EXCLUSIVE: From the DEA to superhero nemesis, Boyd Holbrook has steeped to the other side of the law. The Narcos star has signed on as the lead villain opposite Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in Fox’s Wolverine 3, I’ve learned.


Holbrook will play a relentless, calculating and intense head of Security for a global enterprise who is set against Jackman’s clawed Wolverine/Logan hero. The CAA repped actor’s deal just was completed on the film, which is gearing up for a production start in May.

David James Kelly wrote the latest upcoming movie of the X-Men franchise spinoff with James Mangold directing. After nearly 20-years as the iconic Marvel character, Jackman said last year that the upcoming third standalone Wolverine film will mark his final appearance as Logan. The pic is set to hit theaters on March 3 next year.


Kentucky-born Holbrook starred as Agent Steve Murphy on Netflix’s 10-episode multilingual drug cartel drama about the life and investigation of Pablo Escobar. A second season of the Golden Globe and WGA Awards nominated Narcos is set to premiere on the steaming service later this year. Hatfields & McCoys alum Holbrook is also coming off a lead role opposite Elisabeth Moss in Sundance pic The Free World and will next be seen in Fox’s Luke Scott helmed Morgan with Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti.

Does this mean there is no Sabretooth? Or is the character described above just one of Wolverine's antagonists?

I have read somewhere that filming will start in May. The article confirms that start date.

But this sounds like a situation out of a James Bond movie

The Wolverine followed the clawed mutant to Japan. Does this one also follow him to other exotic places, other than just the usual Canadian/American environs?

Is that why they are also filming in New Orleans?

Looking back at the plot of DEATH OF WOLVERINE - is there a hint of that here?

But AICN is somewhat skeptical -- because they want a real super-villain as the main antagonist...and more star power! Even the fanboy reactions on their feedback section are lukewarm.

I can understand that sentiment!




SuperheroHype fanboys ( see reactions on the feedback section) are also somewhat skeptical about the character being introduced ( partly because the character does not belong to the OldManLogan stable of villains, if that storyline is even the inspiration for this movie.

I wonder if this news was supposed to have been released unintentionally ahead of other casting news? Is he really going to be the main villain ( one complaint is that his character is a made-up villain, not derived from one of Wolverine's powerful antagonists in the comicbook series or even in previous XMEN movies...and that Holbrook is not a major actor in Hollywood yet).

I wonder if keeping the lid on the general storyline of the final Wolverine story is a good strategy?

Sometimes, knowing about the plotline and the main characters can whet the appetite of fans ( especially if there is already familiarity with source materials) very much and can give a much stronger sense of anticipation. Look at how DEADPOOL revealed (in the ComicCon in July 2015) what to expect - that turned out to be the most applauded presentation, not APOCALYPSE, there. The marketing buildup followed from there -- with some strong hints on how the charcter of DEADPOOL will be portrayed! And DEADPOOL has now become the top-ranked box office hit in the XMEN franchise!


Of course there are people who hate spoilers...but giving the fans a very solid idea of what to expect is what may be needed to propel the project to A-1 level of anticipation!

NOOOOOO!!!!! It's over. They had a chance and shot themselves in the foot. There is no significant threat to Wolverine in these movies other than inserting a proper Victor Creed/SABERTOOTH as counterpoint. All that had to be done to get it right was to KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID and write the role of Sabertooth that much more juicy. Bring back Liev Schreiber and alter it with some Special Effects to make him the more physically imposing of the two.
This could have been worthwhile but the positioning of a "behind the scenes scheming villain", even one who may come across as vaguely articulate is just another repeat of the Stryker villain he's been facing in some form throughout all his independent movies as well as the x-men movies to an extent.

Farewell Hugh...BRING ON THE REBOOT.

I think that is why a little more opening of the lid ( of secrecy) might win fans over early on. Rather than letting this somewhat underwhelming news dominate the expectations.

Who's Boyd Holbrook ?

Holbrook was discovered while working part-time as a carpenter for a theatre in Kentucky.[2][3] He signed with Elite Models in 2001. He has worked for other agencies such as Wilhelmina Models.[citation needed] Holbrook has been a model for such designers and labels as Gucci, Jean Paul Gaultier, Versus, Hugo Boss, Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Moschino, Marc Jacobs, DSquared².[citation needed]

Holbrook and model Omahyra Mota were the subjects of photographer Ellen Von Unwerth Paris gallery exhibition "Omahyra & Boyd" and the 2005 book of that title from Exhibitions International (ISBN 2-914171-20-X).[4][5]

He released a short series of poems through the website Model-Max.com, accompanied by illustrations by Jamie Strachan.[6]

From modeling and traveling throughout Europe and Asia, he raised enough money and studied film in NYU [7] where he received a SCPS Certificate in 16mm Film (photography, lighting and editing writing). Holbrook also audited classes at Columbia University on screen writing and film history. He has since produced five short films.[citation needed]

Holbrook studied acting in William Esper Studio,[citation needed] and completed the prestigious two year Meisner Program as well as Shane Ann Younts - Voice and Speech 2 Year Program.[1] It was in 2007 when he sent a screenplay to director Gus Van Sant, who was impressed enough to give him the role of Denton Smith for the movie Milk.[8] His prior acting work includes a role in the "Allison" music video for Permanent Me alongside model Tiah Eckhardt.[9]

Holbrook portrays DEA agent Steve Murphy in the Netflix series Narcos.

In April 2016, it was announced that Holbrook had been cast as the antagonist in the sequel to The Wolverine.[11]

It would be interesting to find out more details on the character he is supposed to play in the movie. Will he be the diabolical villain behind the scenes? Will he be the antagonist in fight scenes with the Wolverine?

Will he share dramatic scenes with Hugh?

There is mention ( scant!) of WOLVERINE 3 in this report at Cinemacon.

Coming out of CinemanCon, Fox Studios' presentation saw a slew of announcements regarding Deadpool, Avatar and more. New footage from X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day: Resurgence and Assassin's Creed was also shown off.

Details include:

Deadpool 2 is officially green lit, with Ryan Reynolds and the original creative team returning (director Tim Miller and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick). No release date has been announced just yet.

X-Men: Apocalypse footage confirms Magneto is Quicksilver's father; shows Mystique as having a leader role; the movie takes place ten years after X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and the trailer shows the younger X-Men being in awe of Mystique.

Wolverine 3 didn't get much attention other than an "Untitled Wolverine" title card shown on screen.

Gambit did not get mentioned at all.

There was some buzz that Liev Schreiber might return as Sabertooth for WOLVERINE 3 - he was even quoted during the last Oscars that he had some conversation with Hugh about it -- but it was not definitive.

Now comes news that Liev will return to Broadway as Le Vicomte de Valmont in LES LIASONS DANGEREUSES. But the show won't preview till October 8.

Was just about to post about Schreiber's playing the evil Valmont this fall; seems like I just saw the last revival starring Laura Linney. Hope HJ has the time to sink his teeth into a classic role like that sometime soon. (But SHOWMAN and Wolvie3 first, please.)

I saw parts of the movie ( and John Malkovich is a special favorite of mine)...and Liev sounds right for this role, too.
