The Beatles were, are, and always will be THE BEST R'n'R band ever ... IMHO.

Beatles Surprise With Rare 'Bootleg 1963' Release
The 59-song collection is now available on iTunes

The 59 rare songs capture the Beatles during a fruitful period, the year they released their debut album Please Please Me and With the Beatles. The harmonies are pristine and energetic, particularly on "A Taste of Honey" and "I Saw Her Standing There." During "From Me to You," the band abruptly stops recording and Paul McCartney says: "What happened? I just thought I heard you talking, actually." Lennon responds: "Did you whistle? Heard a whistle." After a bit of sarcastic whistling, McCartney demands, "Come on," and the band resumes. They can also be heard bickering briefly on an early version of "One After 909."

Available on iTunes - "for a limited time" - Just got this. Listening now. Some "alternate takes" are unnecessary, but I've always enjoyed the LIVE BBC performances. There are multiple versions of familiar oldies, a couple of tunes they never officially released, a couple of "covers" and quite a few incomplete out-takes. Looks like most of it is from 1963 - "on the cusp of world domination!" - it is enjoyably relaxed, easy-going and fun to hear.

I think you need more than a passing interest in the band to enjoy this. Just thought I'd pass the info along. It came as a surprise to me. I've collected some of the individual tracks over the years, but never had such a complete package. (Wish they'd release something like this from EACH year - but I'm not holding my breath.)

This was a GREAT band. No R'n'R group has ever enthralled me like these four guys. The harmonies are amazing (and even when they screw up occasionally I enjoy knowing they're "only human"). I think I'm gonna have this on for the rest of the day!

Sue, I don't know if that will be possible.

Early reports suggest that 2 hours and 29 minutes' worth of Beatles archive recordings appeared on iTunes sites in the early hours of Tuesday morning around the world before being taken down shortly afterwards. The staged release seems to have started in Asia, Australia and New Zealand with further reports of appearances in Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Lebanon. CNN reports that the recordings briefly surfaced at midnight in the UK. None of these iTunes sites currently host the tracks. If fans didn’t download them in that brief and unadvertised window, it is already too late.

When last I checked, it was still available here in the states. According to Apple, it is a "limited time only" release. There is no indication how long it will be available here. People in the U.K. are already protesting that it came and went so quickly (and in the middle of the night, no less), that few devoted, loyal, "original" fans managed to purchase it.

It is Vol. 1 of 3 to be released. It is the most complete, entertaining, error- and typo-free book about them that I've ever read! (and I have over 100 books about the Beatles!)I even learned a lot of new things that had not been published before! Mark researched over 10 years and he is still continuing and says he's got about 40% of Vol. 2 done.

In case you didn't know, the late night David Letterman show is filmed in the old Ed Sullivan theater - where The Beatles made their first "official" US appearance 50 (OMG - five-OH!!!) years ago this February. Rumors are flying that Ringo and Paul's current band will perform there together next month - at least that's the scuttlebutt from the Letterman camp.

I hope this turns out to be true. I know each of them has been on the show. I think they were even on together - but they did not play. Talk about a blast from the past. Really hope they do this.

I will set my DVR as I'll be in Cancun at 50th Anniversary/Ed Sullivan Show celebration. Lots of guests like Pete Best, Laurence Juber, Denny Seiwell and tribute band, Band On The Run!

Paul & Ringo will both be on the Grammys Jan. 26th, but will not perform together. However on the Special that is on Feb. 9th (taped Jan. 27th) they will perform together. I hope they do Sgt. Pepper and With A Little help from My Friends.

Dhani looked (played/sang) great. Sean was a bit too reminiscent of his mother's '60's look. Where was Julian? ...and Zak? Did anyone notice them (or Paul's kids) in the audience shots?

I can't say it's something I'd watch over and over again, but I hope they put out a CD - and include the performances that were cut from the broadcast.

Yes, I did! Watched it last night on my DVR & loved it. No other Beatle children there (except Kyoko, Yoko's daughter by Tony Cox, was there!)
This is what Julian had to say (why he wasn't there)

"It was all a bit much, and all a bit too shiny for me. [Laughs] Maybe that's not the preferred word, but it was all a bit too much for me. It was actually very difficult to even get a sense of...in all honesty, it was like trying to get blood from a stone in who was playing what, who was singing what, what went where and how. After a long chat with mum and a few other folks, I just said "You know, it's all a bit too much. I'd rather just stay out of it and wish everybody well and send my love."

It's an impossibility for there to be a reunion as such. I thought it was a bit weird that Ringo ended up playing a McCartney song more than anything else. I don't know. Paul McCartney will say a Fab farewell to Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

The Beatle has announced an Aug. 14 date at the former home of the 49ers . . . Tickets to Paul McCartney's Farewell to Candlestick: The Final Concert will go on sale at 10 a.m. May 5.

Candlestick holds a special place in Beatles history. The Fab Four played their last ticketed performance at the venue on Aug. 29, 1966 . . . The Candlestick farewell falls almost exactly 50 years to the day after the Beatles' first Bay Area show -- Aug. 19, 1964 at the nearby Cow Palace in Daly City.

The concept of a show at the Stick was born when McCartney played last year’s Outside Lands [which] reminded everyone of the Bay Area ties to the Beatles. McCartney and The Beatles performed their last paid gig at the Stick back on Aug. 29, 1966 with tickets running $4.50 to $6.50. Tickets for his August 14 "Farewell to Candlestick: The Final Concert" will surely be vastly more expensive but it is not very often one can see a rock legend at a venue slated for demolition.

I got tickets this way (Hot Sound Package) on Apr. 17th: Section 2, Row C, Seat 10 in Atlanta. Also includes early entrance at 4 pm, a special lanyard/laminate VIP tag, browse merchandise without a zillion people all over, a 1 hour and 15 minute Soundcheck (he plays complete songs--about 20 of them!), a vegetarian buffet dinner with 2 drinks (beer, wine, coke, whatever) a couple pieces of merchandise (in Memphis last year we got a nice backpack and a tote bag), then the seats are all rows 3-6. In Memphis I was in row D. (Sec. 2 is front & center!) So needless to say I'm psyched! And found out a woman I know only online at Paul's forum is sitting next to me!

I was just surfing around for an update on Paul's illness which caused him to cancel/postpone a set of concert dates in Japan. There's not much info other than "he's doing better" now.

Speaking of The Beatles, I'm at Abbey Road On The River Beatles festival in Louisville, KY right now and having a blast--so many good groups playing. The headliner show is The Beach Boys and John Sebastian (Loving Spoonful)

"The Night That Changed America--The Grammy Salute To The Beatles" was nominated for 6 Emmys, including Best Musical/Variety Special!!

Oh, and Paul got an intestinal virus in Japan in late May, had to be hospitalized, and had to cancel all his Japanese & South Korea shows, then he postponed all his June shows to Oct., so I won't see him until Oct. 15th (in Atlanta) He went back on tour July 5th in Albany and is back to his energetic self!

I'm SO jealous! It's been a decade since I've seen him on stage. He puts on quite a show! Please tell us more.

He was fabulous (of course!) Seemed a little subdued during the soundcheck, but the concert was fine. There is a smaller stage in front of the main stage that he gets on and it raises way up high. He sings Blackbird and Here Today (his song for John Lennon) from that stage. He was so close to me there!
