Thanks, hughmanity You can feel how the project was such a personal commitment for Hugh and James ( and maybe Hutch Parker, too). How they approached it, how they put together their cinematic vision, how involved the small group of actors were in shining through the storytelling -- all elements that made it a very remarkable filmmaking achievement. These are the usual elements not of the usual blockbuster movies, but one with the artistic commitment one finds with smaller, almost indie-type movies -- barebones stories of humanity -- the ones that Oscar usually favors What an unexpected outcome that the movie, which Mangold and Jackman viewed inevitably as proprietorial to them, eventually caught the eye of both critics and audiences alike. To them, it was simply a wonderful piece of storytelling and appreciation of the characters that told the final saga of the conflicted Wolverine. It was never intended from the beginning as an Oscar-worthy candidate ( people are stumped why it was released in late winter, as far away from the awards season as possible)...but the sincerity and honesty in telling that final tale of a man whose story has been told many times in the past must have set in. The creative team simply found that magical formula that let the final tale of Logan be told in such a gut-wrenching way and unexpectedly also showed the way to his ultimate redemption. It is hard to describe adequately how fans feel about this movie , but LOGAN turned out to be the most remarkable and memorable telling of the tale of one clawed mutant who found his way to the hearts of its audience. I remember how hushed the audience was as we saw the movie end -- nobody was moving and leaving, people were just trying to come to terms with this final story of Wolverine. And I saw that happen at least twice, in an IMAX theatre! PS Hugh does know how to communicate --the audience in this screening were members of the Screen Actors Guild, so some of his shared feelings and remarks spoke directly to the audience's appreciation of the the artistic motivations of an actor! I need to watch it again Jo

I posted this originally on the OFFICIAL REVIEW thread but it seems also logical to include this among award consideration discussions -- I cannot comprehend how a group of supposedly artistic-minded, humanity-infused, and culturally-aware group of voters can ignore such a beautiful expression of the human spirit vis-a-vis efforts towards perfect mimicry of historical persons and historical dramas ( You are better off reading about what actually happened from the pages of history!) and many movies that are obvious efforts to showcase political correctness. Just because it has been labelled a "superhero movie"? But aren't the lessons they teach us all about feats ( and virtues sometimes) that deserve praise and sometimes even emulation? Why can't superhero movies, done very well, compete on the same level of artistic perfection as other dramatic movies? It's really about stories of life, even if they sometimes have heroes who wear claws ( normal people also have them, except they are mostly hidden ). Jo

At one of the Hollywood roundtable discussions -- with Timothee and Jake.

Cute photo. Nice to see Timothee and Jake in such good company.
I saw Timothee in an Off-Broadway play opposite Robert Sean Leonard a couple of seasons ago. I'd never heard of him but was impressed by his performance as a student at a snooty prep school in New England. I'm glad he appreciates the Hugh connection.

The Mangold interview is being reprinted here --
It is very long ( the article will be broken up for easier reading pace) ...but if you take a leisurely way of reading everything, much can be learned and much can be appreciated on how his movies have proven that Mangold has followed his gospel of filmmaking through his varied career!
Take the time ... maybe read some parts of it initially... the come back and finish reading the article. It is very insightful and also personal to the filmmaker -- and it is very thoughtful, informative, and makes one appreciate why a film auteur works the way he does.
Quite a few references to his initiatives and motivations in making LOGAN work. Those parts of the interview are particularly appreciated!

EDIT: The valid link disappears after a while. To get to the screenplay, please check the link to the main article -- cinephiliabeyond.org/inspired-try-things-miracles-happen-someone-takes-chance-conversation-james-mangold/On the first paragraph, please look for the link, via the words : "online premiere of Logan's screenplay"From the page, you can actually download the screenplay for easier reference every now and then. *********************** I have not re-read it yet... But I did go back to the last two pages -- And without even thinking it -- my eyes well up again
There is something about the written word that has a different level of emotional impact!Jo

A LOGAN fan presents his proposal for awards honors --
Maybe he is not aware that FOX itself has already made its official recommendation for Oscar consideration for LOGAN? And that in addition to Hugh and Patrick, that Dafne Keen has also been recommended for consideration, in the best supporting actress category?

Reprinted from a Jake Gyllenhaal Fan Page --
A little disappointing -- I was expecting a more insightful exchange among these actors, who are potential Oscar Nominees for this year. Fairly superficial discussions on how the themes of the movies ( for which they were being cited) were developed and how it drew such outstanding performances from the actors around the table. Their roles ( for which they are being lauded) are memorable ones in their career -- I would think that the actor's viewpoint on the kind of challenge presented by the role and how he rose up to it would have been very informative and will help rationalize why they deserve an Oscar nomination.
Hugh did not even have a chance to discuss what made a movie like LOGAN rise beyond he challenge of a typical superhero movie. Nor did he have a chance to discuss how an actor can straddle two very different genre roles within a short span of time!
Also, no discussions on what they think of what's happening to the industry ( film quality, audience interest, the threat of the streaming industry Like Netflix and Amazon and how it affects them as actors, new challenges to actors, etc), rather than simply touching on the scandal of the day.
I miss the kind of discussion like we saw with the Times Talks Conversation handled by NYTimes Patrick Healy with Jackman and Rickson. There were quite a few gems worth listening to in that session... I think the lead discussants, presumably from the L.A. Times, could have handled the session so much better. It seemed like they were just shooting the breeze, so to speak!

Because touching the scandal of the day was probably the only thing that interested to L.A. Times. I suppose they put amplifiers on the microphones when Hugh spoke about this topic and did it first. There is a huge craving to witch-hunt in the air, I have also noticed the notorious herd of haters in pole position to make loathsome comparisons between Hugh and the top names risen to the headlines, especially ONE of these names. The final part of this session, Gyllenhaal praises addressed to Jackman, is the best answer to those who make innuendo and even direct accusations without knowing the target of their slander. Get ready, in every interviews promoting The Greatest Showman there will be very little about the movie and a lot of questions on the scandal of the day.

Hugh is a generous soul -- hosting Jake Gyllenhaal's Oscar-potential movie STRONGER, when he himself is trying to promote the chances of LOGAN!
