On the cusp of 80, Paul McCartney is still our most charming rock god

As the 79-year-old pop legend sang his classic soft-rock ballad “Maybe I’m Amazed” on Friday night, giant screens at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium flashed old images of him cradling his newborn daughter Mary inside a shearling jacket. You know the photos, the most famous of which — snapped by his late wife Linda, about whom he wrote “Maybe I’m Amazed” — appeared on the back cover of McCartney’s homemade 1970 solo debut, when he’d retreated into the bosom of his family amid the Beatles’ painful breakup.

“That baby in my jacket’s now got four babies of her own,” he told the capacity crowd, itself a clear bastion of grandparenting, at the end of the song.

After more than half a century as one of music’s biggest acts, Sir Paul has an earnest charm that remains his superpower. It’s not that he lacks rock-star swagger. And “relatable” probably isn’t the word for a guy with more money than he could ever spend. But as an icon, what McCartney gets is that people crave art that makes magic from their everyday experiences.

They say it's your birthday! Happy Birthday to you!!!

Paul performed at Oriole Park at Camden Yards last Sunday as part of his "Got Back" tour. The last time he played Baltimore was 1964, and there were more than a few fans who had seen the Beatles then wearing "64" T-shirts. Somehow, the stormy weather which was forecast never materialized, and the audience serenaded him with "Happy Birthday" several times. He entertained the crowd for 2 hours and 40 minutes. Not bad for an almost - 80 year old.

It was great to see Jon Bon Jovi appear at the NJ concert to lead the audience in singing "Happy Birthday" to Paul. It was a wonderful way to close out the tour.

I was so busy I forgot to post this here yesterday. In Liverpool, Mathew St. (which is where the famous Cavern Club is located) was renamed for the day in honor of Paul’s 80th birthday on June 18th.

Sir Paul McCartney says artificial intelligence has enabled a 'final' Beatles song



Sir Paul McCartney says he has employed artificial intelligence to help create what he calls "the final Beatles record".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the technology had been used to "extricate" John Lennon's voice from an old demo so he could complete the song.

"We just finished it up and it'll be released this year," he explained.

Sir Paul did not name the song, but it is likely to be a 1978 Lennon composition called Now And Then.

It had already been considered as a possible "reunion song" for the Beatles in 1995, as they were compiling their career-spanning Anthology series.

Sir Paul had received the demo a year earlier from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. It was one of several songs on a cassette labelled "For Paul" that Lennon had made shortly before his death in 1980.

Do you remember their wacky Christmas albums? We used to laugh ourselves silly over them.

Of course! I was a member of the fan club the last few years it existed and received the original Christmas records. Then in 1970 when they broke up, the club sent out that (above) album free to all the members - I still have it!
This is at the Hard Day’s Night hotel in Liverpool. I stayed there in Aug. 2011 and Aug. 2016 during Beatleweek!
