Edited to add: Sorry Valerie, for some reason I thought Jo wrote that! ;D

Thanks, Valerie. That was the one and only time I'd ever purchased Cowboys and Indians magazine at Barnes & Nobles. One guess why.

Quorn's John Simpson is the dancing flippers in Happy Feet, the cheering audience in The Sapphires, and the water being poured over Hugh Jackman in Baz Luhrmann's Australia. From an article about an Australian foley artist... There's just something about the way that sentence is worded. I think it's the concept of being the water poured over Hugh Jackman in Baz Luhrmann's Australia. ;D Full article here: www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2012/09/06/3584403.htm

LOL - he is destroying the illusion ( of the sound of the water languorously falling over his body) of that most watched scene from the movie!!
I remember how Hugh's face went red when Oprah and the audience sighed and swooned and clapped over that particular clip from the movie!

Thanks for reviving the memories of AUSTRALIA.
What a pity - had the movie been better edited and not meandered too much, it could have been included in the list of much-praised Jackman canon of work ( which includes The Fountain, The Prestige, and Erskineville Kings). I thought it could have had more drama if Baz had focused on the back story of the Drover more.

When I saw him at BOB, that was when we had the short conversation that he was "robbed" for Australia. I'll never forget that day. It was the one that I made him promise to bring home that Oscar for Les Mis. It seems so long ago, and now it's almost here > I agree with Jo about the Oscar value. I love Hugh, but it WAS a LONGGGGG movie. I think I'll did it out and watch it again. It's been a long time.

Well we've heard my "Australia Rant". It should have been a great movie. It is certainly still fun to watch, but from a script and technical standpoint is is a god awful mess and the cast particularly Hugh were robbed.

I thought it could have had more drama if Baz had focused on the back story of the Drover more. Well, this has been one of my pet peeves for years!! I hated the way it was edited. It made me dislike the total hands on of Baz and I think it ruined Hugh's chances for at least an Oscar nomination. He was so wonderful in that movie but I'm sure many Oscar voters were as turned off by the editing of the movie as I was. It should have been so much better. And I remember back on the old board when we talked about those clips and photos of more intimacy and love scenes that were cut from the movie...we were not happy! I really hope Les Miserables will be vindication for Hugh and bring him the accolades he deserves! Love those Australia pix though! :o Sue

I think if 'Australia' had been edited down and tightened up, it could have been amazing. There were too many unnecessary scenes. But I think what bugged me the most is that it's called 'Australia', it's filmed there, the cast and crew are all Aussies, and yet when it came time shoot some of the outdoor scenes, they choose CGI. You can't do a sweeping epic about a country and then let a green screen fill in for half of the country. Especially now when people are more apt to spot special effects. And I still hold out hope that the Drover will at least get a novel one day. Maybe we should start a campaign letter to Baz Luhrmann? - Alicia

I've always thought they missed a bet not making it a "Drover" bio ala "Little Big Man". Born in 1855 goes to WW I in 1915. Returns to a dying "wife/not wife" because it was illegal. Becomes a Drover with his aboriginal family ala "Clancy of the Overflow". Meets Mrs. Boss and WW II. Returns to post war Australia and all the cultural upheavals and finally in his old age sees the 100th celebration featuring Peter Allen.
My other idea was Drover at Beersheba in WW I - Great riding, adventure, Aussie hero etc. Anyone know a good screenwriter. :-)

Elton John also wrote a nice musical tribute to the character of The Drover...but it was featured only as the second song in the end-credits ( which disqualified it from being considered for Best Original Song for the Oscars). I prefer it to the Boab song that was featured first in the end-credit.
When there was news that Elton was so excited to compose the song for the movie, I doubt he realized it would be relegated to the end-credits.
I wonder why Baz decided to edit that song from the movie proper - I have a feeling that he originally intended to do the backstory of the Drover but the movie became too long. Maybe he edited the wrong part? I could do without the not-so-amusing antics of Lady Ashley at the start - I much preferred her reformed character later on.

Jo, A lady of the manor used to running things, accomplished equestrienne, travels 10,000 miles on a trip in planes that took a minimum of three days to bring home a wayward husband. The last leg is completed in a small sea plane with no bathroom facilities. She then steps out looking as if she just finished shopping at Harrods and proceeds to have a Victorian hissy fit because a crowd of boorish men are laughing at her panties in the dust. I DON'T THINK SO Not to mention that it was preceded by the magically moving maid serving a tea cart at two different ends of the stable in one cut. Is there a "Baz Luhrman upsets me" Fan Club?

Jamie, I'll bet you can't wait for Luhrmann's THE (NOT SO) GREAT GATSBY. Agreed that AUSTRALIA could have been, should have been so much greater with more judicious writing, editing and direction. All the ingredients were present, just not used to optimal effect. At least Hugh shined brightly, although the relative failure of the move unfortunately robbed him of deserved recognition.

Everything I've seen of THE (NOT SO) GREAT GATSBY says don't get sucked in because you loved the book. I have to admit that my idea for "Drover at 105" watching Peter Allen dance on stage for the Centennial celebration would make a fun image.

Sunday is Veterans' Day (originally Armistice Day) and "Remembrance Day" in the Commonwealth. One of the most poignant songs ever written about WWI was ["The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". This lovely video actually features an image of Hugh as "The Drover" ... a man who fought in that horrid war, commemorated in Australia on April 25 for ANZAC Day. www.youtube.com/embed/VK6rZ--DhZM

In this forthcoming expanded storyline for the 6-episode AUSTRALIA/FARAWAY DOWNS -- will there be a deeper look into the background on The Drover's life -- the tragic story of his wife and how be became a drover with no commitments to anyone?
Elton Johns wrote the song The Drover but it was only played as a Post-credits song... but it gave a hint of the life he led.
I won't be able to have access to this streaming series. May I request to please post any information shared in the streaming version for any information re any home video copies (DVD/BluRay) that are made available. Thanks.
