At the red carpet for AFTER MIDNIGHT -- Hugh must have been there to support the director/choreographer of the show Warren Carlyle ( Back on Broadway/Oklahoma!). Jo

I read that "wouldn't it be great?" quote with interest but skepticism. The show -- at least pre-reviews -- has not been selling especially well. Carlyle could be offering a tease to promote interest and sales. But it would certainly be a nice way for Hugh to keep limber and in training for HOUDINI, hmmm? This bears watching.

I wonder - will they include Hugh's tweet among the reviews Jo

They probably should. BOOK OF MORMON ads quoted celebs' views, including those of Jon Stewart and Jimmy Fallon.
The good reviews seem to have had an immediate effect: it's already off TDF.

A last-minute decision to take the day off to rush a couple of shows resulted in my chatting with Hugh at intermission of a matinee of TWELFTH NIGHT. Talk about random!
I had a stage seat and spotted Hugh being escorted down to his (what else?) house seats on the center aisle. I saw him looking around so waved to him. He saw me, smiled and waved back. He attended with his business partner/friend Barry, to whom I was introduced during our intermission chat. Hugh wanted to know about the stage seats and we agreed that this production was fabulous. (Loved, loved Mark Rylance, Stephen Fry and co.)
The. back-to-seats bell sounded or else I might have asked him about DROWSY or HOUDINI.
Got some hello and goodbye kisses, including one at the stage door when Hugh exited with Laura Linney, who had also attended. I also ran into Margie at the theater.
I highly recommend this TWELFTH NIGHT. It's hilarious.
Tonight I saw three of Hugh's co-stars (Stewart, NcKellen and Hensley) in Harold Pinter's enigmatic NO MAN'S LAND. I found it maybe just a little too enigmatic for its own good, but the performances were first rate
All in all, a pretty good day.

Ellen -- Not only am I terribly envious of your getting another chance to say Hello to co-theatre fan, Hugh Jackman smiley-hug006 but about your constant access to all those theatre shows! Also, having read so much about Mark Rylance, that's another level of envy! Here's the latest tweet from Hugh -- In our future fantasy wishes - will Hugh ever have a chance to do classical theatre?? Comedy or drama? Jo

Catching BIG FISH before the show closes -- It looks like this tweeter was at the same performance -- Friends Geoffrey Rush and Anna Wintour were there, too -- Is Geoffrey Rush a resident of NYC...or I wonder if he is putting together the film musical project THE DROWSY CHAPERONE now...and persuading Hugh why he would be a convincing Aldolpho

He's making the theater rounds before heading off to Oz, isn't he? (See, Carol--if BIG FISH is good enough for Hugh....) Looks like Stephanie Block was there, too. I wonder if Hugh and Geoffrey Rush discussed DROWSY? Aldolpho, here you come. (I hope.) Ellen

Hugh's twtr review -- With the cast -- I've just remembered -- Hugh and Norbert Leo Butz sang together in the Carnegie Hall CAROUSEL concert in 2002 (11 years ago!). NLB sang the role of Jigger to Hugh's Billy Bigelow. Jo

Fellow Aussies Hugh Jackman and Geoffrey Rush - what could they have been talking about Comparing their film adaptations of LES MISERABLES? How Russell fared against Geoffrey's interpretation of Javert? Or Hugh's Valjean vis a vis Liam Neeson's take? Could be interesting conversations Or maybe switch roles in DROWSY CHAPERONE - lol! It is not a singing role but Hugh could try his hand at comedy...and play the theatre fanatic ( Man in Chair) that he really is Jo

I was fascinated by Bob Martin's Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for DROWSY. He was very effective, but I wondered: Was that the first time someone was nominated in that category for a non-singing role? That bears researching. Was Boyd Gaines nominated for CONTACT? I'll have to dig around.
Edit: Just checked. Gaines was nom'd for Best Featured Actor. Aha!

In the meantime ( reposted from the Wall Street Journal Jackman interview) -- Aha, so there is a possible straight play that may just come as a surprise! Maybe he is just waiting to firm up his HOUDINI schedule before he commits to a play ( maybe a limited engagement show, such as A Steady Rain)! I wonder if this is going to open in time for the TONY nomination deadline ( end-April) and ends at TONY time? He's obviously been getting itchy feet for the stage again Ellen - have you heard of any new play or a major revival -- for a limited engagement -- that may have been listed as prospective season-ending opener?? Arghh -- now we have to plan for a back-to-back trip to Broadway ( the play and Houdini, maybe a year apart?) smiley-excited001 Jo

Among those items "in the works," as listed on Playbill.com, are these: A RAISIN IN THE SUN--I think we can safely eliminate that one --; CASA VALENTINA (a gay-themed comedy-drama from Harvey Fierstein, probably not a likely vehicle for Hugh); a stage version of the classic Hitchcock thriller REAR WINDOW (hmmm, I could see that); revivals of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU (he'd be great in those light comedies); a revival of A FEW GOOD MEN (an Aaron Sorkin connection); and a new play by noted playwright Jon Robin Baitz: LOVE AND MERCY. This one sounds intriguing and he'd be spot-on casting. It concerns a "matinee idol politician" and his family. Interesting possibility--or he could wind up in something totally off the radar. We'll have to wait and see. Ellen

Drowsy Chaperone sounds good. I'd definitely go see that - even if Hugh's not in it. (I think that's one of the shows I never got to see on stage due to the Stagehands' strike.) I recently read that The Princess Bride is heading to Broadway. More here: “Princess Bride” Broadway Show Will Be Inconceivably AmazingIt's never going to happen but, I'd love to see Hugh in the Mandy Patinkin role. "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."Even at "straight" concerts, Mandy jokes that he knows they came to hear that line from him, regardless of the singing. Hugh would be a riot, but I'll bet they go with much shorter actors... in deference to whomever plays the "giant" role.

I checked the link to Princess Bride. Did I read it wrong - but the Broadway adaptation seems to be headed as a musical theatre vehicle? Hugh did say that his other option ( which he cannot talk about, yet) is a play, not a stage musical. Plays encompass musicals, but most people will connect plays to straight dramas or comedies.
But William Goldman, who wrote the original screenplay, would be pleased if Hugh did have a role. He once compared Hugh to Brando and Merman when he saw THE BOY FROM OZ ten years ago.

Reposted from an article posted on "Wolverine:Publicity" re the release of the home video, but there was an interesting question posed re the issue of immortality being achieved if you are in the movies...and where he ends up discussing what makes him fulfilled as a performer --
A true theatre afficionado who feels the throb of involvement on both sides of the wall in a live performance!

I remember reading once that Hugh says that he starts really getting excited about a performance when he stands in the wings, summoning his full artistry and professional discipline, and waiting for the orchestral cue or the lights cue for the start of the show...
I smile when I think that while I would be sitting waiting -- as the lights dim, the hush descends on the audience, and there is a heartstopping moment before the baton of the musical director starts the show rolling... to think that Hugh could be in the wings savoring these same moments smiley-happy082

This Lincoln Center production is directed by Jack O'Brien ( who is attached to direct HOUDINI). Unfortunately this staging is not being raved about Ellen - I have never seen Jesse21 on ATC rant so much about a show <boo> ... Have you seen it? Jo

I've been avoiding that MACBETH since hearing nothing but negative comments from the outset. Was Hugh at another matinee?
As for that zippy tap session, it could be just a fun workout, or a rehearsal for...what? An Oscars ceremony appearance? An as-yet unannounced stint as guest performer at AFTER MIDNIGHT? But the guest star slot is filled until mid-March, so why would he be rehearsing now?
Lots to keep track of!
