Zorlu Center -- very large performing venue! But Hugh has performed his One Night Only one-man show at the erstwhile KODAK/DOLBY theater in Los Angeles - so he already has a sense of how the show works in a large theatre. Australian actor Hugh Jackman will be in Istanbul for four shows between March 17 and 20.

A Tony-Award-winning actor, renowned for his roles in movies such as ‘”Wolverine,” “X-Men,” “Les Misérables” and “Real Steel,” Jackman will perform his show “An Evening with Hugh Jackman,” which is a concert that also contains improvisations. He will be accompanied by dancers and an orchestra of 27 pieces during the performance.

The one-man show features various segments, including tributes to classic movie musicals like “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Guys and Dolls,” as well as odes to the Aborigine culture of Jackman’s native Australia and Australian composer Peter Allen.

Jackman just finished a Broadway run in the Jez Butterworth play “The River.” Speaking to the Associated Press, he said he would hit the stage again next month. “My one-man show I did here on Broadway a few years back, I’m going to do in Turkey. I’m very excited about that,” he said, and added:

“It should be fun. We’ll see how the Turks like it.”

The show will be on stage at the Zorlu Center PSM.

World-renown Australian actor Hugh Jackman has said his grandfather was an Ottoman and he might “call myself a Turk.”

In an interview with daily Hürriyet, Jackman said his grandfather did not immigrate to Australia from Greece, but he did so from the Ottoman lands.

“My father and uncle went to the place where my grandfather immigrated from, and from what they say, that region which is in Greece today belonged to the Ottoman Empire at that time,” Jackman said.

“So I am the descendant of an Ottoman grandfather. Do not think that I’m saying this because I’m coming to Turkey, but I am a Turk. Yes, I think I may say that I’m a Turk.”

Jackman will be in Istanbul for four shows between March 17 and 20.

Jackman also said he was a fan of Turkish cuisine and he would prepare Turkish coffee at home with his son. “We can’t get the taste I remember from Turkey,” Jackman said.

We’ve had a look at actor Hugh Jackman’s ancestors’ 1911 census return. The results are from his paternal Bellas and Furniss lines.

The 1911 census return shows Hugh’s paternal grandmother, Glory Margaret Bellas, under one month old and living in a rather busy household - 13 people (nine of whom were adults) living in a nine-roomed house!

Glory was living with her parents (Hugh’s paternal great-grandparents), Nicholas Isidor Bellas and Dora Bellas nee Furniss, and her grandparents (Hugh’s paternal great-great-grandparents), Charles and Margaret Furniss.

The extended family had been born in various places around north England and the midlands; Glory and her mother had both been born in Manchester, Charles Furniss in Derby and Margaret Furniss in Bolton, Lancashire. However, Glory’s father was Greek and had been born in Constantinople. We can see that Nicholas had certainly lived in Constantinople for some of his earlier life as his eldest two children had also been born there. These children are probably from another marriage as Nicholas and Dora had only been married for six years and the ‘number of children born alive to the marriage’ has been listed as two.

In 1911, Charles Furniss (aged 85) recorded himself as being retired on a pension, having worked for the railway. Nicholas Bellas was working as an accountant for a company manufacturing cigarettes.

But BELLAS sounds like it is a Greek name.

Is this like for non-English operas ( most operas!) where at the top of the proscenium (or maybe a big screen for this large venue) the surtitles run along the streaming medium?


This is why I have wondered how Hugh will manage the audience interactions. Presumably, English is not as widely spoken in Istanbul - or is that a wrong premise as Istanbul is supposed to be cosmopolitan? But then again, many international shows have been presented in this venue ( some later ones included Phantom of the Opera, a show with Gerard Depardieu, etc). Maybe the use of surtitles is meant to attract a wider audience, maybe even from neighboring countries. Of course many know Hugh Jackman -- he is Wolverine after all wolverine
