I was thinking -- *Maybe DDL and Denzel will split the vote of the older demos at AMPAS *Maybe Cooper and Phoenix will split the vote of the fanboys at AMPAS *Maybe Weinstein will split his campaign between Cooper and Phoenix *Which leaves Jackman ;D LOL - wishful thinking ? Jo

A nomination for Hugh and Les Mis in a year of great films, with a field of great actors is awesome. A win would be phenomenal - go HUGH

I like that train of thought I read on some blog earlier: There is no reasoning on the outcome of the Oscar votes. We all see that every year. The two most likely winners are Hugh and DDL. Compare/Contrast - DDL has won twice. This is Hugh's first nomination. EVERYONE loves Hugh. EVERYONE. It's not out of the question that when members consider their vote, they will give much weight to the oportunity to bring another great actor into the club, especially one so loved. Not to say I won't be chewing my fingers off on Oscar night! LOL!

Hi aLL. I guess that guy that called Hugh"that old washed up actor" are eating his words today. Like all of you I am so happy, crying, and remembering that day at BOB when he promised me "he would try his best" to bring that statue home. Everything's done. Now he's in the home stretch. If he doesn't get it, I'm going to need more then a valium and my mouth will have to be duct taped. Congratulations to you, this should not have been the first nominations, but I'm sure it won't be the last. Good things come to those who wait. And we've all waited, and known. > > > > > > >

So ecstatically happy for Hugh & the movie! Again Tom Hooper is snubbed. I'm glad he got the DGA nomination. Director's Guild presumably has members who recognize good direction when they see it. Hugh so deserves to win this.> :-/ It's a superb performance on so many levels. While DDL may be a good actor, he did not give a better performance than Hugh this year! Hugh should have been nominated for The Fountain at the very least and he deserves to be recognized for the truly gifted actor that he is! I know Hugh will take it with his usual grace win or lose, but I'm not nearly as pure as he is and I will not be happy with anything less than a win! Sue

Good Day for the Southern Hemisphere: Three Australians -- Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) -- are among this year's acting Oscar nominees, something that has happened only twice before, in 1998 and 2010

Hugh's Statement: "Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables “I hadn’t planned to listen live to the announcements, but when I got into the car this morning to go to work, the driver had the nominations streaming as they were being broadcast. To be honest, it’s very exciting but all a bit surreal, and it hasn’t fully sunk in yet. This is a brilliant awards year that has been defined by an eclectic list of stories that have been told by incredibly talented and courageous filmmakers, and it’s an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as the other nominees in the Best Actor category. Having hosted the show, I have seen so many different sides of the Oscars, but to be an actual nominee is something I never would have dreamed possible.” — Jackman

Someone on a theater site said this was the first time since 1979 that an actor (Roy Scheider) in a musical (ALL THAT JAZZ, which I'd actually call a quasi-musical) was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar! That's no mean feat. Way to go, Hugh!

Know what I'd love to see at the Oscars ceremony? Both Hugh and Seth MacFarlane are huge fans of musicals. I'd like to see them do a medley of songs from Oscar-nominated and -winning movies!
Anybody have an "in" with Oscars producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan?

For Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, a Bittersweet Day By MELENA RYZIK
Anne Hathaway was humming. There was a brief, unexpected lull in her retinue of press calls this morning, and Ms. Hathaway was on hold, with a tune stuck in her head. And it was not exactly musical theater.
“I was humming ‘Thrift Shop,’” by the rapper Macklemore and the producer Ryan Lewis. “Because,” she explained, “you know what the main rhyme in the whole thing is? ‘This is’” – profanity! – “’awesome.’”
Audiences have seen Ms. Hathaway belt, up close, as Fantine in “Les Misérables,” but she’s been known to rap, too. Asked for a curse-free expression of her feelings, “I am happy,” she said, from the floor of the bedroom in her Los Angeles home. “And elated and proud.”
Ms. Hathaway, who may have secretly auditioned for a part in “Les Miz” when she hosted the Oscars two years ago and sang “On My Own” to Hugh Jackman, said being a nominee was much less stressful than hosting. “I much prefer this version of participating,” she said.
But Mr. Jackman, a fellow “Les Miz” nominee, for best actor for playing Valjean, and also a former Oscar host, sounded ready to take on more performance duties. “Suddenly,” a new addition to the score for the movie, was nominated for best original song.
“I’m happy to sing that song whenever someone asks me,” he said, on the phone from a town near Atlanta, where he is starting a new movie, “Prisoners.”
Mr. Jackman and Ms. Hathaway also expressed their disappointment that their director, Tom Hooper, was snubbed.
“Look, no one shares in the eight nominations more than Tom,” Mr. Jackman said, adding later, “He has no reason to be anything but proud of what he has achieved, and I’m proud to have worked with him.”
Ms. Hathaway echoed the thought: “I know I wouldn’t be nominated if he hadn’t directed me,” and said: “I saw Tom give everything he had to the making of the film. He edited that film in five-and-a-half months, sleeping two-and-a-half hours a night. I’ve never worked with anyone who gave more to a project.”
“It is a bittersweet morning for everyone who worked on the film,” she continued. But, she said, “that’s the Oscars.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After learning the nominations - I was a little unexplicably sad ( feeling bittersweet) because of the relative snub of the Les Miserables creative team ( director, screenplay writer, cinematographer and film editor) -- if there are any people, other than the cast, who worked the hardest it is this group of people -- especially with the short filming schedule ( 3 1/2 months, for a big musical epic) and a very short post-production schedule ( 5 1/2 months when some epic films would require at least a year -- remember "Australia"?). I had followed the entire pre-production, filming and post-production phases and know to some extent how much effort they had put in into the finished product!
To me, it was Tom Hooper to whom we owe the movie that is now being enjoyed by the public the most!

It is sad how much hate do Les Mis get at movie boards. Anne is literally hated for everything she says or does and some seem to openly celebrate that Hooper wasn´t nominated (those silly Fincher fans who still can´t forget the "snub"). Yes, the directing had some odd choices - the editing was weird and it was just a purely experimental. But what is wrong with that? They did something new, something that wasn´t done before. And yet, David O´Russell, who made an average romantic comedy is celebrated...I think this means that you shouldn´t try to do something new, they will just make it look like a failure...

Tonight ( there in the USA) is also BFCA night.
Will the Les Miserables team win tonight? Hmmm...the critics have not been kind.

Unfortunately, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK took the ensemble award tonight. I have a bad feeling about the Globes. On the entertainment news shows this evening, the reporters said how DDL's biggest competition was Bradley Cooper. It seems all of a sudden, now that SLP"s director was nominated, that movie and its cast are right behind LINCOLN. Hope I'm wrong.

The Critics Choice was pretty well bought and paid for by Harvey Weinstein. If Les Mis got shafted, at least Argo took picture and Director and DDL got actor for Lincoln. Better quality than a totally forgettable SLP.

I thought the Critic's Choice Awards was one of the most boring and awkward awards shows I've ever seen. I just finished watching it and it was almost painful in parts. The good news was that Hugh looked lovely. (This was the only photo I could find of him from tonight) - Alicia

And maybe the people who also voted for all four acting honors and BP/screenplay/director for the Oscar nods for SLP ( which coincidentally will be opening wide this week ). He is most notorious for using the purse to pay for his GGlobes awards. ...A few years ago, there was a public accusation aired by a former member of the Hollywood Foreign Press that Weinstein pays for all-expenses trips for some members of the HFPA ...So, if Hugh comes out empty handed on Sunday -- don't cry --- it can almost be predicted now -- unless there is divine interference !! This is such a sad state of affairs -- I have never been more disillussioned...and why it is tolerated is beyond me Our new government new motto is " Aiming for the straight path!" loosely translated. Maybe Weinstein and some of the awards bodies should come over and see what we are doing with our former government officials ( e.g., our former lady president is now languishing in a government hospital under house arrest, with miles of cases against her!)... Les Miserables is all about a man who goes through a process of redemption and tries to walk the straight path! And he did! I guess some people do not like to be reminded of that I will no longer be interested to subscribe to live feeds of the various awards ceremonies which are televised! I have been disillusioned enough Jo

Whaddaya know -- LINCOLN lost to ARGO for Best Drama Movie!!
When Affleck won over Spielberg for Best Director, I thought - hey, Lincoln is vulnerable...And so it happened!
Does this increase the chances of Les Miserables and Hugh Jackman at the Oscars?
