Environmentalists tried to stop the Dutch GP from coming to Zandvoort for years.

They said the event would endanger Zandvoort's dune reserve and counter its effort to fight climate change.

So race organizers implemented a unique incentive-based system to combat littering.

Here's how it works 👇

When fans arrive at the track, they are given a token to exchange for a plastic cup when buying a drink.

If you bring your plastic cup back when buying drink #2, you are given another plastic cup in exchange.

If not, you had to pay 1 euro for a new cup.

What about your last cup when you know you aren't getting another drink?

When you bring your last cup back, you are handed a token with a code you can enter online to win prizes.

The result?

70,000 attendees leave no trash left behind.

Race officials also close public roads into Zandvoort.

That requires attendees to take public transportation or bikes to the race.

The result is 98% of attendees traveling via bike or train, with just 2% coming via personal vehicle.

So the lesson is simple:

The battle between environmentalists and event organizers is draining, often including lawsuits and protests.

But incentives run the world, and this is just another creative way of using them to drive outcomes.

It'll be interesting to see if these strategies are more widely adopted.

Welcome to European sports! Both mentioned initiatives have been established at the majority of sports events in Europe decades ago.

By the way, you have to pay a deposit for every drink you purchase in all Dutch supermarkets This system is established in most parts of Europe

For F-1 fans --

Max Verstappen recorded one of the best qualifying laps in F-1 history. It wasn't simply the speed but how he maneuvered the Japanese Suzuka track known for its beautiful "Esses" - the road winds like the Letter "S" and there are a few of them.

One former racing driver was gasping with admiration after the qualifying races while another racer noted that he seemed to be carefully planning every meter of his drive. Beautiful to watch!
The funny part is his race engineer dared him to go to a certain speed -- and he delivered almost to the consternation of the Team Principal - he wanted the car delivered with all 4 wheels intact at finish line

At the end, the Team Principal complimented his driver : That was sublime!

Super Max replied : That was enjoyable

Background to this: Michael Schumacher, who has been ill since his skiing accident years ago, was a family friend because he was once the driving partner of Jos Verstappen (Max's Dad). The families used to take holidays together. They would also go karting with very young Max with his Dad and Michael with daughter Gina & son Mick.

The photo was taken one time when Michael visited some place were Max was there with his Dad.

He won the Qatar Grand Prix today -- but what a physically-demanding race!

One driver had to retire because he could no longer stand the heat & humidity in the dessert. I understand that inside the cockpit, the temperature can go up by another 20 degrees.

The second place winner could hardly stand. In the cool-down room, he simply lay down on the floor.

Max was dripping wet from the water he poured on himself before stepping up the podium.

And this was a night race!

A 26 year-old sports champion makes it to the cover of TIME!

Not for what he stands for ( others make it to the TIME cover for important universal issues) -- Max Verstappen makes it to a TIME cover on pure sporting merit.

I knew him when he first entered Formula One as a teenager ( the youngest ever at 17) and he was an impetuous driver. I thought then that he needed maturing.

He is now recently turned 26 and has 3 world championships to his belt. He has broken so many records this year that every race, a new record is announced, with the most recent was one that was more than 50 years old -- the % of wins to total races during the year. Personally, I find him candid and funny, down-to-earth and not at all conscious that he is a sports icon and at such a young age. When he was small, he used to be on the lap of one former champion, his Dad's racing partner. He used to call him "Uncle Michael"... Yes, that Michael Schumacher!

Btw, he speaks very fluent English, Dutch and German!

Another interesting side to him --

He is currently dating ( they live together in Monaco) a very beautiful model who was raised in Europe but the daughter of Brazilian F-1 champion Nelson Piquet. She has a very young daughter from a previous relationship. The little girl is now famous because she would often play with "Maxie" while he is busy on his simulation play machine. Everyone knows the little girl whom Max calls "P" ( for Penelope") as she would often surprise him when his video is open. He makes a great stepdad even at his fairly young age.

Brad Pitt is making a $300 Million movie on Formula One racing -- he is supposed to be an aging driver who will be mentoring a black driver to be the next champion.

Ironically, the real champion standing next to Damon Idris ( next to Pitt) is the reigning 3-time champion Max Verstappen (won 61 races while only 26 years old)... who is Dutch-Belgian and very fluent in English/Dutch/German & some French. Does Pitt come out as similarly cosmopolitan?




Will Brad Pitt make a credible F-1 driver?

Looks like it will be a bit woke - as the only successful mixed race champion ( half-black& half-White) is Lewis Hamilton ( who night feature in the movie and/or help produce this movie)

Interesting discussion re language heard on radio messages in F-1. What the drivers communicate to their engineers/teams during actual race are picked up and later broadcast. This has become an issue. I have written a few messages, including using the example of Deadpool & Wolverine

MV should be leading by example based on his position in the sport. Seeing as he play videos games until 3am though, shows his lack of maturity and repsect.

Radio comments should not even be broadcast. F1 is a sport, not a dramatic movie. Pay attention to the racing, not the emotions that drive each driver to heightened performances. Let us be mature about this whole thing!

The radio messages are a part of the sport. Its being included in a lot more sport and games these days. They know the radio is monitored and some drivers use it to their advantage. Max needs to start to grow up and lead by example. Claims hes super cool when hes not.

Maybe it's the supposed F1 followers who should grow up?Move to other sports?Been an F-1 fan since late90's&gone to2Monaco GP&1Montreal GP - I've not lost love for the sport but bothered by pitch towards a younger crowd who view F1 as entertainment not a pinnacle of sport.

F1 is a business and is entertainment. You wont get the crowds or followers unless they did evolve to this. I have watched F1 since 85 and been to a few races too. Adelaide 90 was a festival and massive crowds. So it has to evolve with new gen fans or it will just die.

Maybe go beyond the AUS GP&try to see it inEurope where it was born.I never look at it as entertainment-the thrills,the eye-popping scenes,sometimes the disappointments-unfolding before our eyes&ears.What I like about it is not having to listen to broadcasters w/their favoritism.

This is so because everyday language is also evolving.If F-1 is more about politeness,then it will no longer be the sport we love!Stop the radio messages being publicized then.I recall some of the more famous ones(Kimi's "Let me be!").Everyone was repeating it&its sense of humor!

I like Oscar P - he is more the quiet type. I also like Max (second only to Schumi in my scale of F1 heroes) because of his candor & love for the sport. Both Oscar & Max race because they love the sports...not for the publicity that some drivers crave. But to each his own!
