Hugh is bringing his one-man show to Istanbul? Can this be true? I know some of our European OZalots were hoping for London . . . Start saving your pennies - sounds like they have plans for Spring 2015. Promo for a new theater - the bit about Hugh starts at 1:55

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorlu_Center_PSMIt looks like the venue ( largest in Europe and third largest performing center in the world) is part of the worldwide Nederlander Organization. It has a capacity of 2,242!

Reportedly he's booked for two shows in Istanbul sometime in March, likely having something to do with the 100-year Anzac anniversary/battle of Gallipoli. Yeah, looks like two performances - Mar 17, and 18, 2015 Who's going? <anyone> If it were a bit cooler climate (and not in the neighborhood of a War Zone!) I *might* consider it, but no. I think I'll wait for him to take to the stage in London . . . in something - anything.

Even if Turkey were not playing footsie with Iran and supporting terrorism these past several years, I'd be inclined to let the overseas fans have their turn. Hope it all goes smoothly for Hugh and his audience. Will his program include "Istanbul Not Constantinople"? Ellen

"Istanbul, not Constantinople" - LOL - that really ages us I have never been to Istanbul ( with all its fabled treasures - the museum Topkapi, for one) but I have been to Ephesus, also on the Adriatic coast. I never realized what historical and religious legacies had been left there - in some respects, more impressive than what you will find in the excavated Pompeii ( such as the library). Hugh is becoming more and more of an international superstar - not just in movies but now he is bringing his triple-threat talent and stage charisma to places other than North America! Will he eventually come to this side of the world? Maybe it can start with a one-man show in Australia -- and us in Southeast Asia would not be too far away...It seems that international performances are becoming the new audience attraction these days. We had Phantom, Wicked, and even an early Cinderella ( with Lea Salonga but mostly with an international cast - from the Australian stage) and also the popular Schonberg/Boublil music concert...Even pop concerts are too many these days ( we expect Mariah Carey this coming month - and we have had Beiber/Swift/One Direction if I am not mistaken)...At the recent Singapore GrandPrix, it has become an attraction not just for the F-1 night racing but also for the fab concert performances held there which attract the young adult crowds. Good for us -- and also good for the performers ( they not only widen their audiences but they do get to places which are of historical and cultural importance, too) Jo

Heh, and we thought it was a big deal when the S.F. and Toronto tryouts for BACK ON BROADWAY boasted an 18-piece (or whatever) orchestra. Probably the cost of musicians is lower there.

Istanbul is on the northwest part of Turkey, quite far from the Turkey/Syria border in the southeast. It is closer to the border with Bulgaria.
It is the economic, cultural, and historical heart of Turkey - so it may also be his interest in the city and the country , not just the engagement, which has attracted Hugh.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istanbul
If Turkey is overrun completely ( probably impossible and improbable to happen), the engagement can always be cancelled, understandably. Jo

Why not in Istanbul? Inform yourself! Istanbul and Turkey aren't uncivilized and are NOT more dangerous than cities in your country and are NOT a warzone!

Why not in Istanbul? Inform yourself! Istanbul and Turkey aren't uncivilized and are NOT more dangerous than cities in your country and are NOT a warzone! I happened to see this news item in my news feed. This occurred the other day. It could have happened anywhere in the world, but this particular incident did happen in Istanbul. It was not widely reported in the news media. I did not include the referenced video. At least the Turkish government condemned the attack. "Turkish Muslim Nationalists Assault US Servicemen in Istanbul This shocking video shows how three U.S. Navy Sailors in Istanbul were attacked and chased by a mob just because they are U.S. citizens. Three U.S. Navy sailors experienced extreme prejudice and hatred in Istanbul from a group of 12 Turkish Muslim nationalists. The sailors were attacked on a crowded street in Istanbul where they had paint thrown at them and hoods put over their faces. The assailants are members of the nationalist Turkish Youth Union (TGB). They face possible charges of insult, injury and breaching public protest laws. The U.S. embassy condemned the attack, calling it “appalling.” The Pentagon said that shore leave is cancelled in Turkey for other servicemen from the U.S. Navy. The Turkish Foreign Ministry also spoke out, condemning the attack and branding it as being disrespectful and “impossible to view with tolerance.” Ellen

It could have happened anywhere in the world ... Exactly, it could have happened anywhere else in the world! It's an awful incident and inexcusable , but that doesn't mean that Istanbul is uncivilized and too dangerous or that Hugh should not bring his show there as it's implied here by some. Everywhere are racial attacks, in my country and in your country, too - unfortunately.

Looks like only the oil-rich crowd from the surrounding "neighborhood" can afford to go. Ordinary fans must be mightily p.o.'d

The only discount offers I can understand is the first category " 10% discount" for senior citizens and for students. The pricing quotes include both GBP ( sorry, my keyboard does not the British pound sign) and $ quote (was that a mistake?). Turkey is not yet part of the European Union and hence the quotes are not in EURO currency. Very rich history and culture -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TurkeyI didn't realize Istanbul has a population of almost 14 million. Jo

Here's one quip I remember from BACK ON BROADWAY that I somehow don't think will find its way into this particular show: "Wolverine would make a killing in this town as a mohel--sextuplets, no problem." Ellen
