Emma Stone is on a roll.

Fresh off her Oscar win for La La Land, the 28-year-old actress will likely be back at the big show next year—and not just to present like winners do the following year after their win.

Stone is already being touted as a best actress nominee for her work as tennis legend Billie Jean King in the upcoming sports drama Battle of the Sexes. The film, directed by Little Miss Sunshine duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, tells the story of the 1973 televised match between King and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) while also following King as she comes to terms with being a lesbian.

With Stone at the top of the list, I'm taking a look at some other possible contenders you could be seeing at the Oscars in 2018.


Jennifer Lawrence not only found love on the set of mother! with her director Darren Aronofsky, but she could pick up her fifth Oscar nomination for her work in the drama that, according to IMDb, "centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence."

Director Alexander Payne's latest Oscar buzzy film is Downsizing, a sci-fi comedy about a married couple (Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig) who decide to have themselves shrunk down. Payne has directed many of his stars to Oscar noms, so expect to see Damon walking the red carpet again.

One of the most talked about movies to come out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year was Call Me By Your Name, a love story about a young man (Armie Hammer) who falls in love with his professor's teenage son (Timothée Chalamet). Will it be next year's Moonlight? If it is, here's hoping there's not another best picture mix-up.


Speaking of Sundance, look for Crown Heights to shine next award season after picking up the audience award last month at the festival. The true story about a man who spent 20 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit stars Atlanta's Lakeith Stanfield and NFL-player-turned-actor Nnamdi Asomugha.

Mudbound was also a Sundance hit. The Civil War era drama could translate into Oscar love for Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell as well as director Dee Rees.

Salma Hayek stars in Beatriz at Dinner as a Mexican immigrant who works as a health practitioner who unexpectedly finds herself at a dinner party hosted by one of her very wealthy real estate mogul clients (Donald Trump John Lithgow). The film earned rave reviews at Sundance and was written and directed by the same duo (Mike White and Miguel Arteta) behind Chuck & Buck.



Hugh Jackman has proven to be one of the Oscars' best hosts. Wouldn't it be great if he not only hosted next year, but was also a nominee? There are high expectations for The Greatest Showman with Oscar hopes flying for Jackman for his work in the movie musical as circus impresario P.T. Barnum and Michelle Williams for her portrayal of his wife Charity Barnum.


The animated Beauty and the Beast received five Oscar nominations back in 1992 (it won two—best original score and best original song for the now iconic title track). Will the new live-action with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the title roles be as successful? It sure looks like it.

The movie is still filming so nothing much can be said about the film itself. It definitely has a strong cast and creative team! Oscar nominees Jackman and Williams, Oscar winners Pasek&Paul and Arndt!

I watched the Oscars delayed about 45 minutes on my DVR and I rewound it to watch the screw-up again. The envelope appeared to be the same one handed to the La La Land guy. Were there 2 envelopes in play? The one they (Beatty and Dunaway) handed the guy was the one the show producer grabbed, looked at, returned to him, then the guy held it up to the camera to show it said Moonlight. I think maybe Beatty tried to take the fall for Faye Dunaway. Very confusing!

The accountants screwed up.

If they had been given what was obviously a wrong envelope, Beatty and Dunaway should have been more aware and not read the wrong results -- if it said "EMMA STONE - Lalaland" -- that was obviously the wrong tabulation results. No offense meant to anyone -- but maybe, just maybe, next time younger actors whose mental reflexes are sharper and faster should be asked to do the job?  Warren and Faye could have paused and said, with aplomb, this looks like the wrong envelope!  And then proceeded to ask for the right one!  Then that would have been dramatic and caused no one any embarssment!

Btw, the two accountants have been fired from doing this job ( which I understand they have been doing the last 4 years) by AMPAS!

I don't know why there is such a big issue -- it was immediately corrected and the right explanation was given, that the two presenters were handed obviously the wrong envelope. Such a cause celebre! Much ado about nothing

Maybe it was the embarrassment to Lalaland -- for starting to do their speeches when it happened -- but it was actually a producer of LALALAND who actually acknowledged the mistake and graciously handed the Oscar statuette to the MOONLIGHT people. I thought it was such a generous gesture!

To me, the most serious offense which would be unforgiveable would be if Price Waterhouse tabulated and reported the WRONG results!

Of course, like what happened to the Philippines's Miss Universe who was also momentarily "robbed" by Steve Harvey of her moment ( but she did say that she became the most "popular" Miss Universe by accident) -- maybe it is MOONLIGHT which will be the ultimate beneficiary -- as people will either be curious or more sympathetic with the little known movie and see it at the cinemas.

As a suggestion to the producers -- why not have an auditor each for each carrier of the envelopes to check the envelope's content before it is handed to the presenters. Maybe someone from the AMPAS itself?

Former Oscar host Hugh Jackman calls Best Picture flub "shocking"

Disney/ABC Home Entertainment and TV Distribution/David M. Russell(NEW YORK) -- While promoting his latest film Logan on Live with Kelly, former Academy Awards host Hugh Jackman weighed in briefly on the flub last weekend that led to La La Land mistakenly being announced as Best Picture.

Jackman explained to Kelly Ripa and her guest co-host Jerry O'Connell that he was in Taipei conducting interviews for Logan while the Oscar telecast was going on.

"I saw the opening, thought it was great. Loved Justin [Timberlake]. I thought Jimmy [Kimmel] did a great job," he said to applause, adding, it, "looked like it was his fifth time around."

Jackman said at that point, he was called away for interviews, until his assistant made an excuse so he could catch the Best Picture announcement.

"I went in, literally, that whole moment happens, La La Land wins, Mark Platt, producer of that, he's a friend of mine, I'm watching Mark, I'm like [clapping] 'Ah, good on ya, Mark!'...So I go back into interviews, three minutes later, [my assistant] comes in, and goes, 'You'll never guess!' And I'm like, 'Yeah, whatever.' It took her a good three minutes to convince me it happened! I mean, It's just so shocking, you know?"


As for Logan, Jackman admitted he's emotional about his final go 'round as the razor-clawed X-Men hero he's played for the past 17 years. The movie's premiere in China brought a massive crowd -- and brought home the point to him.

He explained, "People were saying goodbye...people were crying. It's like, 'It's OK, I'll be back here -- I'm doing a movie called The Greatest Showman, I'll be back here in six months." 

"It was kind of amazing...I did take a note to myself to say, 'Remember this, because you may not experience something like this again.'"

Logan, which also stars Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, and Eriq LaSalle, opens Friday. 

So, he is hoping that THE GREATEST SHOWMAN will also see a premiere in China ...But he can't count -- that film is 10 months away - LOL!

Mostly about LOGAN... but at around 10'10", he is asked about his other project

Hugh says it is the most interesting time in his life, with LOGAN and SHOWMAN both being "passion pieces" and that "never in a million years did I think they would go back to back". He said he was dancing ( in the UK) the other day presumably for continued rehearsals... and that he is doing "hat tricks and cane tricks and dancing" in the movie. He says there was no dancing in Les Mis at all!

*He is supposed to be the Ringmaster -- will that require dealing with real animals ( if any?)?

This is why I have always thought NYC was a better location filming choice than Australia ( maybe Melbourne, as maybe they would have similar architecture and arts involvement) -- because there is greater abundance of infrastructure that evoke two centuries ago...plus the acting community and creatives talent is so much broader and deeper in NYC ( stage, film, TV talent...and creatives for directing, choreography, etc). One of Australia's strengths would be technology ( CGIs and special effects) but Michael Gracey already has the extensive experience with Special effects so that could be applied to the local New York available talent.
