Hugh was interviewed on "Access Hollywood" and "Extra" tonight. On the latter, he sang a bit of "OWABM," took and passed with flying colors a Tonys-host quiz, and said, "I could have been a Rockette." He was joking, of course, but hoo-boy, I hope another raft of stupid comments doesn't ensue.

And if you like anticipating with all the tiny details, the official TONYAWARDS twitter account will keep you filled in -- twitter.com/TheTonyAwardsThere's one video clip showing the Les Mis chorus cast singing DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING at the Paramount Hotel Pop-Up Shop where they sell TONYs memorabilia during the season. It was an impromptu surprise for the touristy crowd gathered there. Somehow, not seeing the Parisian scene for that iconic song makes it more of a joyous sing (odd!) rather than the revolutionary fervor identified with the song. Hmm... maybe it is a nice reminder to see the movie once again I wonder if Hugh will join the cast of Les Miserables if and when they perform at the TONYs, most likely singing One Day More or even Do You Hear the People Sing ? The writer of this article was probably looking for an angle ( Can Hugh Jackman step into the revered shoes of Neil Patrick Harris smiley-rolleyes010 ) - but has he really done his research?? www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/tonys/la-et-cm-tony-awards-rehearsals-hugh-jackman-20140607-story.html#page=2Excuse me!*Hugh Jackman has not only hosted 3 times in the past but also won an EMMY for the 2004 effort! *Hugh Jackman has also hosted one of the the most successful OSCAR celebrations with a universally- acclaimed Opening Number ( including a truly spontaneous standing ovation from his Hollywood peers)! *Hugh is not an understudy who is filling for the leading man because he is out! *Hugh hosted while he was also a performing nominee in 2004! *Hugh had to lend a helping hand to Neil to keep his hosting for one year interesting, by doing that famous song-and-dance duet with him! *It's Neil who has been following the footsteps of the celebrated star of Broadway! In 2004, Hugh was not just an EMMY-winning host but also a winning nominee for TBFO while Neil was a non-nominated supporting actor for ASSASSINS! *Somewhat from a different branch of the performing arts ( but rooted from musical theatre) -- Hugh Jackman is an Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe winner for his portrayal in a film adaptation of one of Broadway's most iconic musicals ( Les Miserables)! Not exactly short on talent! Not exactly short on box office draw, either! And not just a fantasy superhero ( as this author seems to think Hugh's talent mainly lies) but also a real hero from a revered literary work! <tantrum> Okay, here's the article -- This writer has absolutely no clue as to how Hugh rates as an entertainer on Broadway! He probably had no idea that Hugh was a shoo-in winner for his outstanding work in TBFO (show panned, but Hugh celebrated by critics, media, and fans...and TONY voters!). He probably never saw or heard about BACK ON BROADWAY or even the replay ( re-named ONE NIGHT ONLY ) in Hollywood where this writer is probably based. He never read Ben Brantley's love letters to Hugh's talent over the years ( from Carousel to Back on Broadway)! He probably never knew that the TONYs gave Hugh the singular honor of a second TONY for his work as a performer and for what he has done for the Broadway community ( in the area of humanitarian work). He is amazed by Neil because he was "verbal and comedic" during rehearsals while Hugh was doing nothing but dance rehearsals! Arghh - I need to sit on my hands now smiley-computer004... And he thinks Hugh was offered the hosting gig because he is WOLVERINE smiley-rolleyes010 Why do they allow this kind of so-called journalists around?? Jo

This guy knows absolutely nothing about Hugh's theater/performing experience and has the nerve to write an article about him!!! <rant> <boo> <wtf> I was looking at the article on the LA Times site but couldn't find a place to comment. I wanted to give the writer a few thousand choice words!!! Unfortunately this was also a case where Hugh's humility & sometimes self-deprecating humor worked against him. The ignoramus writer took the ball and ran with it! In the wrong direction!!!While we're on the subject of ignoramuses, I think Ellen posted the link to that new Tony promo that had the nerve to feature a big clip of Neil doing a dancing number when hosting!! That is beyond insulting to their current host. They should be ashamed! <rant> <boo> <wtf> Sue

Re the supposed Opening Number -- I can't remember where I read or saw it, but Hugh said he is not going to be front and center ( because the real dancers will be!) for this one ( the AFTER MIDNIGHT number). Hope he was just being his usual self-deprecating self. Or maybe there is a secret number featuring Hugh front and center, before the AFTER MIDNIGHT dancing happens...Otherwise, I am not so sure that the host is not being sidestepped in this year's TONYs if his role is simply to hover while the proceedings and the big production numbers from the shows are staged.
Also, from the Variety article --
What exactly does the producer mean when he says that " it's like Hugh's found himself as a Broadway performer"? Didn't he see BACK ON BROADWAY? Or earlier, THE BOY FROM OZ?
Also, Variety cites that " Kirshner and Weiss, who have produced the Tony broadcast since 2003 and won seven Emmys for it, first worked with him on the 2005 telecast."
Hugh hosted 2003, 2004, and 2005! How can they have worked with him for the first time only in 2005? And surely they saw him in that incredible 2004 Opening Number?!
Sorry, but I seem to be missing something...or are the journalists being careless smiley-rolleyes010

More updates from the official TONYAWARDS twitter account -- twitter.com/TheTonyAwardsIt looks like it will be ONE DAY MORE for the Les Miserables number! Is it just me, but isn't that chorus getting a little stale as an intro to Les Mis? Maybe they could have gone for DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING ( which was the signature song from the film adaptation...and my own favorite since Day One )?...Except maybe, unlike in the finale for the film, Jean Valjean would not be a part of it...and neither would Javert be. And don't forget about this special reminder/ TV Alert -- Jo

I think I understand what Hugh is trying to do in his interviews. He knows he has to be gracious, plus he's consciously lowering the bar so that when everything clicks his standing ovation will be all the more impressive. Yet the tone of the latest news pieces on the Tonys and the questions put to him bother me. OK, it's one thing to be charmingly, ingratiatingly self-deprecating, but it's quite another to keep pushing the idea that Harris is the be-all and end-all of hosts, an idea that's been drummed so steadily into the public consciousness that people now automatically assume it's true. Has everyone forgotten that Hugh was considered the standard bearer after three consecutive very successful hostings that brought in the highest ratings in years? That several years ago everyone asked what advice Hugh gave to Tonys neophyte host Harris, who had Hugh's huge shoes to fill? How can Harris possibly do as well, etc.? For Hugh to say Harris is in the same class as or better than Hugh's hero Billy Crystal is quite a hyperbolic declaration and only serves to further cements the perception that Harris is now the go-to king of hosts. The halo effect can work in reverse. There's such a thing as being too gracious--something I don't think Harris will ever be guilty of. I feel like talking back to the TV and telling Hugh to cool it. Ellen I've been feeling the same way this week Ellen. He is adding to that perception that Neil is THE Tony host! And you're right Neil wouldn't be that gracious in return-I like Neil but find him to be on the arrogant side. I really am anxious to see the opening number. I don't know if anyone posted it here but in the interview he did with Gayle King (CBS This Morning I think) he said he was very nervous about the opening number, that they're doing something that hasn't been done before & he hopes he "can pull it off". Again, could just be his self-deprecating way but I'll be glad when it's over and is shown to be a great success! Sue

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Ellen! Including the "never can be guilty of being gracious" attribution ...Someone on BWW said she/he could not stand his interviews - "too full of himself" ...Sometimes when people are too self-centered, I suspect there is a complex hiding somewhere - haha, I am not a psychologist by any chance On the other hand, Hugh is Hugh -- his graciousness and charisma will shine through everytime. Did you know he emailed Channing Tatum to welcome him to the XMEN family, even as he says he is not sure if everything is already in the bag? Channing has now been added to those who think Hugh is the nicest person in showbiz! I wonder how many of the audience will be "charmed" by a man in drag if the number is prolonged?? Maybe a few seconds would be amusing...but a whole production number for mass audiences?? I liked him better when he was the adolescent doctor An afterthought : Why don't the journalists who do the interviews and write the articles do their research on Hugh's hosting and theatrical background?? One look at the Oscars Opening Number in 2009 and the 2004 TONYs opening number would be enough to convince them that he is a top-notch entertainer! And look up some clips from BACK ON BROADWAY or the press reels from THE BOY FROM OZ? Or are they too lazy to do basic research?? They could draw their own conclusions from his performances! Jo

Another instance of Hugh's unfailing graciousness --
Not too many people know that Hugh and British-born Warren were in the London "Oklahoma!" production together. Hugh was of course the lead as Curly while Warren was one of the dancing cowhands...And they did click well enough together in BACK ON BROADWAY!

Is the secret out?? www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/hugh-jackman-rap-tap-dance-host-tony-awards-article-1.1821168I wonder if the concept ( probably coming from Hugh himself) is to put up a show that has crossover appeal ( the young demos!). Hugh already has his young demos fanbase who might think rap is cool...but not the usual theatrical stuff So, who's aping who now -- NPH will invite audience participation...old hat, from the 2004 TONYs, if you ask me smiley-rolleyes010 I'd like to see Hugh invite his audience members to perform with him, as graciously as he did with Sarah Jessica in that long-remembered TONYs episode...although he might be more audacious this time

I thought the Daily News article had finally gotten it right & was highlighting what makes Hugh special as a host...right up until they added the line about Neil being "a frequent Tony host"! Why couldn't they just say "who has also hosted 4 times" NPH IS NOT MR TONY AWARDS! <rant> Otherwise, it was a great article. I really hate rap though so I hope the rap part isn't too long and that most of the focus is on Hugh doing what he does best, singing and dancing and being charming and gracious! I am also in the camp that wishes they weren't doing performances from future shows. One of them is said to be iffy about even getting a Broadway go ahead so how weird is that? smiley-rolleyes010 In less than 20hrs all will be revealed! Can't wait! I'm up late so this is it for me tonight. Sue
