It was replayed here again at 10:00 pm last night - but true enough, I fell asleep midway, but did not miss the most important Hugh parts *Hugh does "work the room" with so much ease. But unlike imported Oscar hosts who do not have the same kind of familiarity with the other performers or even the audience ( even Ellen is only known as a popular TV host and not one of 'em) -- Hugh feels so much at home because he has worked with some of them, he comes from a solid theatrical background, and, like many, knew how it was to go to drama school and build yourself up in the world of theatre. *Hugh has such a deep knowledge of musical theatre ...and plays, too, as he comes from the drama course of the WAAPA training and has often mentioned favorite plays. Plus he did make an effort to see most of the shows nominated or featured, which is why he can relate to them, without a false note *We did not see an expected huge musical Opening number ( maybe because the producers wanted him to emphasize his role as host and not as performer...but at the same time to show some whimsical insights on the world of the theatre ... or was it altogether a Hugh Jackman decision on how to approach this year's hosting aspect? ) -- but in all aspects, albeit in snatches, they did utilize his talents ( he hopped, he sang, he tapped, he rapped, he waltzed, he inserted himself into a few scenes from current shows like the skipping rope-routine with ROCKY and the playing-the-piano routine for BEAUTIFUL, he told a few jokes, he made references to his other career, and media magnet-Hugh even pitched for his new play...he looked HOT - if that is considered a talent -LOL...and was overall Prince Charming!). He did not have room for cynicism or sarcasm ( although I think he could have found a better joke-writer) and too bad there was no room for being badass or melodramatic. *People may not have realized it but it was almost a mini-reprise of memorable moments from Back on Broadway -- **Mack the Knife **Rock Island **Stepping Out with my Baby **I Got Rhythm ( even the sneak into the mezzanines seemed like a take on his famous box incursions in Back on Broadway) **Lullaby of Broadway/On Broadway/I Happen to Like New York He even had his chorines from Back on Broadway showing up in some of the TONYs numbers -- and of course Patrick V and Warren C were there from the original team, too. And part of the audience were Back on Broadway devotees ( Hello, Ellen ) It was like performing with a bit of a wink *I think he enjoyed himself tremendously)! Will he be back - hmm...maybe when he has to pitch for a new show onstage once again? I wonder how he reacted to the response to his "bounce" and the look inside theatre life in his Opening number? I nod my head again, enjoying the theme of theatre life, everytime I see that sequence on YouTube Jo

Finally, the long-awaited tete-a-tete of Clint Eastwood and Hugh Jackman. I wonder what they had to say to each other The Rock Island Rappers! This is becoming a favorite pose lately - Hugh by a railing, in front of the ladies!

I wonder if Hugh reminded Clint of his immortal piece of conversation: "You're holding up the line, kid." Ellen

I'm sure Hugh meant that high-five in all sincerity. When we chatted at intermission at TWELTH (TWELFE) NIGHT, we agreed on how amazing the production was, in which Chahidi played a major role.

Ellen Ellen, when you say "when WE chatted at intermission"... did you mean you and your friends of you and HUGH??? Just wondering... Alma

Alma, the tale is somewhere here on the board. By coincidence, Hugh and I attended the same midweek matinee performance of the play. (He was with his Laughing Man business partner/friend and introduced me to him. Nice man.) Hugh and I talked a bit during intermission, agreeing that this was the best production of TWELFTH NIGHT we'd ever seen. Amazingly, once in a blue moon there are, happily, such chance encounters. Also had one (Hugh, Deb, Ava & Dali) outside Chelsea Market near the Highline three years ago on Father's Day, and a mini-one at the opening night of the most recent revival of A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE. If the law of averages holds, I've probably had all I'm going to get in this life. Ellen

The Rock Island audition has been part of Hugh's stage repertoire since April 2011 when he opened the one-man show in San Francisco.
And he has been playing with the hip-hop element since at least Back on Broadway in the same year.

I'm fine with the ones I've had. Saying hi at the stage door will suffice. Ellen
