The awards ( nominations and wins) will soon be in the headlines -- the major ones at least. Hugh will be back in LA this weekend, not just for the G'Day Australia event -- www.news.com.au/breaking-news/wor....i-1226549334368but also for the Golden Globes ( Jan 13) !!Jo

Tom Hooper has just won a nomination from the Directors Guild ( which includes film and TV directors). Hopefully this will turn into an Oscar nod!
Earlier, the producers of Les Miserables were also among 10 nominees for the Producers Guild Award.
Hugh and Anne were part of the nominees for acting awards from the Screen Actors Guild.
It looks like the guilds ( many of whom are AMPAS voters, too) are validating the artistic appeal of the musical.

Was just about to post the good news about Hooper. Dare we hope that the various guilds actually make up their own minds and aren't heavily influenced by critics?

I did a little sleuthing ---
*SAG counts over 100,000 in membership ( however only about 1,172 members are AMPAS voting members, which is about 20% of AMPAS votes)
*DGA has over 15,000 members ( from film and TV) and on their ballot, it is not the name of the director but the name of the film that is written! So, it was the directing of Les Miserables which got the nomination! But its AMPAS members are only 6.4% of total AMPAS votes.
Both are peer recognition awards however!
Here is the breakdown of the AMPAS voter profile ( usually the nominations originate only from the specific branch - such as acting honors to be given by the actors branch...but final votes come from the entire membership)
The Oscars -Voting Academy Award members by the numbers (from AwardsDaily) --
Actors Branch: 1,172 Art Directors Branch: 367 Cinematographers Branch: 206 Directors Branch: 369 Documentary Branch: 166 Executives Branch: 443 Film Editors Branch: 224 Makeup Artists & Hairstylists Branch: 121 Music Branch: 232 Producers Branch: 450 Public Relations Branch: 368 Short Films and Feature Animation Branch: 349 Sound Branch: 401 Visual Effects Branch: 294 Writers Branch: 376 At Large: 246
Total: 5,784 voting members

Someone on a theater site said that the makeup of the DGA is much wider and different than that of the AMPAS body who nominate the Best Director, and that he predicts Hooper will be replaced by David O. Russell in the eventual Oscar noms. I hope not.

Some thoughts --
*If Les Miserables is among the Best British film nominees and the only British one among Best Film nominees -- does it follow that it will win Best British Film award? Or are there certain fixed criteria for Best British film ( such as the number of British cast/creatives/crew or the number of locations in the UK or origin of screenplay or source material)??
*Interesting that while his two actors and most of the technical/creatives won nods ( except for Editing), Hooper was snubbed for Director.
*The vote for Hugh validates his acting and singing choices in the movie - especially meaningful because the English version ( and Bring Him Home) originated in England, which the BAFTA represents.
*Too bad there is no award for Best Song
*I wonder why Sam Barks was snubbed for Rising Star or debut. So, a theatre actor is snubbed in a movie musical?
*The snub of Hooper - I understand that he was also snubbed for The King's Speech by BAFTA - I wonder, among us, if this has something to do with his reputation for being difficult to work with ( too exacting, pushes too hard, etc)?? Hmmm...
Btw, the winners will be announced on February 10, 2013!
Remember last year when Hugh and Russell were asked to be part of the presenting teams? Jacko and Russ - LOL!

Part of the comments from the UK The Guardian talking about the immense possibility of a BAFTA sweep by "Lincoln" -- www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/jan/09/bafta-nominations-2013-lincolnLes Misérables may get a fair few prizes – an award for Hugh Jackman as best actor is not an impossibility, although his chances are vanishingly small as he is up against Daniel Day-Lewis. Jackman gives an excellent performance, though, and in any other year, he would be an odds-on favourite, and the film itself is a unique and in its way remarkable spectacle.Jo

I'm a little puzzled by Ben Affleck's being nominated for Best Actor. He was fine but not really a standout. Directing is another matter; it was a very well done movie. But all the non-DDL noms may be moot if indeed LINCOLN sweeps--curiously, without its director being nominated.
Why, oh why couldn't Spielberg have made Lincoln the year before, as previously planned, with Liam Neeson?

Why, oh why couldn't Spielberg have made Lincoln the year before, as previously planned, with Liam Neeson? Ellen I know..very frustrating...just hoping the Academy will not award DDL wih his 3rd Oscar since they really don't like to give out more than two Oscars to an actor...Meryl Streep got her 3rd after being nominated many times between her 2nd and 3rd Oscar. How is it possible for "Lincoln" to sweep if it's director is not nominated? Spielberg seems to get snubbed a lot. I have not seen the movie; but I've heard that people have fallen asleep during it. Well, I'll risk sounding like a broken record....but, Argo & Lincoln were NOT great movies. Good movies yes, not great. To nominate Ben Afleck for either best actor or best director baffles me. getting the nom. for best director instead of Tom Hooper makes no sense and proves that these things are political. Best Actor nom is just ridiculous, I could name a dozen better performances last year, even the kid who played Naomi's son in The Impossible! It's not like there weren't many, many nomination worthy films to choose from. Flight & The Impossible were both better than Argo and I have to say again, that I thought Lincoln was mostly boring! Nothing for Denzel or Naomi either?? And The Impossible should have been nominated for some kind of effects or cinematography awards. I'm becoming more & more jaded on the subject of these Awards! Lincoln at this point just resembles a runaway train and DDL with it. I don't think either deserves that status. I can only hope that it's the same runaway train that The Social Network was riding a couple years ago. At the time I felt the same way about TSN as I do about Lincoln so fingers crossed. Of course, it goes without saying what I think the best film of the year is and who should win best actor! Sue

Yay!! :-/ Also glad to see Skyfall getting some love. I thought it was terrific and I'm not even a James Bond fan! So, pleasantly surprised! Can someone please explain to me what was so cinematically superior about Lincoln??? Surely I must be missing something. Did anyone here see The Impossible?? Am I alone in my amazement at how they shot the underwater stuff and the actual tsunami action too?? Sue

Russell, gracious as ever --
>>>Russell Croweþ@russellcrowe
Big day for @realhughjackman Number 1 album in the US and a @bafta best actor nomination , congrats mate !!<<<
I wish it had been different for Russell -- if the noise re his singing had been less vociferous and people concentrated more on his interpretation of the character -- he could have joined his mate at the BAFTA special night!

Very surprised that Phoenix got the nod over John Hawkes and that Ben Affleck was snubbed for Best Director. This could be a year of big surprises.

Now all that needs is to happen is for DDL to withdraw from the race. That'll happen, right? Seriously, though, the nomination was the best we could expect and a wonderful boon to his career. Maybe from now on it won't be "Oh, yeah, that Wolverine guy," but "Academy Award-nominated actor." Yesssss! And if it's a tie, as I dream of, an even better introductory phrase! Ellen
