Boxers are known and train very hard for their amazing footwork. Maybe dancing is not such an alien activity for them Jo

Oh, yes, Jo, they have to be light on their feet! Remember "Mohammed Ali... float like a butterfly, sting like a bee..." But like many other athletes who have to be light on their feet, that's still a looooooong way from actually DANCING... and to not look bad right alongside Gene Kelly? That's a super-wow. Not even dancers who specialize in OTHER forms of dance will actually be able to master tap dancing; the skills are different; cross-overs are not automatically easy. Dancers need really special talent, and training, to be good at different kinds of dance. And to think that Hugh didn't really train in dancing at all as a youngster... smiley-happy096 Alma

According to Hugh, when he was filming Van Helsing, he was also learning to tap dance in his trailer. That was apart from the vocal lessons he took with an European opera tenor. This was in preparation for his forthcoming yearlong engagement for THE BOY FROM OZ then... He does do his lessons! And he makes sure he doesn't forget the skills ( According to James McAvoy, Hugh was singing songs from Les Miserables in his trailer for vocal wamups)...
Loved the tap dancing with his chorines in Back on Broadway! That was superb...although I am not too sure which I liked/loved better -- the tap dancing as choreographed by Warren Carlyle or his Fosse-like moves designed by Kenny Ortega for the Legs Diamond number!
Bliss!

You know, Sue, I thought it was Sugar Ray LEONARD too, but I got to thinking this video goes back a long, long time, and we've seen Sugar Ray looking barely older than Hugh in pix and video getting prepped for Real Steel... so I looked it up and it's actually Sugar Ray ROBINSON (1921-1989). I've known and absolutely adored Gene Kelly's dancing ever since I can remember, but I was truly amazed at a professional boxer having that amazing tap-dancing talent. Hats off to him!!! smiley-happy096 Alma I have to laugh because I knew it was Sugar Ray Robinson and fully intended to write Robinson, and in fact thought I did, but at the time I was also thinking about writing something about Sugar Ray Leonard but decided not to... I think my brain just got ahead of me I didn't even realize my faux pas till I saw your comment. Re: future movie ideas...I agree with Jamie. I've long hoped for a GK biographical movie because as mentioned, he was so much more than just a dancer. He was a very well rounded, complex man so on every level it would be a great role for Hugh! I think there is just a small window of opportunity for that to happen though. In a few years he'll be too old to play Mr Kelly. Sue

I share your hopes that he'll do a great biopic that will earn him a lot of credit and attention among the powers that be in H'wood. Kelly would be an optimal subject--but with talk of more X-Men or Wolverine movies down the road, well, there go our hopes, I'm afraid.

I may be wrong, but this BWW headline seems completely misleading -- unless they completely change the format from previous years! And would Hugh agree to be simply part of an opening number that belongs more to one particular show ... and not be the focus of it smiley-rolleyes010 www.broadwayworld.com/article/AFTER-MIDNIGHT-to-Open-TONYS-Sting-Carole-King-to-Perform-More-Tony-Details-20140523#.U38-s9GKDOUI doubt that one production number from a specific show will be the Opening Number -- that belongs to the Host! What Michael Riedel was likely speculating was that in the order of presentation among nominees's (and non-nominees) selected production numbers, it seems AFTER MIDNIGHT has landed the first slot during the telecast. Which is presumably the choicest slot because the TV audience will likely be at its highest rating at that point. Jo

Hello, I'm not new here-used to frequent Ozalots Board but had to create a new account here. Not sure if this is prohibited but I have an extra pair of tickets to the TONY and I want to sell at cost. My daughter got me a better seat. I am not looking to make any profit on this. Thanks, Char Char - Please let us know if/when the tickets are taken.

Michael Riedel snoops...er...scoops about possible TONY telecast The opening act & the finale sound like they'll be amazing!! Can't wait. I'm sure they're keeping Hugh's opening number a closely guarded secret but I have no doubt that it will be spectacular! I wonder if his friendship with Warren Carlyle had any influence on the coveted opening act spot!! Also On the Sunny Side of the Street couldn't be a more perfect number for Hugh to join in on. On another note I used to think that I'd like to see Hugh & Neil do another number together, but I've changed my mind. I just don't want them to start being thought of as the latest duo or two sides of the same coin...I'm sure Neil's fans feel similarly. While Neil has talent and can be entertaining I've lately started to feel that there's not a lot of substance beneath all the hype. I don't think he's in the same league with Hugh at all! I truly hope that he wins the Tony based on his performance and not based on the hype, but of course if that (hype win) happened it wouldn't be the first time smiley-rolleyes010 I am really looking forward to the Tony broadcast. Sounds like we may get a great heaping portion of Hugh to enjoy! Sue

I don't think Hugh had any say on the sequence or order of the presentation of the shows that will be featured at the TONYs -- maybe they just drew lots or else the show producers will be up in arms...I don't think even the TONYs producers had any say on that, too - LOL! Maybe after the sequence has been established ( this includes nominated and non-nominated shows, a more recent practice - presumably because the TONYs are essentially one big commercial for Broadway and what's currently playing there), they will then fit the gaps for the in-between( the actual awarding, the host's occasional bits and pieces, maybe other theatre matters such as the speech of the American Theatre Wing ) I agree with you, Sue -- I don't want another Hugh/NPH duet. For one, it will be an unfair advantage over the other nominees for Best Actor and Best Musical Revival. Also, what else can they milk that has not been done in that " Anything You Can Do..." duet of a few years ago? LOL- maybe let them do a parody version of BROADWAY BARES? An angry mutant singing and dancing with a wig and net stockings...and a transgender snikting and snakting with pink adamantium blades ... Both showing off their chests and whatever else, of course! Hugh has moved on even more powerfully with his stage gravitas since then - he did his uber-successful one-man show ( Back on Broadway) and even received an Oscar nod for one of the most coveted film portrayals of an original stage role ( Les Miserables)...and even hosted a show for the First Family on Christmas! They even handed him a special TONY for his performance ( presumably for BOB) and for his philantrophy. When he gets to host the TONY's this year, I am sure there will also be strong and lingering memories of his new box office hit (the biggest one in his career, at this point) DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Everything's coming up roses for Hugh Jackman! So, I am selfish enough ( sorry ) not to want Hugh to share the limelight with anyone else, NPH or any other stage actor, unless it was a mega number involving the entire community! Jo

Well, Mr. Reidell, I can't think of anyone who would NOT like to join the Hugh Jackman conga line... including us Ozalots! And Sue, just like you I hope we get a great heaping portion of Hugh to enjoy at the Tonys! smiley-happy036 Me too, Jo, I am selfish enough (no apology from me!) to want Hugh to share NONE of the limelight with anyone else, unless it's a mega number with the entire community! I'm on a real high... because I just saw DOFP and I can't wait to watch it again. So I'm off to that other thread! Alma

Just a wild thought ( now that The TONYs are only 11 days away!) -- Could the Opening Number be similar to the full-scale production number ( all nominated and non-nominated productions participating) that followed his Opening Number in 2004, but in each case Hugh will be part of the staging ? Like tap dancing with After Midnight, giving his own interpretation of Hedwig ( pink wig and pink adamantium claws), singing Stars for Les Miserables, singing a Carol King song, be one of the multi-characters played by Geoffrey Mays, and maybe even a scene or two parodies from the plays...so long as all the numbers encapsulate the current season. Much like the 2009 Oscars opener? And maybe a different but also wonderful reprise for the finale? LOLOL - sorry for the fantasizing and I'm probably way off-base ...but Hugh is such a tremendous and charismatic talent that it would be a waste if he simply sang or danced for a few minutes or give witty comments What would you like to see him do? Update from the official TONY site -- Revised May 27, 2014 Maybe Hugh and Clint can sing THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA I wonder if Hugh will make a comment about their supposed similarity in looks Jo[/quote] Probably not a good idea . Clint couldn't really sing even when younger. He limped through I Still See Eliza and I Talk To The Trees, but Harve Presnell handled the honors for Maria.

Just kidding He will be there, even if he had never been on a Broadway stage, to promote his film adaptation of Jersey Boys ( which is opening soon). Jo

Or was Clint primarily invited to present the awards for BEST MUSICAL SCORE, where the stage adaptation of BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY is a favorite to win? Just guessing, of course Jo

I have a feeling Eastwood is there primarily to publicize the opening of the JERSEY BOYS movie on June 20. But if he were to present Best Score to BRIDGES--well, that would be wonderful.

I'm intrigued as to where this particular body motion is going to be part of. Or is this "bounce" step the new way to enter the stage of RCMH?
Is anyone attending the rehearsals?
