Here in the tropics ( where the average temperature during mid-day would likely be in the low..and sometimes mid-thirties), the sun is more intense and since we are much closer to the equator presumably we get more irradiated by the sun. Medical knowledge aside ( it seems fair- haired/skin and/or light-color eyed Caucasians are more vulnerable), there are many practices that have been used through the ages to shield us from the sun -- *I have often wondered why umbrellas are used only for the rain ( and sometimes for snowflakes) in most countries. Here you will see umbrellas unfolding and shielding people from the sun's rays especially during mid-day. While this is mostly done by women, men occasionally succumb to the practice ( although they use umbrellas more identified with men). In golf courses, you see the men using umbrellas while waiting for their turns at the greens or fairways...Have you ever wondered where the term " parasol" ( aka prettier version of the umbrella) came from. If my Spanish is not rusty, I think it comes from two words " para" and "sol" - or "for the sun"...We even have a local Maytime tradition where young ladies and their escorts take part in a semi-religious procession dressed in their finery, with the men shielding the fair maidens from the sun with a parasol ( beautifully-made umbrellas). *We must have also inherited the mid-day custom of a "siesta" ( rest) from our three centuries of association as a colony of Spain -- some establishments are closed and some people actually practice a mid-day rest custom. This originated in Spain, where the sun is also more intense compared to the more northern parts of Europe. Maybe it is not only to rest from the languid atmosphere but it may have also originated as a healthy practice ( of avoiding the midday sun). Of course, as we adapt to more western practices, the custom of a mid-day rest is fading. *We are also not very fond of walking long stretches because it is too hot. Again, this attitude is beginning to be a little less popular as people begin to realize the beneficial impact of this aerobic activity...but that would still be in the minority. If we can take a ride, we will avoid walking the few blocks. When I come to visit NYC, I am sometimes guilty of trying to find a bus or subway ride or a taxi to minimize my walking - LOL! Unless of course a more important activity takes precedence - retail therapy ( aka shopping) *We are an archipelago of 7100 islands - presumably we do have a lot of magnificent beaches. But do we really have a beach culture like Australia? Er, no ... too hot! Going to the beach is more of an event ( usually social) than a daily occurence! We will have our seaside homes, but we choose ones that would be used more to savor the breezes and watch the views...and much less to go to the water as often as we could. Even those with pools, will wait till after the sun starts to go down, including evenings which are still comforable, or wake up early in the morning for a dip. Just sharing how we cope with the strong sunlight over here! Jo

An account from Gus Worland, Hugh's best mate -- www.triplem.com.au/sydney/shows/grill-team/blog/2013/11/hugh-jackmans-cancer-scare/The link shows a closeup of where the basal cell carcinoma was located. Also, Gus talks about his phone call with Hugh, after the surgery. He said that he talked to Hugh on the way to work, presumably on this Monday ( it is Monday on this side of the world now). soundcloud.com/#triplem-sydney/hugh-jackmans-cancer-scareIt looks like the surgery to take out the cancerous cells was done on Friday ( presumably Australia time, so it must have been sometime Thursday in NYC), and if I heard it right the cosmetic reconstructive surgery was done over the weekend... and Hugh is fine, if otherwise a little groggy. Gus also mentions that the Jackmans will be back in Australia for Christmas! Jo

Thank God for Deb. The pictures of them together tell the story don't they? Listening to Gus was a bit reassuring but this was a big jolt. I'm worried about his spirits and glad he will be going "home" for Christmas. Hoping the Aussie paps will give him a broader berth. I doubt we'll see him at the beach this trip but I'd sure be relieved if we did.
I hope he's up to doing the Christmas special taping in DC on the 15th.

Good to see that his love of sports ( esp cricket) has helped keep up his spirits --
That current tweet was a followup of the ff --

I get a kick out of that art installation at a former Getty gas station. Sometimes my NYC-bound bus takes the Holland rather than the Lincoln Tunnel and passes it by. It's at 10th Ave. & 24th St. That whimsical oddity is the most interesting part of my often protracted, frustrating rush hour trip into the city. www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/18/sheep-station_n_3943140.htmlEllen

Thanks, Ellen smiley-signs101
I love seeing outdoor art so prominently displayed. I still have a photo in front of that huge L-O-V-E modernistic outdoor sculpture somewhere in downtown Manhattan ( is my sense of direction still correct?). Is it still there? I also enjoy sitting down in the courtyard garden at the MoMA...and even pocket parks seem like interesting art concepts to me.

Photo shared by another HJ fansite -- vk.com/hughjackmania#/hughjackmania?w=wall-38068_95329Hope he is healing well! Is this the first time we have seen his face in a smile (including his eyes) since he shared the post-surgery photo with the public? Did he spend Thanksgiving holidays at the Hamptons ( Parrish Art Museum sign, in the photo background)? Jo

That's what it looks like. Hope they had a relaxed Thanksgiving as his surgical site heals. Ellen His wound still looks sore though, poor baby! smiley-hug005 I was surprised to see that nobody posted Hugh's Thanksgiving tweets...including me smiley-whacky078 smiley-signs002 You & Jo are right...I think his tweets were from the Hamptons: Thanksgiving day tweet: "Turkey by the sea. Happy Thanksgiving!!!" and the next day he tweeted: "What a sight to wake up to! #herecomesthesun" It was a beautiful picture of sunrise over the ocean but the pic seems to be gone now & I didn't save it Later that day he tweeted "Taking a walk with Dali." They seem to be walking on the beach. Sue

Yeah, that's weird, when you click on the link the pic is not there. Did you see his tweet today for Deb's birthday? Funny, I had always thought her birthday was much earlier in the year, but it's Dec. 1st. (if he's still in the U.S. that is because he posted it 3 hours ago) Nancy

Gee, can't imagine why those multimillionaires skipped the Black Friday sales. I hope Hugh sang "A Spoonful of Sugar." That's how I think of him. Tablespoon-sized. Ellen
