I don't get it why they have to change the release date. December 25 is a perfect date cause TGS won't have to compete with any big movie. I don't like the idea of them moving it on 20 because:
1. Its up against Jumanji
2. Its near on the release date of Star Wars and Pitch Perfect
In that case, Fox better make sure they have a good PR/marketing strategy for the film because if they are campaigning this to the Oscars, it needs to be a huge box office success like La La Land did.
I'm still upset they changed the release date arrghhhh December 25 was already a perfect release date đ˘

Jumanji's PR/marketing of the film is already starting. They have a trailer 2 whereas TGS didn't release a second trailer yet. And The Rock recently went to some convention promoting the film. In my opinion, TGS should start promoting their film now cause Jumanji is getting more publicity than TGS

An article by the Wall Street Journal has been posted on the topic Off-Topic: UNDERSTANDING THE FILM BUSINESS re the very onerous terms being imposed by Disney to theatre exhibitors re the release of STAR WARS:Last Jedi.
I wonder if the strategy of FOX of moving up the release date of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN has anything to do with this conflict between greedy Disney and the theatre exhibitors? Maybe to give the theatre exhibitors more selection options??

Agreed. It also makes it seem less of an "event" release...splashy premiere and (in my opinion) weird perfume tie-ins aside. Maybe since Christmas falls on a Monday Fox wanted to capitalize on more weekend revenue. I don't get it why they have to change the release date. I wonder if the strategy of FOX of moving up the release date of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN has anything to do with this conflict between greedy Disney and the theatre exhibitors? Maybe to give the theatre exhibitors more selection options?? Excerpts : Jo Of course theatre exhibitors are not happy. They are also concerned because the summer has not yielded blockbuster results they expected...but these terms may make it difficult for exhibitors ( especially the small ones with limited markets -- such as in smaller communities) to make any money. I can understand why studios ( like Fox and the one releasing Jumanji) are not also happy because of the 4-week minimum screening for Star Wars... My point is --was the decision of FOX to move up the screening of Showman 5 days ahead made --*To give exhibitors more options, rather than just sticking to Star Wars ( they will have to compute their profit take in either choice)? Maybe it enhances the profitability for theater exhibitors ( who may opt out of Star Wars because of the very thin profit margins that the onerous terms afford them?) of a Showman option in particular because of the added number of screening days during the holiday season? And to its advantage, SHOWMAN is a movie that seems a sure-fit for holiday season entertainment! It is a musical! It is a new take on how musicals are envisioned to suit more contemporary tastes! The early release of the musical score ( advance release of 2 tracks on 10/27 and the full soundtrack on 12/8) can only likely result in a wider awareness of the movie musical!
*At least, adding 5 days earlier (instead of at the tail-end) may help FOX's box office take better... because Disney is forcing theaters anyway to keep Star Wars for a whole month from Dec 15? By the time of the New Year... in the early weeks of January, maybe movie theaters tend to be less full because that is the start of deep winter in many cases...so adding 5 days earlier rather than later in Showman's screening schedule may make more business sense. But FOX will now have to go FULL/FULL/FULL BLAST on their publicity barrage now -- to put SHOWMAN to closer footing in terms of public awareness to STAR WARS! If my speculation is true -- then this is what makes sense of the corporate move of FOX to release SHOWMAN at an earlier holiday season date!Btw -- the 150-or-so responses to the WSJ article practically all decry what Disney is trying to do - that it is all about GREED! Of course WSJ readers are probably not representative of filmgoers who will watch STAR WARS, no matter the quality of the film Jo

Re SHOWMAN having an "event" expectations -- my definition of "EVENT" being the same as " TENTPOLE" ( no pun intended with the circus theme of the movie) or "BLOCKBUSTER". LOL - I am more realistic...even if I would like to be strongly optimistic *This is not LOGAN or other franchise movies, which seem to be the movies that qualify for that term *This is a movie musical -- still a genre that is considered RISKY (even by Hugh himself) by risk-averse major studios and even large indie houses! We do not know publicly the ( likely difficult) process that it took the film project to get a GREENLIGHT! We do not know what kind of Production Budget the project was entrusted with ( I am sure it could only be smaller than the R-rated LOGAN, which already reported a pay cut for Hugh Jackman). *It took 8 years from original launch ( August 2009) to December 2017 to get the movie released. I doubt that people consider it the next AVATAR 2/3/4/ in terms of box office expectations even if they may share the very long gestation periods. *If you notice, SHOWMAN is not being released on a day-date basis ( practically the same day...or even a few days ahead... as the USA all over the world). That is the true mark of an EVENT movie, I am afraid. The UK will only get to see it on January 1, 2018. We get to see it here in Manila only on January 24 ( same day as France)...and Japan only gets to see it on February 16 ( Les Mis opened in Japan on the same day as the world ... because their theatre exhibitor was an uber-fan of the musical. We are hoping for a China release -- main reason is that part of the funding comes from a company with a major Chinese business investor) but as always, we do not know if and when that may happen. www.imdb.com/title/tt1485796/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dtList not completely updatedIts strengths and appeal may hopefully catapult it into blockbuster territory -- boosted by superb publicity ( and maybe aided by the early release of the soundtrack) -- but I remain somewhat cautious, no matter how optimistic my earlier posts may sound Also, it will likely be the younger demos ( the ones who are chosen for test screenings ) which will put it into event territory during the release period! If they approve because they like the "contemporary prism" applied to this movie -- then we would have a very good chance for box office glory I hope it does become a tentpole and a blockbuster and an event Jo

It seems like Fox is investing so much money for the promos

Zendaya and Michelle were September-born; Hugh, Zac and Rebecca celebrated birthdays in October; and Keala's birthday is today! It must be fate -- that a group of very talented people, born not too far apart in birth-months, are cast as the Greatest Showmen in THE GREATEST SHOW Jo

We looked forward to the movie THE GREATEST SHOWMAN as another celebration of song and dance... and acting!
It was not envisioned by musicals fans that it would also be a source of real-life inspiration!

Hugh - Emile d Becque Michelle - Nellie Forbush Zac Efron - Lt. Joseph Cable Zendaya - Liat Keala - Bloody Mary And maybe Rebecca -- a female enterprising WAC ( Women's Army Corps) Lorna Billis Jo

Okay -- there is now an ongoing war between a major bloc of the movie press/film critics and Disney -- that could result in non-coverage of STAR WARS reviews and awards consideration until the ban imposed by Disney on the LA Times re allowing them access to advance screenings is lifted. Such ban arose from an article published by LA Times re Disney's performance as a good corporate citizen at its home base in Anaheim. hollywood-elsewhere.com/This...plus the report of onerous terms to theater exhibitors re the release of STAR WARS makes me shudder at the thought of Disney acquiring Fox Studios! Evil Empire -- as someone suggested STAR WARS is released on Dec 15 ( including requirements on theaters to give it the largest cinema and to screen for at least 4 weeks) ... while Showman will open on Dec 20. Will the negative publicity on Disney affect its box office results to a very minor extent? If movie fans are expected to boycott any movies connected to sexual harassment issues, will bad corporate behavior result in some audience negative reaction?? Hmmm...

So many similar sentiments being expressed!
Refreshing in a climate where many famous people from many sectors have NOW disappointed the people because of their lack of moral code.

Uh-oh...*gossip emoji* That looks like a very suggestive pose between Jenny Lind and P.T. Barnum How could you, Phineas Taylor Barnum ?? Is this part of the dramatic conflicts in the movie?? We need that - to make it more interesting and awards-worthy Jo

Hmm... were there clouds in the marriage of PT and Charity Barnum?
I have wondered why the second to the last song in the soundrack album to be sung by Michelle Williams (Charity) is called TIGHTROPE?
Is this part of the dramatic climax?

They seem to be drinking some champagne -- I couldn't figure out what Hugh/Barnum was holding on his hand in the earlier photo ( a little too hazy). It's easier to spot it in Rebecca/Jenny' s hand. It's a champagne flute ... and that seems like a bottle of champagne on the side table They must be celebrating something! Or Jenny has expensive tastes Jo
