A lengthy review, still generally positive and complimentary to Hugh's talent and performance, with some major reservations. But still, a very disappointing 3 out of 5 stars review! He does include the songlist from the show. dailyreview.com.au/hugh-jackman-broadway-to-oz-review-rod-laver-arena-melbourne/33673EDIT:dailyreview.com.au/hugh-jackman-broadway-to-oz-review-rod-laver-arena-melbourne/33673#comment-79977Uh-oh -- the theatre purist is showing his colors again! 3 OUT OF 5 STARS - barely passing smiley-rolleyes010 He missed the whole point of this musical retrospective of a performer's life and career! It was never meant to be a tribute to musical theatre and I thought his comparison with the Audra McDonald show was not fitting! He was looking for something else and what did not fit in with his expectations, he dismissed as inconsequential and too octane! Hope he takes a lesson from Ben Brantley who gave Back on Broadway such an excellent insight on how a performer can charm and entertain an audience -- and that was on one of Broadway's theatres on West 46th, right in the middle of the iconic theatre district! People are not easily pleased over there! Even the American Theatre Wing recognized Hugh's achievements that year with his second TONY!

The Les Miserables medley is very interesting. It has also been very well-praised by the two critics so far and by the crowd.
*Soliloquy -- as some say, his Oscar-winning moment, had the gods been more fair. It is also his second Soliloquy for the night ( the other one is the Soliloquy from CAROUSEL). Interesting that when he delivers a lengthy musical monologue, he reaps very high praise for it. It must be because he is able to combine his fine acting talent and his way with a song!
*I Dreamed a Dream -- I am not surprised at this choice. When I saw earlier that he seemed to have tears in his eyes, I guessed right that he must have sung I DREAMED A DREAM ( for one, the title could relate to his own life and career, but just the title). He is not the first well-known male musical theatre star to have sang the song. Michael Ball ( the original Marius from Les Miserables) has recorded the song many years ago as part of an album on musical theatre songs and has also performed it in concert. I wonder if Hugh also changed some of the lyrics. It is actually an excellent solo song because of the haunting melody and the drama behind the lyrics. It does not even have to be performed in the context of Les Miserables, as witnessed in the tremendous success of Susan Boyle.
*One Day More -- he performed this in Turkey. It would be a natural for this concert where he has the voices of many singers, most likely with some musical theatre background. It is also a very highly-identifiable song from the musical.
I wish I could have heard the medley!

Posted by Adele K. Thomas on Twitter -- According to a review of the show, he did sing a medley of songs from the musical. Is he teary-eyed? Yes, he's teary-eyed! What was the song in TBFO in which he cried? Nancy

Thanks for the correction, Ruby/J. Now that I think of it -- didn't Lara or some other from his backups sing I Dreamed a Dream in Turkey, too?
Was it Valjean's Soliloquy which might have brought tears to Hugh's eyes? That must have been magnificent ( and brave -- it is not really concert material) - to sing a song meant to embody one's innermost thoughts and deepest emotions in front of such a vast crowd ( who may or may not have been familiar with the song and its origin). It is arguably his best acting song!
I had hoped you would post ( I saw Pat's tweet and thought you might have come with her) -- can you give more details on the song from GREATEST SHOWMAN?
*Title of the song? *What was it all about? *Was it a basically a solo or was it a group song? *What was the crowd reaction?
Btw, was it only Lara of the original Broadway backups who was there or were there others?
Thanks and let us know more about the concert!
Jo

Lol that's great, Jo. Glad I decided to quickly post it at 5:30 A.M. before I had to get ready for work! Lol -- I posted the link (given by hughmanity) to Hugh's SINGIN' IN THE RAIN number on a thread on Broadwayworld called "Harvey Weinstein to bring SINGIN' IN THE RAIN to Broadway". Some forty minutes later, the link was featured on BWW's daily news update And now it's on Twitter and on other theatre sites! Thanks, hughmanity Jo

Thanks for Tenterfield Saddler -- such an emotional tale sung even more poignantly by Hugh in front of Peter's own countrymen!
Jo
PS: Here's the original singing his own song --

Another tweeter noted the tears in his eyes as he sung the number from Les Miserables ( The Soliloquy?) --
