From " South Pacific," I am going to purposely mis-quote a line from a song, "'There is nothing like our Hugh'"... I have seen " Les Miserables" 3 times in the cinema (as opposed to the theatre/stage), on that glorious big screen, and would LOVE to see it again, so it can tie with the only other movie that I have seen 4 times on the big screen: " Titanic," though I DID see " Titanic 3-D" last April, which would TECHNICALLY be 5 times... I might be able to see it again on Thursday, if my schedule permits... Come on in, the water's fine, and the people here are FANTASTIC! Gretchen, yes, quite fantastic! And I like your phrases, too. I'm right with you: I've watched Les Miserables five times so far: three of those on IMAX (for me it's worth the extra cash, at least for THIS movie). And I plan to go back a couple more times at least. It's in 21 cinemas on it's fourth week though it's not on the IMAX any longer. I say, absolutely: go back to watch it if you can. You'll get no discouragement from me! Alma [initial QUOTE tag replaced - I hope that's how you wanted it to look. ADMIN]

Mmmmhh... just observed that though I responded by clicking on "quote" it didn't place your message in one of those little boxes... could be because I deleted a couple of lines from the beginning of your quoted post. Slowly, but I'll get the hang of it eventually. Alma

Live from Lincoln Center will be presenting the NY Philharmonic staging of Carousel on April 26 at 10 pm, with Kelli O'Hara as Julie and Nathan Gunn as Billy Bigelow. Kathy, I know you'll enjoy this, even though it may not feature our "ideal" cast. Carol

I've seen Kelli O'Hara on stage but I'm not familiar with Nathan Gunn, so I Googled him... and the first thing I found made me smile. It's nice to know that Hugh has become a benchmark for musical theater talent! I'll be watching, too. More info (and some audio samples) on his home page: www.nathangunn.com/

Half my dream team! Love Kelly O'Hara!
But...I went to Nathan Gunn's homepage, and OMG!!!! This guy has my dream baritone sound! I listened to sample tracks, and was impressed with his choice of folk and art songs. I might order a CD or two.
I majored in vocal music, and have a Masters in Music Ed. One of my teachers was the great choral conductor Paul Salamunovich, so it takes a lot to impress me. Nathan Gunn's voice impresses me. Hope he can act. Can't wait for the PBS CAROUSEL.

I just realized that Nathan Gunn is one of the leads on the studio recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein's ALLEGRO. i've been listening to his voice, but only associated him with the character. He fit so well with my ideal R&H sound that I didn't even check to see who the singer was!

Thanks for the link Valerie, I hadn't heard him before. Wow, what a great voice! If you go to the Listen to Nathan page and click on the album covers you can hear some other samples on Amazon. I'm definitely looking forward to this version of Carousel now! I love Kelli too! Sue

I have heard his Lancelot in that Lincoln Center concert of CAMELOT, with Marin Mazzie and Gabriel Byrne. I think I even got the DVD because Camelot is one of my favorite musicals of all time.

Jo I'd love a copy of that! Do you know if it's for sale anywhere? I looked at Amazon but maybe I put in the wrong title. Is it Called Lincoln Center Camelot or something? The LC website doesn't seem to have a store. Sue

It's an unofficial copy which I got sometime ago. Jo Oh, I get it! It would be nice to have but the powers that be in the theater world just don't get it. They would make extra money if they recorded the shows, concerts etc. It wouldn't hurt any revenue it would add to it. The vast majority of people would never get to see it on stage and once a show is over...it's over! So what's the problem with these theater producers anyway? Done ranting! I'm glad the Carousel concert will at least be on PBS, or did I read that wrong? I have to go back and re-read this thread since I don't even know when it's going to be on. Senior moments. Sue

I think my copy of Camelot was actually recorded from an official telecast. There are YouTube clips of some of the songs -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1qxRZXrtz8Nathan Gunn sings " C'EST MOI " here. It is often overshadowed by "If Ever I Would Leave You", but "C'est Moi" is the quintessential Lancelot song! Loved Robert Goulet's version of it! Here's IF EVER I WOULD LEAVE YOU, also by Nathan -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrE5Sve_VzcAlso loved Robert Goulet's version -- this is the song which made him a great hit onstage ( with Julie Andrews and Richard Burton). I was able to get a copy of the DVD of the cast recording ( long after my original vinyl copy warped in our tropical weather ). Jo

I used to listen to Robert Goulet quite a bit when I was younger. And watch when he did TV specials. I used to love it when he and Carol Lawrence did things together. I never got to see him live but my son saw him in a production of South Pacific in Hartford. Sue

I saw Robert Goulet on Broadway ( "The Happy Time", where he played a French-Canadian) when I first lived in NYC. Also, I went to see him make a public appearance at Macy's ( it was some kind of small auditorium) and was seated close enough to the front to see how "brilliant blue" his eyes were - LOL! A few years ago, he was already in his 70's and I saw him in his last Broadway appearance in the revival of La Cage Aux Folles. I think he played Billy Bigelow in some TV version of CAROUSEL. He's singing SOLILOQUY here -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lYcaQnALYcJo

While we're talking CAROUSEL, here's an audio clip of Frank Sinatra singing SOLILOQUY! The buzz then was that he was going to play Billy Bigelow in the movie version, but he dropped out ( I don't know why) -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1DGLhyPOewIn his inimitable way of singing! A different tempo -- but wonderful! I wonder if Hugh ever heard this version? Jo

I loved Goulet in THE HAPPY TIME, too. I remember his hitting a few notes in "I Don't Remember You" that made every hair stand up on end, just shatteringly beautiful.
If I correctly recall what I'd read once about Sinatra and CAROUSEL, he did indeed start filming it. But then the producers decided they wanted him to do each take twice, once for regular-sized screen, once for Cinemascope, and "one-take" Sinatra balked and walked. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Did I dream that?

According to an interview with Shirley Jones, she and Sinatra had already pre-recorded the score and were on set in Maine ready to shoot. Todd A-O and cinemascope were the big new thing, and Oklahoma! had been filmed in two different formats. Sinatra walked off the set because he wanted to be paid twice for filming in two different formats. Oscar Hammerstein called Gordon MacRae, who was doing his nightclub act in either Vegas or Reno. Gordon got on a plane, lost weight as quickly as possible, and took over the role of Billy. I believe that he had already appeared in CAROUSEL several times on stage in summerstock productions. I also believe that Judy Garland was originally set to play Julie in the film. Interesting how things can change!

Being a "Sinatra-phile" before an Ozalot, I can confirm that Sinatra did "balk and walk" as Ellen so poetically put it.
But he continued to perform soliloquy until the end.

Didn't know where to put this; it's a TV Alert, although Hugh will not be appearing. PBS will air Carousel on Friday, April 26 (Live from Lincoln Center) with Kelli O'Hara and Nathan Gunn. In the short clip they are airing I thought I caught a glimpse of Schuler Hensley, and I just confirmed this: lc.lincolncenter.org/press/518This will be the first time I watch it complete. I look forward to all Ozalots' comments, specially yours, Kathy. Alma Oops. Ok, corrected the spelling of your name, Kathy!

Shortly after I entered Hugh fandom in '03, I contacted the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization to ask if they were ever planning to release a DVD of the '02 CAROUSEL concert at Carnegie Hall. The woman I spoke with sighed and said they'd gotten a ton of calls with the same request. They did not, unfortunately, professionally record it as they had no idea what they had on their hands, she said--i.e., Hugh fans clamoring for a record of that performance. Impresarios have become more marketing savvy since then, as evidenced by the recordings of the Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall and other theater-related events. I'm glad the Gunn-O'Hara one will be telecast; perhaps it will be released as a DVD-BluRay down the road, as COMPANY was. Gunn was a standout Lancelot when PBS aired LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER's otherwise so-so CAMELOT a few years ago. Ellen

I think it must have been just the Carnegie organization that had no idea how commercially attractive a DVD release of Carousel would have been. The Rodgers and Hammerstein Group must have known how strong the appeal of Hugh Jackman was, as he was involved in the RNT revival of Oklahoma! and R&H had been involved in it. They did allow the release of the production on VHS/DVD... I also have a feeling it was their organization which insisted on Hugh as Billy Bigelow Besides they had other attractions like Audra McDonald (already a Broadway success then and an operatic singer), the newly emerging Norbert Leo Butz, Blythe Danner, etc -- I think their judgment must have been a little skewed when they disregarded appeals for a recording prior to the concert itself ( I heard they were already getting calls before the actual concert). Ironically, the one who made money was the enterprising audience member who recorded it from way up in the balcony. I myself paid a hefty price on eBay to get one of the earliest unofficial copies
