Logan, 2017’s top-grossing film – for now – followed in third place as Fox’s Logan dropped 54% to an estimated $17.5M after its third weekend of play. The Hugh Jackman hit has grossed $184M making it now the biggest of the three stand-alone Wolverine pics. The worldwide tally now sits at $524M on its way to nearly $700M.

Hope that happens. It opens in Japan only on June 1 -- will that box office allow LOGAN to cross to the $ 700 miilion territory?

The film's doing even better worldwide, as it's passed the half billion mark, sitting on estimated $524M. Obviously, it's more than any of the previous solo Wolverine movies, but also more than the final hauls of Ant-Man ($519M) and X-Men: The Last Stand ($459M). LOGAN won't make Deadpool numbers, but it's doing great, considering its R-rating and the relatively small budget of $97M

LOGAN is projected to finish its theatrical run somewhere between $650-700M.

It is inching towards $ 600 million worldwide. That seems a definite probability when Japan releases the movie in June. I also wonder whether there is still a chance for the movie to open in Venezuela ( where previouos XMen movies showed double-million results in the past), but we don't know whether internal problems in that country or simply a disagreement with theater exhibitors may have been the cause.

As LOGAN is close to winding down in cinemas, FORBES.COM projects its final box office results and its final standing among R-rated movies.

Reaching $611+ million, then, is not impossible but looks difficult.

In the end, though, it doesn't ultimately matter. As an R-rated action movie in the era of PG-13 dominance, Logan has already scored a major victory in the genre and in the X-Men cinematic history. It's going to finish north of $600 million, and it's one of the best-reviewed superhero films and among the most acclaimed X-Men movies. It also helps set up a new approach for the entire franchise going forward, and sends Hugh Jackman off in the finest and most honorable way imaginable.

So even if it does remain in fourth place, being beat for third place isn't a failure (especially when Jesus is the one who comes out ahead). And overall, the X-Men franchise holding the top spot and fourth spot on the R-rated list is pretty great for them, and it's changing how studios and audiences think about the genre.

Forbes thinks it might be difficult to surpass PASSION OF THE CHRIST in its third ranking among R-rated movies. Forbes thinks that LOGAN may find it difficult to reach at least $ 611 million.

I disagee ... It is very likely to surpass PASSION OF THE CHRIST and will likely reach the $615-$620 million range,once the box office results from JAPAN comes in after it opens on June 1. Hugh is even making an extra effort to promote the movie on its last outing by meeting the fans in Japan!

Four weeks ago, it became the fourth highest-grossing R-rated film ever with roughly $598M (behind The Passion of the Christ with $611.89M). This weekend finally pushed it to $603.2M. The movie brought in $381.6M internationally and $221.6M from North America, so about 63% of its total cume came from audiences abroad.

the television and film company controlled by Rupert Murdoch,
reported quarterly revenue that missed analysts' estimates,
largely weighed down by its filmed entertainment division.
Shares of the company, which is in midst of a $14.5 billion
bid to take control of UK-based pay-TV group Sky <SKYB.L>, fell
1.4 percent in extended trading on Wednesday.

"We remain confident the proposed transaction will be
approved by the end of the calendar year following a thorough
review process," Executive Chairmen Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch
said in a statement.

Fox said revenue in its film division fell nearly 3 percent
in the third quarter ended March 31.

Hugh Jackman starrer "Logan", part of the company's "X-Men"
franchise, released during the quarter and grossed around $606.2
million worldwide, compared with the $783.1 million that the
2016 hit "Deadpool" made, according to Box Office Mojo, a
website that tracks theater ticket sales.

However, Fox reported a better-than-expected profit in the
quarter.

Excluding items, Fox earned 54 cents per share. Analysts on
average had expected a profit of 48 cents per share.

Revenue in its cable division, which houses the FX and Fox
Sports channel among others, rose 2.1 percent to $4.02 billion,
accounting for more than half of total revenue.

The company said domestic advertising revenue in its cable
business was flat over the year-earlier period, as the impact of
higher ratings at Fox News was offset by lower revenues at the
National Geographic Partners businesses.

Fox News is facing a number of sexual harassment and
discrimination lawsuits, which have led to the departures of
its former chair Roger Ailes last summer, and most recently its
network co-president Bill Shine and star anchor, Bill O'Reilly.

The company, which also owns the Twentieth Century Fox movie
studio, said total revenue rose 4.6 percent to $7.56 billion.

Analysts on average had expected revenue of $7.63 billion,

Deadpool was released on a February ( blockbusters are usually not released during that month), which has leaner competition than the more competitive March ( which is now beginning to look like the start of the supposed summer season). In 2017, LOGAN found strong competition from KONG : Skull Island and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and the surprise critical and commercial hit GET OUT. Projections for LOGAN was probably lower than actual results, hence Fox reported that they achieved better than expected in the quarter.

We now enter June, regularly one of the three weakest months of the year, and the first weekend of the month is certainly going to be quite underwhelming.

>Beauty and the Beast will retain its position atop the box office for a seventh-consecutive weekend. After Sunday, Japan will become the #1 overseas market for the film, surpassing the U.K.

Disney's latest live-action iteration became the 31st film to ever exceed ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster milestone earlier this week (no official announcement yet), and now begins its journey of challenging Disney's other uber-blockbusters: Toy Story 3 (¥10.80 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (¥10.90 billion), Finding Nemo (¥11.00 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (¥11.63 billion), and finally, Alice in Wonderland (¥11.80 billion) -- which it'll need to beat to become the company's highest-grossing live-action film in the market.

>Logan had a pretty disappointing start on Friday, and its weekend business isn't looking much better. It's unlikely to reach even ¥200 million over the weekend frame itself, which will make reaching the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone rather difficult. However... the X-Men franchise hasn't been performing well as of late (despite the growth seen by most other superhero series'), and it might come in above some of its recent predecessors, so... there's that silver-lining.

I guess the likely worldwide box office for LOGAN will likely be in the $614- $616 million range. At present, it is now around $ 608 million.

It seems they continue to like their movie musicals...and mindless blockbusters like Fate of the Furious.
