Wonderful news I was half-expecting, maybe half-fantasizing, the news since he announced he was returning to Broadway. It is going to be like a calling card for his return with THE RIVER. I have only been once ( 2005) -- and will likely not be able to go ever again -- but I loved the experience. It was not just because Hugh was hosting, but there was a great sense of community in that vast hall! Everyone was cheering for every performer/nominee, no matter who their favorites were. If I remember right, the tickets for the general audiences go on sale on the same day that the nominees are announced. I do not know if there are still special packages supported by companies like VISA. Is it still black tie? Okay -- what songs do you think he will sing?? smiley-cool13 Jo

He would still be likely in the middle of filming PAN in the UK during that time...and wearing Blackbeard's infamous facial hair - LOL!
And that is also going to be during the theatrical run of XMEN:DAYS OF FUTURE PAST ( Opening May 23, 2014) emoticon-cartoon-023
Too many sides to his famous performing persona smiley-happy036

It's amazing how the news has travelled fast -- it is on so many online sites! Not just on theatre-related sites but on many pop culture sites, too. Add film sites, too ( Hollywood Reporter, Kris Tapley's HitFix, GoldDerby, Hollywood.com, Deadline.com, all busy talking about the Oscars these days!). I guess that was why the TONYs people are ecstatic -- Hugh brings in loads and loads of publicity smiley-happy036 www.people.com/people/article/0,,20785893,00.html PS : Hugh is his own publicity machine ( via social media) - LOL! The official press releases have to play catch-up Jo

"Second to none" is right--and that includes Mr. Harris, who will probably be nominated for HEDWIG. Is it nasty of me to hope he doesn't win? Actually, if they're nominated, I'm hoping either Jefferson Mays (A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE) or Steven Pasquale (BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY) wins.
I wonder if Hugh will seek or be accorded co-producer status, as Harris has been in the past.

LOL - I saw a feedback comment on Deadline.com ( the news about Hugh being the next TONYs host was reported there)saying NPH is better than Hugh. Ha - I had to come back with a long retort about how Hugh has hosted both the Tonys and the Oscars...and borrowing from your words on ATC, Ellen, that he is always an affable and charming host! With emphasis on "affable"! I also had to point out that Hugh's current performing schedule ( PAN, DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, THE RIVER soon) were a hallmark of the kind of talent that he is Is it wicked of me to think that NPH pre-empted the announcement that Hugh will be the next TONYs host by saying he is not hosting this year, ahead of the TONYs formal announcement, implying that he is going to be busy with his Broadway show? I do not know if he was simply replying to a question, but maybe it would have been more circumspect to have remained noncommittal ( and let the TONYs people do the announcing for this year's event)? I don't like the implications of some reports which said " Hugh was taking over from NPH" as if Hugh was simply a replacement host ( although Hugh has always been good at being second choice for roles - LOL!). Btw - I hadn't realized that the actor I would see on TV occasionally is the same Steven Pasquale who sings in Bridge of Madison County. If he dances well, too, and good at annotating shows -- now that guy can give Hugh some competition Jo

I'm even nastier and hope that he gets bad reviews and won't be nominated. I can't stand him. He is way too overrated IMHO, and his recent digs at Hugh p*sses me off. Why are you sure that he will be nominated? Hopefully not! Has his show already opened? Can you imagine what a win would mean for his super-ego? *barf*

I wish Hugh would sometimes be less affable - LOL! Maybe he could sing WHO AM I - one version for Broadway ( like how he did it for the Philadelphia concert) and one version for a film adaptation ( like the version from the movie Les Miserables) -- some people are sorely in need of being educated about nuances of performing. Harris, included ( remember his dig in the last TONYs he hosted??)! Although if I know Hugh, he will likely turn it into a funny opening number conversation ( by proving that he can also sing a la Broadway Valjean) Broadway Hugh : Who am I? I'm Jean Valjean ( belting out loud!) Hollywood Hugh : Who am I? I'm Jean Valjean ( whispering to himself in a room) Broadway and Hollywood Hugh: 24601!!!!! ( belting really loud - goes both ways for either performing branch)! Host Hugh: Which means I suffer from multiple personality disorder! I can also do Wolverine ala Broadway...and can fly like Peter( not so much) as Blackbeard Hey, is Ramin Karimloo (Valjean in the Broadway revival this spring) also eligible for a nod? This is going to be an interesting TONYs for male performers in a lead role this year. Jo

Many think like that - look only at all those tweets that regret that it's Hugh and not NPH and that praise NPH as best host ever. *barf again* Harris has also tweeted and I don't know what to think about it. If it's meant nice ...

I wish Hugh would sometimes be less affable - LOL! Me too! LOL I will never forgive Harris for his dig at the Les Miserables cast last year and will never forget how the Broadway community laughed and applauded him for it. Hugh and "Who am I" is a good idea for the Tonys, even if some purists will still make snarky comments about his singing.

Well, the American Theatre Wing ( which created and continues to sponsor the TONY awards) loves Hugh! They finally officially acknowledge that he is a member of their Advisory Committee --
Wait a minute -- didn't Hugh fan Michael Riedel predict that Hugh will host this year's TONYs? Or did I get the year wrong? LOL!
Yup - he got it a year too early! I think Hugh was already being courted for the 2013 TONYs but he was busy winding up DAYS OF FUTURE PAST ( ended filming in June 2013) and maybe it was Harris who was the replacement host ( witchy comment from moi!).

Luzie, much as it annoys me, Harris is loved by many in the Broadway community. Even if he is only so-so in HEDWIG, numerous Tony voters are probably already poised to nominate if not pre-anoint him the winner. I agree; the thought rankles. I don't care for his overblown sense of entitlement. That's why I'd like to see Hugh co-produce this year's ceremony, as Harris has done in the past. It adds to the host's gravitas.
Jo, Steve Pasquake has a gorgeous voice but is not a dancer. He was the original Fabrizio when LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA tried out in Seattle but then got a major role as a dim-witted firefighter in the RESCUE ME TV series and had to relinquish the role to Matthew Morrison. Pasquale and wife Laura Benanti (my favorite female Bway performer) recently split, unfortunately.
Yes, Karimloo will be Tony eligible if LES MIZ opens by the deadline. Lots of variables!

One thing that annoyed me about the announcement today: To illustrate the news of Hugh as host, several reports -- not all -- chose to use a photo of Hugh alongside N. P. Harris. Why on earth not Hugh alone? Harris is not hosting or even co-hosting. Probably some sites wish he were indeed hosting again, and this was their way of showing it. Whatever, there are loads of photos of Hugh out there, and one of those should have been used.
End of rant.

On the other hand, the "other" awards show will have this as their theme in this year's ceremonies, according to reports -- It would have been more appropriate if Hugh were hosting this year's Oscars event, rather than Ellen. I wonder if there will be a glimpse of "Wolverine" (superhero) or "Jean Valjean" (literary hero) and even unexpected hero "Roddy" from Flushed Away ( animated film hero) in any of the clips? Back to the TONYs -- *Does the TONYs ever have a yearly theme? I do not recall that they have a special focus every year, except to celebrate the best in the theatre in the past season! And because these include live performances of what the theatre offered to its loyal audiences, there is much to cheer about and to enjoy of the night's celebrations. Too many triple threat and dramatic numbers to see! *One not so knowledgeable site ( Latinos Post) says that it is not known if Hugh will perform or not at the TONYs. LOL - this is the TONYs, not the OSCARS, where everyone is expected to show their triple threats ...I would expect that Hugh will give us another unforgettable Opening Number. Hopefully, he will get better-written material ( than what Bruce Villanch used to dish out all the time). *Some have commented that Hugh's work is not always effortless, especially so because he is not really a comedic talent. Hugh may not be a comedian, but he can deliver the punch lines very well! The 2009 Oscars Opening Number was very well-written and very relevant ( which is why people find something to laugh about when the current real-life situation is dire)...and because he is a very fine actor, Hugh's gift is to act it out well! That is his secret as a host -- he acts out his lines and what he is expected to do! If you check out YouTube, people are still flocking to see that clip ( now close to 7.8 million hits!) and many declare that it is the best Oscars opening ever. Put in relevant material, show it in a good rather than in a sarcastic light, act it out and perform it well -- of course having an affable personality adds to the charm -- and you have an A-1 formula to entertain people. Some do not like snarky comments ( especially if they are almost insulting) or smarmy hosts ( especially those who are very self-indulgent -- it rather turns off some people). But a good laugh is always welcome! And an uber-charming host brings out the best in the material if he is also a very good performer. Jo

Nice to see this tweet/instagram photo from The Broadway League, welcoming Hugh back to the hosting for the TONYs. The Broadway League is the industry association, once headed for a long time by Hugh's friend, the late Gerald Schoenfeld -- The Broadway League @thebwayleague · 8h #TBT to the 2012 @thetonyawards red carpet chatting with @realhughjackman about receiving a 2012… http://instagram.com/p/kXRGd9ls_Z The welcome-backs also came from The American Theatre Wing and CBS -- Hugh is really beloved in the industry.
