He posted this on twiiter. I love the rehearsal notes: get=git, just=jist, etc. Most of the notes are for pronunciation. Hope he frames this! Here's an idea: He could auction or sell copies of the cover for charity. I'd buy a copy of the cover, frame it, and hang it next to my 1965 letter from Richard Rodgers.

Loved how he encircled the "exclamation point" which most people ignore, except for the theatrical-minded It's remarkable how this show had opened so many doors for him! He probably did not know how a number of movers and shakers had seen him in the show -- his longtime agent Patrick Whitesell ( who is a big theatre fan), XMEN producer Lauren Shuler Donner, Harvey Weinstein, etc. I still remember my first reaction seeing him in this show -- "Hey, he has a legit stage voice!" ( and it wasn't his looks that influenced my reaction -- I couldn't see his face clearly as I was seated in Dress Circle/front mezz)...but his presence onstage was commanding!

Why did the Broadway version of the Royal National Theatre's revival of OKLAHOMA! not fare too well? Here's a critique which tries to explain why...but one can't help feeling that the critic made every effort to dislike the show -- www.nypress.com/oklahoma-oh-no/Interesting perspective, including direct comparisons with the Nicholas Hytner acclaimed revival of Carousel. A good read though even if one may not agree with the critic in full. Re the Jackman references and other aspects --

I agree, Jo. The review feels like a pre-judgment of any production that might stray from the original. I tend to pre-judge changes in R&H shows, but I saw Patrick in the Broadway version and liked him very much. Gabrielle was fine, too. The overall production was wonderful. I had the London CD at that time, and sensed a great energy in "Curly", especially in the reprise of "People Will Say We're In Love." The Actor's Studio appearance was the clincher when it came to my appreciation of this "Wolverine guy".
I had also seen the Lincoln Center revival of CAROUSEL on tour at the Ahmanson here in LA, and thought Patrick Wilson was wonderful as "Billy". He has a great voice and is very cute, but for some reason has not been able to reach star status, even in a brief TV series he starred in.

Kathy, Patrick has become more identified with horror movies ( The Conjuring/Insiduous, etc) and people ask why he has not returned to Broadway once in a while. Wasn't the Region 1 DVD/VHS of the RNT OKLAHOMA! released when TBFO officially opened on Broadway? When did you realize that there was a filmed production of that revival? I saw the show in London but did not get the DVD/VHS until much later. What I regret was missing the Jackman/McDonald Carousel concert at Carnegie Hall -- I did make a trip to the USA during that year ( 2002) but did not do it until early fall, instead of June. Thank goodness for bootlegs Hugh is so busy -- but wouldn't it have been nice if he appeared in repertory for revivals of the more well-known R&H classics? Wishful thinking on my part -- but he would make even a good King of Siam ...And a stern Captain Von Trapp...or a romantic Emile de Becque...although he might be a bit old for Prince Charming Jo

My very first trip to NYC was for the Richard Rodgers Centennial Celebration...That's when I saw the Broadway version of the RNT OKLAHOMA! Sadly, I could not see the Carnegie Hall CAROUSEL because school was still in session here and I was working. Yes, thank goodness for the BL. Hopefully, Hugh will do some of the classic musicals you have listed, but I'm not holding my breath. It's also getting harder for me to travel to NYC, both physically and financially. Since I'm a natural "Cockeyed Optimist", I won't rule anything out!

Jo I just looked at my DVD and it was released in 2003. I wasn't aware of the London Production until then, I don't think. Well, we probably talked about it on the old forum, but I never saw it until 2003. Nancy

The Region 2 DVD was released much earlier in the UK ( the show ended its run in 1999 although the filming was done on a sound stage in early winter in 1998, while they awaited transfer to another theatre), but it was released in Region 1 format as part of the promotion for The Boy From Oz which officially opened in Broadway in November 2003. They released the original cast recording earlier than the release of the DVD - I used to listen to it everytime ( but nothing beats seeing Hugh act out the role of Curly) After I had seen the show in London, I waited for this actor to make a comeback at the West End. I did not know that he went further west -- to Hollywood Jo

Yeah, I saw that and didn't bother registering. Would have preferred more/different selections.

I was channel surfing and came upon the start of the episode of SUPERNATURAL 10 - my ears caught the name of Hugh Jackman, etc... Upon searching - I chanced upon the episode and found the Hugh mention

Speaking of OKLAHOMA!, when he was on ELLEN last week, he mentioned his problems pronouncing the word "murderer" in a scene with John Travolta (alluding to SWORDFISH). But Hugh seems to have forgotten that he previously spoke that word every night during the London run of OKLAHOMA! and in the version taped for PBS. Remember that snippet of dialogue in his smokehouse chat with surly Jud: "Kind of a murderer, too." Interesting that I noticed his murky pronunciation of that word when I first saw it on TV, not too long after my first trip to the Imperial to TBFO. Of course, by then I would forgive him anything. When you think of it -- Hugh's portrayal of Curly is quite impressive, in terms of accents.
He came fresh from Australia when he was cast in Oklahoma! ( and most likely spoke in his native accent for Erskineville Kings, Paperback Hero, Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard). The OKLAHOMA! revival was under the auspices of THE ROYAL NATIONAL THEATRE in London and directed by prominent British director Trevor Nunn. Save for Shuler Hensley and the actress who portrayed Ado Annie who are both Americans, everyone who worked with Hugh was likely British.
And the role of Curly could not be more American - and while he probably did not speak the right Okie accent all the time, there was not much criticism about how he handled it.

Will they ever work together on stage again...especially in a classical play by the Bard?

Maybe after he ties up his current commitments, he might be able to squeeze in a limited run someplace, either NY or London (he's been promising to perform in London for some time now).
Hey, by that time, he'll probably be ready for KING LEAR, LOL.

These photos were around the time of the inauguration of FOX Studios in Sydney ( November 1999...The RNT stage production completed its London run months earlier and Hugh was probably already filming his first XMen movie ). Hugh is shown with the original Laurey from the film adaptation of OKLAHOMA!, Shirley Jones. Cate Blanchett is also in the photos. I used to have a tape of the actual ceremonies which showed Hugh and Shirley singing PEOPLE WILL SAY WE'RE IN LOVE! And that must have been one of the first hosting jobs for Hugh -- Jo

On July 15, 1998, The Royal National Theatre opened its revival of the American landmark musical! Tomorrow, the show which introduced Hugh Jackman to international audiences, will commemorate its 18th anniversary! To celebrate the occasion, here is the show's famous OVERTURE -- This was the show which changed the professional future of Hugh Jackman. Among those who saw him in the show were XMen producer Lauren Shuler Donner, Harvey Weinstein, and his longtime agent and friend Patrick Whitesell. By the time the show had closed a year later, Hugh was close to joining an action movie which would be called simply "XMen"! I wonder if Hugh is also thinking about those days now while he is filming his farewell WOLVERINE movie Jo

This is also the first R&H show which changed Musical Theater forever on March 31, 1943. My love of Rodgers & Hammerstein fed my interest in the London production which starred Hugh Jackman. Some of my friends said, "That's Wolverine." I rented the XMen video. This "Wolverine" guy played "Curly"? O.K., he did have screen presence. Finally, the video of OKLAHOMA! became available. A movie star that could do musical theater. Enough for me!

And it is quite a coincidence that two milestones in Hugh's career are marked only a day after each other!
OKLAHOMA! opened in London on July 15, 1998!
XMEN opened in the USA on July 14, 2000!
Also, a coincidence that two important genres in his career are now being filmed in 2016. His farewell Wolverine movie is now filming. Greatest Showman will follow thereafter.

And it seems NYTimes critic Ben Brantley was also there -- his review is summarized by someone else, thus: It seems Mr. Brantley and myself became fans of Hugh Jackman at about the same time...although I probably saw the London production many months later than he did Jo
