Director Neill Blomkamp and stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley discuss artificial intelligence and science fiction.



Director Neill Blomkamp is no stranger to science fiction. His breakout film, 2009's "District 9," was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It essentially boosted Blomkamp from his Indie short film roots and pushed him to the forefront. Four years later, he released "Elysium," another sci-fi installment with familiar themes of oppression. Similarly, his upcoming film "Chappie" is set in a very near future where a robotic police force has decreased crime significantly. When one of the droids gains consciousness--the ability to think and feel for itself--a villainous engineer goes to great lengths to stop it. We were able to hear from Blomkamp and stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley at a recent press conference where the quartet discussed artificial intelligence, the South African setting, science fiction films and Hugh Jackman's accent.


Blomkamp said his view of artificial intelligence changed over the course of filming "Chappie." "I'm not actually completely sure that humans will be capable of giving birth to A.I., at least not in the way that films fictionalize it," he said. "We don't know why we're here, we don't know how consciousness is created and we don't know the nature of consciousness." Later, though, he was optimistic about the prospect of a robot with consciousness ever benefitting society. "There's a lot of evidence in evolutionary sciences that show that altruism and acting in ways that are empathetic to others are actually beneficial on an evolutionary basis. So this whole notion that the robot has to declare nuclear war is one part of the discussion but it may not be reality. The reality is that maybe it can emphasize to a far greater degree than we can and experience a wider range of emotions."

Copley, who portrays the titular robotic character through motion capture, was a tad more hesitant when it came to whether or not he'd like his own personal robot. "I would just like mine not to kill me," he joked. "If it realized it was a superior being I would be a little nervous. I don't think it's a case of you could tell it to do the dishes. It's a different kind of robot." However, the actor did have fun capturing the character, and acknowledged the special effects department as the "real unsung heroes."


As mentioned, "Chappie" addresses familiar themes seen in Blomkamp's past films. But despite the similar setting to "District 9," the director wanted "Chappie" to be its own entity. Die Antwoord, a South African rap group featured prominently in the film, was essential to Blomkamp's planning of the setting. He said a test draft of the film was written in North America, but because the group would have felt like a "fish out of water" there, he decided to set the film, again, in South Africa, despite it being a revisit of "District 9's" familiar territory. "I still wanted to Americanize the film as much as I could, on purpose. I wanted to go away from 'District 9' and not delve into the very South African themes you can get into easily in South Africa." Blomkamp cited many little things in the film that help do that, such as incorporating Jose Pablo Cantillo, an American actor, into Die Antwoord's on-screen gang.


Weaver, also no stranger to sci-fi, plays the CEO of the company manufacturing the robot enforcers. On how "Chappie" compared to filming her other sci-fi films, she was passionate about Blomkamp's vision. "Sometimes people think of sci-fi as being film-light. And Neill's films always have an underpinning of something that's actually very important for us all to discuss and to think about," she said. "The movie has so much to say to us in terms of what is it to be human and in a sense that word human is a hard word to define now because there's so many inhumane acts in the film perpetrated by humans, not by robots."

Finally, in case you were wondering, Hugh Jackman does sport his Australian accent throughout the film and apparently, even that took some research. "It's kind of embarrassing because you'd think those sayings should be at the top of my head, I kind of looked up Australian slang and most of the ones that are in there actually came from Neill. Neill Googled it as well," he said. "I love the idea of people being themselves in films," added Blomkamp.

"Chappie" comes to theaters on March 6.

Arghh...so Hugh's accent is based on 'Strine -LOL! But what Neill saying about "the idea of people being themselves in films" -- he obviously has not seen many of Hugh's media sessions. Does he know Hugh went to a posh school (Knox) and has two degrees ( one in communications and another in drama) and that he was raised in a semi-English household. Hope the dialogs are not too much of a caricature

While I'm not the big cheerleader of Neill Blomkamp so many others are, I will commend him for the fact he makes the movies he wants to make and he's not making test audience-approved, PG-13 material and while I have zero interest in seeing Chappie, kudos once again for giving us another R-rated film where in the hands of others it would most likely be a soft lob down the middle, PG-13 waste...

Chappie Is Going To Be Way More Hardcore Than We Thought

When the first footage for the upcoming new film from Neill Blomkamp, Chappie, was unveiled, it seemed that the director, best known for deep, R-rated science fiction thrillers had turned a stylistic page, moving on to what seems to be a comedic crowd-pleaser about a lovable robot that gains self-awareness and learns about life with a child-like innocence. Well, seeing as the MPAA just dealt the film an R-rating, it appears that our expectations about any family-friendly turns were wrong. However, the reason that has been given for that rating is even more vexing.

The film’s head-scratching rating can be viewed on Box Office Mojo’s release schedule for everyone to wonder at in awe. What could possibly be the reason for such hard turn for a film that is basically about a futuristic Pinocchio? Well, apparently it’s due to:

violence, language and brief nudity.

… Let’s backtrack a bit. Let me describe in as much detail as feasibly possible exactly WHAT movie - which features the impeccable cast of Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel and Sharlto Copley (who performs motion-capture for the titular robot) - just received an R-rating. After this description is done, it will be apparent how surreal it is that, amongst other seemingly anachronistic things for a film like this, that the culprit for its rating is NUDITY.

Chappie is a film from District 9 and Elysium director, Neill Blomkamp set in the near future in which an army of self-thinking and analyzing robotic policeman have been unleashed upon Johannesburg to uphold the law in an objective way- unclouded by the inter-personal conflict that comes with a human police force. However, one of them, dubbed "Chappie," gains sentience and begins an odyssey of curiosity meant to make us hardened jaded moviegoers feel good about life and remember to be grateful for the fundamentals. Chappie’s essentially a child, who watches He-Man cartoons and spends his time painting and reading. He’s a lovable hunk of talking tin with bunny ears who starts a friendship with a young girl and some other colorfully eccentric street kids and begins every sentence in the third person. It makes one wonder exactly what nude scene could possibly be so critical to the film that Blomkamp felt had to be kept in, even to the film's possible financial detriment?



The trailer makes every indication that this is a life-affirmer, laced with maybe a hint of Blomkamp-esque in-your-face action mixed with just enough political agitprop not to be seen as pretentious. However, it clearly looked like the kind of film that people might want to bring their kids to see. As we have learned with this recent revelation, Chappie the lovable robot who comes to life and befriends cute, cyberpunky street urchins will share the same MPAA rating as Fifty Shades of Grey and will do so for roughly the SAME REASON. Is this self-sabotage? Or a bold move betting that the 17 and over crowd are going to be stoked for something that, given a name change, could pass as an edgier, modernized reboot of Short Circuit?

We shall certainly get the answer when Chappie makes its way to theaters on March 6th.

Yeah they are embargoed until close to release. I can't wait to read some, im really curious if die Antwoord will be accepted.

An R-rated sci-fi movie that was initially pitched as a comedy (though the trailers show that might not be the case), featuring South African hip hop duo Die Antwoord, "Slumdog Millionaire" nerd Dev Patel, "Alien" survivor Sigourney Weaver and "The Wolverine" himself Hugh Jackman? Certainly, whatever Neill Blomkamp is cooking up, it's going to be distinctly his own. And today a few more peeks have arrived for the film.

A few TV spots continue the buzz for the flick about the titular piece of artificial intelligence who becomes embroiled in political battle with the fate of humanity getting tossed into the mix. Thematically, it looks like Blomkamp's film will wrestle with the notion of what happens when machines replicate the intelligence and instincts of humans. But never fear, there will also be explosions.

It has a worldwide release schedule, including Chinese speaking countries or cities ( Taiwan, Hongkong), other parts of Southeast Asia which have large Chinese populations...but the release in China has not been announced, if ever.

Jo, as per your question, Hugh did indeed chop veggies in THE RIVER with his right hand. He seems to do certain things, such as writing, with his left, but other activities with his right. But he appears to be primarily a southpaw.
