I have really been enjoying the retrospectives on BBC America. I first got into it in the late 60s/early 70s. Tom Baker was my favorite. Then I lost interest (got too busy with work/family) and became reacquainted when David Tennant took over the role. I've been hooked ever since, but I can't say I'm too thrilled with the most recent "companion" - maybe I was too intrigued by the unique direction the series took with Amy Pond (and her having a serious love interest apart from her relationship with The Doctor), but this latest one (can't even remember her name) seems much too young and rather dull to me. I like the original episode that introduced the character, but I don't think she merited the "upgrade" to companion. I know some of you are fans of this LONG running series. Did you enjoy the most recent plot twists? Are you looking forward to the 50th Anniversary celebration? David Tennant warns Doctor Who fans that 50th anniversary celebration Time Lord performance may seem "different"More on the 50th Anniversary hereThis is about a new kids' book. I love the new series but agree that "Clara" just doesn't quite mesh. Maybe the "new" Doctor after Matt leaves will give them a chance to re-think or use her differently. If may be that she doesn't gel with the current doctor. I like Matt and the Pond episodes, but I'm definitely ready for a new direction.

I was wondering how John Hurt was going to fit in after seeing him at the end of the final show with Matt. So that was an interesting tidbit from David Tennant. I've been re-watching the entire series and hope to finally be done by November. I think I'm on season 18 of the 26 original seasons. There are many missing and some have been recreated with stills and bits of video and some narration which was all quite interesting. Admittedly, I've skipped a few episodes because some of them are really boring, but I've enjoyed watching some things like the shows where we first find out certain things or see some of the enemies for the first time. I'm becoming quite an expert on the Daleks LOL! There were a couple of interesting regenerations and, unfortunately, a couple of missing ones I've seen some comments on forums & twitter about a female Doctor Who but I don't think that actually works for the canon and history of the Doctor. He is a Time Lord and there are Time Ladies and there have been a couple on the show over the years so to suddenly make the Lord a female they'd actually have to make him a transsexual LOL!!! I'm anxious to see who the new Doctor will be. The 50th Ann. episode seems very ambitious considering that it's very short??? Not sure how they're going to pull that off. I am looking forward the TV movie "An Adventure in Space and Time" about William Hartnell (1st Doctor) which is being show in the UK also in November and hopefully on BBCAmerica shortly afterwards. The actor portraying him, David Bradley, bears quite a resemblance and the clips I've seen look really interesting. I kind of liked the mystery of Clara and the way it ended in the last episode showing her helping all the Doctors. I thought she would be gone but I guess she is going to be back at least for the beginning of the new Doctor episodes. Over the years it's always been helpful having a familiar face to be there when the Doctors have regenerated...continuity, comfort levels and all that I guess. So it seems we'll have to stay tuned to see how all that plays out. I admit I'm quite fascinated with the whole evolution of the show. David Tennant is my favorite Doctor, although Jon Pertwee was fascinating. Sarah Jane, River Song & Capt Jack are my favorite companions. Sue

I just started watching a few months ago but I'm obsessed with the show. I started with Matt Smith and I've seen nearly all of his run (I think I'm missing the first half of season 7) so he's my Doctor. Although I do like David Tennant. And maybe I'm the only one (I hope not!) but I've cried more during episodes of Doctor Who than I have any other show. Especially the one where Eleven and Amy meet Van Gogh. I was a mess.

I am trying to get through the original DW right now but I got stuck in the middle of Baker´s run. So far, my favourite is Jon Pertwee. I have been a fan since 2006 so I am curious who will be the new Doctor. I just read we could know it by Sunday! I hope it will be someone a little older than Matt.

It was just announced that a special show to announce the Doctor #12 will be simulcast on Sunday BBC One at 7 pm and BBC America at 2 pm ET! I hope it's someone good. Some of the speculated names have been really weird! I'll be watching! smiley-happy036 Sue

I heard about it! I am very excited. I really want someone over 35, maybe finally someone even in his 50s because younger is not believeable. Or someone close to Ecclestone´s age when he was the Doctor. I have nothing against Matt Smith personally but I never really thought he was that interesting and I never believed his Doctor. It was actually Rory who made the episodes interesting for me most of the time (I couldn´t stand Amy most of the time). I am not one of those anti-Mofatt people but he tends to overcomplicate things (however, his Sherlock is perfect) so I hope he will choose well.

I hope they don't pick some young guy just to lure in a younger audience. I also never liked Amy after the first couple of shows! There are several more stations that are simulcasting the show on Sunday for people in other countries so the interest is definitely global. I thought it was cute that they used the code name 'Houdini' to keep the name of the new Doctor a secret! Sue

Peter Capaldi! I was watching it online and got annyoed with BBC since they kept stalling and stalling... I love this choice. Finally an older Doctor, but a fine actor, well established (not over exposed), likeable and by the reaction of the audience (and how all my friends on Facebook freaked out), people will love him. Let´s hope Mofatt will give him some better material than he gave to Smith.

While I "got used to" Matt, I preferred David Tennant. This new guy looks like a great choice. Still don't like Clara. Hope there is a new companion soon.

I don´t mind Clara but she is far from favourite...I personally really loved only two companions, Donna and Rory and neither of them got the screentime they deserved (imo). I think Clara lacks a personality and she is just, sort of...there. She is supposed to be this big important companion (as they keep telling us) but I don´t believe it. I sort of hope in a male companion. I love strong female characters but I am afraid DW has usually only place for damsel in distress. New companions are definitely better than in the classic DW but it is still mostly a show about a man who falls from the stars...I think to see a man, maybe someone a little beaten by a life (a cop, for example), would be interesting to watch.

I really enjoyed this - didn't even mind Clara. (tiny wish that more of the companions had been included) I particularly enjoyed Tom Baker turning up at the end. He was my first, and one of my fave Doctors. ... now I'd like to go back and re-visit some old episodes (there are a few Doctors I missed entirely)... but not the one they're showing now. I think there's more (an "encore" broadcast) with interviews and out-takes later tonight.

Did you see the movie Adventures In Space & Time as well? I loved The Day Of The Doctor! I knew that was one of the original Doctors near the end who was the curator of The National Gallery, but not sure which one. So that was Tom Baker? In the above pic you posted, is he the 2nd from the left or which one? My favorite Doctor was David Tennant! Seeing him & Matt Smith playing off each other was a riot!

[ Adventures in Time and Space is a book - an anthology of science fiction stories - very good, but nothing to do with Dr. Who.] Tom Baker was Doctor #4 - 4th from the left in that group photo. The one with the mile-long scarf. David Tennant is my favorite of the new batch of Doctors... but Baker will always be special for me. Cheeky humour, toothy grin, a twinkle in his eye . . . and that incredible mop of curly hair. He's the one who got me "hooked" though I had seen isolated episodes of earlier Doctors. Back in "the old days" they were pretty cheesy. I'll bet they did a whole season (or more) on the budget for the episode we just watched.

Warning, this is long...grab a cup of coffee! I watched both An Adventure in Space and Time and The Day of the Doctor and enjoyed both very much. An Adventure in Space and Time is a wonderful look at the creation of the show and about the original Doctor Who, William Hartnell. David Bradley was so good as Hartnell that there were moments when I forgot it was someone else. A very interesting portrait of an older character actor. I felt quite sad for him when they replaced him on the show. Brian Cox, of X-Men 2 fame, is a hoot as the shows creator. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes creation of the show and how innovative they were even with who they hired to run it. It was a young woman named Verity Lambert who became a well known British producer. While I knew "the fact" of her it was nice seeing "the story" of her brought to life. The only thing I didn't like was a small scene where Matt Smith was suddenly there!!??!! I suppose they did it for a continuity effect but I thought it was unnecessary and took you out of the story for that moment even though it was at the end. It was fun seeing them create the Tardis and even the sound effects and the opening title visuals. I really loved The Day of the Doctor special! When I was anticipating the show, I wondered how they were going to incorporate the character of Rose after hearing that Billie Piper was in the cast. I couldn't imagine how they could bring her back & have it make sense. Well they did it in a very brilliant manner and the way they made her invisible to the future Doctors and a more mature character that wasn't really Rose was what made it work so well for me! I was so happy to see Tom Baker at the end...someone already mentioned that so not a spoiler! I'm hoping in some future show they will explain how that was possible (gaping plot hole) but I decided to completely suspend disbelief and just enjoy him being there! John Hurt was brilliant as always and like someone else mentioned Clara was ok/tolerable. I hope once she's done with the first regeneration episodes that the new Doctor will find a new companion. I liked her as the bridge in the Doctors history or whatever they called what she did in the end of last season, but I'd like to see a smarter, more mature companion or maybe a couple of companions instead of one. I always liked the shows that had more than one. I liked the playful, sometimes wary "knowingness" between #10 & #11. I loved that tiny glimpse of #12 and some of the little touches like the photo board in the top secret room that showed previous companions etc. I'm wondering if they are going to have to renumber the Doctors. It seems that John Hurt was shown regenerating into Christopher Eccleston so wouldn't that make him #10 instead of #9? Boggles the mind! Anyway, I did love the special and I'm looking forward to the Christmas special which I believe will have the regeneration of Matt Smith into Peter Capaldi. In anticipation of the anniversary, I spent most of the year watching the entire series from the very first episode "An Unearthly Child" through to the present. I won't say I actually watched all 800+ episodes in their entirety but I watched a whole lot! There are over 100 episodes that are still missing so that helped. Some are completely missing but some of the earliest incomplete episodes were put together in a very ingenious way. The clever BBC had destroyed their master copies of many of the early shows but there were bits of video scrounged from various sources plus still photos of the episodes as they were shot and most of them had intact audio recordings...I think back then they broadcast the show on the radio too so apparently the audio people were smarter than the video people LOL! Sadly, even the very first regeneration from Hartnell to Troughton was one of those, but I actually enjoyed some of those cobbled together episodes. It was like sneaking in and getting a peek into another time and place. I enjoyed many of the early episodes that were still intact but there were many episodes that were just too silly to watch so the fast forward button got a workout! Fortunately the classic episodes are all about 20 minutes long so that made it easier. They presented most of them in 4 parts and I did skip the middle parts for many and only watched parts 1 & 4. That was only after watching so many that it was clear that the middle episodes had a certain predictability about them. All in all, I'm glad I did it. I got the see a lot of the "firsts", all of the regenerations...even if some were not complete and I got to feel familiar with all 11 Doctors. I did really love Jon Pertwee #3 and would have to say that he & David Tennant are my favorites. Tom Baker was the one I was most familiar with before the new series started in 2005 so I thought he would be my favorite but #3 won me over. I found something to love in all the Doctors, even #6 Colin Baker though I didn't really like him too much! Sylvester McCoy #7 was quite endearing so he's in my top 5! When I was done with the classic episodes I re-watched some of my favorites from the new series. I appreciate some of the homages, hints, winks etc to the early years in many of the new episodes. Even in the new special when the Tardis changes back & forth in time and #10 and #11 comment on the "round things" it felt great to remember them from watching the earlier shows. In the months leading up to the special, they had several...11 I guess...little specials called The Doctors Revisited (or something similar) showcasing each Doctor and their companions. If you haven't seen them they are a great way to find out more about the history of Doctor Who and get to know some of the earlier actors and the characters they played. The shows also have some of the actors, writer etc, old and new, commenting on different aspects of the shows. Sue

Loved the show and wondering how they will resolve the Doctor having a "grave" not to mention all the doctors at the end. If he regenerates how can there be the "old" body? Did you see the global overnight figures. Doctor Who just made the Guinness Record Book www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/doctor-who/10470879/Doctor-Who-breaks-simulcast-world-record.html Quite a feat for a somewhat past middle aged gentleman. Hurt wasn't the first doctor. He was referred to as The Warrior, so the numbering is okay with Capaldi being number 12. Which brings up the regeneration thingy again as supposedly "The Doctor" can only regenerate 12 times. Moffat has his work cut out for him. Onward to Christmas special ....

Which brings up the regeneration thingy again as supposedly "The Doctor" can only regenerate 12 times. Moffat has his work cut out for him. Onward to Christmas special .... It was an amazing turnout. Saw the video of the Guinness announcement earlier today. I think it was taped at one of the 50th events & Matt, Jenna and Stephen Moffat accepted the framed certificate. Also it was announced that there were some 1500 theaters in various countries also participating in the simulcast and I saw little clips from around the world of bars & taverns having viewing parties which all seemed to be packed! Quite the accomplishment for a TV show! As for Hurt's Doctor I knew he was between McGann & Eccleston because there was a short video made with McGann called The Night of the Doctor which showed Hurt becoming the next Doctor...the War Doctor. I saw that some time last week. I was pretty sure they wouldn't change the numbers but not sure how they'd explain it. I found this article that gave a bit of a recap/explanation and their idea of how/why the numbers will stay the same. Some of you are probably asking, “Wouldn’t this revelation make Chris Eccleston the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant the eleventh, and Matt Smith the twelfth?” Thanks to semantics, the numbering does not change. The War Doctor is the same man as the Doctor, but he did not take the name “Doctor” as he chose to become a warrior. Thus, Eccleston is still considered to be the Ninth Doctor since he is the ninth incarnation to take up that name. Convoluted though it may be, all things are possible in the Doctor Who universe. I expect there will also be a story sometime soon or maybe at the end of Capaldi's reign where they will explain how there really are no set number of regenerations possible. For me the thing I most wondered about was how they will explain the elderly Tom Baker's presence. I was thrilled but.... Forgot to mention the grave issue! That whole episode brought up a lot of future possibilities as well as the notion from the special that Gallifrey is hidden or lost and potentially might be looked for...interesting dilemmas for future shows to be sure. Now, as you say, onward to the Christmas special! Sue

Thanks for the info on Chris Eccleston. (I only had a chance to skim through.) I think I agree with his attitude, though I was not fond of his version of The Doctor. (only saw a few episodes, so he may be deserving of a re-watch) I found his portrayal rather cynical and missed the "playfulness" and humor that I remembered from earlier shows. I also found his "look" to be rather harsh - angular features, (too short) cropped hair, and I think he was dressed in black most of the time. Maybe I didn't give him enough of an opportunity to endear himself. I only got re-hooked when David Tennant took over. I still like him better than this current one and am curious to see the next incarnation. "An Adventure in Space and Time" was on when I got home last night (from the first of three scheduled Thanksgiving gatherings). I got to see most of the second half. I'll try to catch the whole thing when it comes around again. It looked interesting. I'm not very familiar with the original Doctor, but I thought David Bradley did a great job as William Hartnell. I'm a Who fan, but not a fanatic, so all of that background info was news to me. (I do remember how "primitive" it was early on.) As for the series in general, I've made a conscious decisions to just "go with the flow" and not analyze all that "timey wimey" (tie me? why ME?) stuff too closely. It's the easy way out, but otherwise I'd tend to pick the thing apart and be impossible to please. With a dozen Doctors and 50 years of shows there are far too many possibilities for nit picking. The plot twists/turns are convoluted enough to just let it slide when things get screwy and imagine some logical explanation will turn up eventually. Love this composite of all of them. What was with the "Who knows?" [ WHO nose] bit at the end of The Day of the Doctor with Tom Baker? Did I miss something there? I know there are scads of additional Dr. Who adventures. Is there a good book out there that's about the series?

If course there may be an episode I don't remember where that was featured. Someone more knowledgable will have to speak up if so.

Didn't the Doctor die in that episode with the person in the spacesuit killing him? Somebody refresh my memory about that! Then the Doctor walks out from the restroom in the diner & scares Amy & Rory because they just saw him die. Was it River Song who killed him? So it was the Doctor from the future who died, right? So anyway, he probably has a grave (that was spoken of in The Day Of The Doctor) And what was River Song's original name? Oh yeah--Melody Pond!! Nancy

Thanks, Jamie. Yes, I remember Baker being funny, and punny. Probably one of the things that attracted me. I was wondering if "Who knows" (in the interrogative or declarative) had become some sort of "catch phrase" with the more recent batch of Doctors, and if there was some sort of connection, or "in joke" I missed. The "bit" seemed rather pointedly done. Didn't the Doctor die in that episode with the person in the spacesuit killing him? Somebody refresh my memory about that! Yes, someone in an astronaut's suit shot The Doctor on the shore of a lake. (In one of the episodes filmed in America. Not sure which state, but definitely the Southwest.) Amy, Rory, River, and the old guy who turned up with the gasoline can, put his body in a row boat and set it on fire adrift in the lake. (No need for a grave/burial.) An earlier version of The Doctor received the same invitation (to this particular place/time) as the others, and turned up at the diner. His was invitation #1, which was how they knew someone else had been invited, but having just seen The Doctor killed, they were surprised it was him. Later in the show (but *years* earlier in the timeline), they find a little girl (who, ultimately, turns out to be a very young Melody Pond - but we don't know that at this point) in the spacesuit (Cape Canaveral, FL?), just after they visit the (Pres. Nixon's?) Oval Office in the White House. [Where they meet the FBI/CIA (?) guy - much younger - who turns up later with the gas can.] Pretty sure Amy shoots (or tries to shoot) the little girl when they first meet her. I'm not sure if we ever find out who was in the suit when The Doctor was shot. (Why do I think it's a more adult version of Melody Pond, now called River Song?) I think this is the episode that introduces The Silence. [The guys you can't remember having seen the moment you're not looking at them... who all resemble the Edvard Munch painting Skrik (The Scream).] Aside: How can something that's such fun to watch sound so totally stupid when you try to explain it? <awww>

An earlier version of The Doctor received the same invitation (to this particular place/time) as the others, and turned up at the diner. <awww> Thanks for trying! I could swear it was River Song inside that spacesuit. I'm going to watch the episode online through Amazon (free) Nancy
