SYNOPSIS
In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.
 
Note: this event takes place on the FOX lot. Please allow time to go through security at the gate. You will need to present your ID at the gate in addition to showing your union card at check-in. This is a joint event with the SAG Awards Nominating Committee and other groups. Please make sure you check in with the correct group to aviod being a no show.

This is an important event in the Awards Campaign --

*It is sponsored by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Members from this organization represent the largest voting bloc in the AMPAS. Very importantly, NOMINATIONS FOR AMPAS/OSCAR Acting Honors are voted by AMPAS members from this group solely. It is a complicated set of rules to determine the five nominees. For final voting, the whole AMPAS memberships from all the voting blocs/guilds vote on the awards.

SAG also makes its own awards. Nominations are announced on 12/13/17 and Wins on 1/21/18.

They also have a unique BEST ENSEMBLE AWARD/ BEST CAST AWARD ( no equivalent award at Oscar and Golden Globe levels). In addition, best lead actor and best lead actress as well as best supporting actor and best supporting actress awards are also given.


*This is FOX's pitch for LOGAN for major and below-the-line nominations/awards.

Depending on how THE GREATEST SHOWMAN is received critically-speaking and maybe also in terms of audience interest, there might be another SAG-AFTRA round for Hugh.


*It is being held at the FOX lot because the SAG-AFTRA has thousands of members.

I think Anne Thompson may be an excellent moderator for this event. I hope James Mangold does not generally monopolize the discussions ( as he sometimes is wont to do based on previous Q&A's - sorry, JM) and let Hugh ( who is equally articulate) give his point of view extensively in the discussion of the LOGAN film project.

20th Century Fox tentpoles Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes both marked the end of an era for beloved characters.


For Logan director James Mangold, the choice to end the stories of the X-Men franchise characters came from an artistic point of view. “We had a goal to make a more humane movie,” said Mangold told Dominic Patten at Deadline’s The Contenders event. “That Charles and Logan die at the end of the movies would be no big deal if it was any other movie. The question is loaded with the potency of ‘what are you doing to the franchise?'” To which he answered: “I don’t give a shit. I wanted to make a great movie.”

Sir Patrick Stewart, who has played Professor Charles Xavier since the franchise launched in 2000, recalled the moment when the end of his character hit him. “Hugh and I saw the movie with a big audience for the first time at the Berlin Film Festival,” he said. “We got into the last five minutes of the movie, and I found myself very emotional. I’ve always known that there was an intensity to the ending but not as strong as I found it sitting in the cinema.” He wasn’t alone. “Hugh was crying too,” Stewart said.

“There can be no better way ever of saying goodbye to this franchise than what I watched,” he added. “It was the perfect au revoir to X-Men.”

There were so many films under discussions for THE CONTENDERS event, that very short sessions were likely given to the awards-hopefuls!

Patrick brought a touch of class to the very first XMen movie -- and he has kept that commitment till the very end, with LOGAN!

I also think Pete Hammond hit it on the head when he called LOGAN an acting powerhouse! I know it is only the SAG which gives an Ensemble type of award -- but how can anyone beat the trio of Hugh/Patrick/Dafne??!

Hope the guild members come away very impressed with LOGAN, its filmmaker, and its cast ( especially Jackman)!

The movie deserves Oscar glory beside all those indie-types, biopic/historical dramas, coming-of-age story-telling! Why is AMPAS so myopic?!!

Interesting that they sent copies of the screenplay. They previously sent actual screeners of the film, right? This is good.

That is usually done. For review on Best Screenplay Award.

That was how I got my copy of the screenplay of LES MISERABLES even before I saw the movie. It was downloaded for the awards bodies (because Les Miserables opened on Christmas Day but the award bodies had to be pre-informed beforehand) and someone alerted us from our IMDB discussion group...and we took advantage of the link

They are giving LOGAN the chance for awards -- the screener, the screenplay, the new screenings ( I posted the link for various ones happening), and the Q&A with Hugh and James M ( Nov 10 at the FOX lot).

LOGAN and THE GREATEST SHOWMAN are presumably two completely different movies -- in themes, in format and genre, in character development, in actor's talent needed to deliver the roles!

Does anyone remember when an actor delivered two different outstanding acting portrayals in one awards season?

Now in their 9th year , the Governors Awards ceremony presented by the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts& Sciences followed suit with other kudos events so far this season and studiously avoided any reference to the sex harrassment scandals plauging the industry to instead put on a very good show celebrating the achievements that the Board of Governors deemed worthy of Oscar They gave out five of them.  Recipients  Agnes Varda, Donald Sutherland, Owen Roizman , Charles Burnett,and Alejandro G. Inarrritu, on behalf of his remarkable Carne y Arena virtural reality six minute installation,  all had their moments at the event the Academy also uses as a kickoff to an awards season that actually ends with them as well when the Oscars take place March 4th at the Dolby Theatre. 


These individuals, all very deserving as proven by the great clips show throughout the evening, set a high bar for whatever the Academy serves up four months from now. But make no mistake about it, this now traditional November ritual also serves another purpose and that is getting seen in a place that is basically one stop shopping for voters.  In November every one still thinks they can win which in one reason there is always such a starry turnout at this soiree. Any awards consultant worth their salt knows it is important to get their contenders front and center here in the Roy Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland for glad handing and just to be seen in a room loaded with voters. Every studio and distributor filled their tables with potential nominees...

20th Century Fox’s President of Distribution Chris Aronson took me over to talk to Hugh Jackman who was there not only for his great swan song in Logan , but also  The Great Showman in which  he plays P.T. Barnum in the Christmas release, both from Fox. “How lucky am I to get to play in both Logan  and a musical in the same year, ” exclaimed Jackman.
