in international adoption. I am not even an adoption advocate — I am a child advocate. I am an individual who has witnessed what life is like for children who don’t have anyone to watch their back, or teach them right from wrong, to care about what they think or feel, or the basic human need to feel loved, to feel safe and secure and to feel that they actually matter. I believe everyone deserves be the object of someone’s affection."

"My dream would be that there would be no need for adoption and that every child could remain with birth families. When adoption is the best option for these kids, I totally advocate for a well-run system that serves these children and families

Yeah, those look more like a man's shoe, but they're cool. I think Paul McCartney had a similar pair in the '60's!
I like Hugh clean shaven--the scruff is sexy, but I don't like that he never shaves his neck!
