Lyrics to THIS IS ME -- genius.com/Keala-settle-this-is-me-lyricsYou have to look at the trailer at the same time for best effect -- from the link, the trailer is on the same page ( upper right-hand corner). Best viewed together -- it makes sense why THIS IS ME was used in the first trailer. It looks like the website is going to put together the lyrics(and maybe the scenes) of the songs. For now, only THIS IS ME has been included. Jo

To get an excellent cross-section of the reaction to the trailers -- check out the feedback section of the official trailer uploaded by FOX.
I am not too keen on the reaction from ATC and BWW because the theatre fans seem to have their favorite agendas to pursue ( i.e., they hate musicals unless it is from the theatre and played on Broadway/they think their kin, e.g., Keala, is not treated properly because she doesn't get billing rights, the movie is hiding the fact that it is a musical, etc)...Not sure either about the reactions from bloggers ( print or YouTube) - some inject too much of their personal biases one way or another, instead of more objective comments.
Some reactions are funny, some are hateful (but never vicious), some have own agendas/advocacies to pursue, some are just confused... but most are waiting for the musical to show up on Christmas Day!
*Is that Hugh Jackman? Why does he look so young? I thought he's in his 60's, based on LOGAN?/He looks as young as Zac /HJ is getting younger
*Hugh Jackman -- an actor who has never portrayed someone like his own nature!/this is his reward from FOX for those phenomenal 17 years!/I hear this is his passion project/Is this what he did after he got fired from LOGAN?/What - he gave up Wolverine for this??/not very often that you see an actor as versatile as Hugh Jackman!/All I see is LOGAN!/He is Wolverine forever/The Greatest X-Man!
*Oscar talk -- the movie could be up for Best Picture/Hugh is going to win because the AMPAS will camouflage that it is really for a comic book movie performance which they do not want to admit/
*Time and place -- this is what Wolverine did before he found the XMen in the first movie! It should be inserted somewhere in that opening montage in Origins: Wolverine!/La La Logan!/Before he became Weapon X
*Er...The Greatest Snowman - LOL!
*Sequel to The Prestige! It is the Great Danton coming back to life!/One of Angiers's clones escaped to set up a circus!
*Moulin Rouge 2! -- the songs are treated like in MR/I like the similarity to MR/Love MR!
*Is this a musical ?? -- only one song/the song is terrible/the song is excellent/who dat singer - she is terrible/that is Keala/ why are they not saying outright that this is a musical/Can't wait!?/Tiny voice: Hate musicals!/Why isn't the music from Cy Coleman?/Where can I find the song?/Why mention of Pasek&Paul
*Why is a modern, pop tone used for a period film?? -- Hamilton, anyone??!!!
*Who is dat singing?? -- terrible/wonderful/Keala!/the bearded lady??/
*Zac -- time to do serious compared to comedy/is that what Troy Bolton did after he graduated from high school?/ hope this is not a continuation of his record of flops/he looks like he can act/like the Zac&Zendaya romance!
*Zendaya -- looking good!/great agent - with Spider-Man and now this!/ supposed to have done her own trapeze act??/cotton-candy hair/elegant lady/Disney princess -ugh!/how is she shorter than Zac - impossible!/
*Michelle W -- first time I have seen her smile in a movie/happy that this is going to be a happy movie for her, compared to all her previous sad roles.
*Best line -- "No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else"
*Activists to the fore - down with this movie -- they are praising the circus which went against animal rights!/Movie with liberal-ist thinking
*Anti-Barnum -- why glorify a man who was nothing but a huckster??/ Don't go to Bridgesport!/
*Sentimental -- why only now -- when the Barnum circus has closed *sad face*
*Production values -- looks good/period pieces are good/great visuals/ love that dance on the rooftop/didn't like CGIs(er...which one??)/new director - can he do well/ new director is doing the Japanese anime Naruto next/
*Christmas release date -- perfect timing!??/ TGS vs Star Wars/
I really enjoyed reading through all of them -- it is the best proof of how audiences will likely react to the issue of whether they would like to see the movie or not! Great symmetry - although the Yeas are much more than the Nays! I will add more when I remember the other memorable comments.

Hey, do you guys realize that we did not hear Hugh sing even snippets of a solo song in the first trailer??
When will we hear his singing voice from the movie?? Six months??!! Outrageous!

Ok - here is the reaction of one film blogger/reviewer ( who does NOT sound like some who are too-full-of-themselves ) -- His comment after seeing the first few scenes " This is going to be more dramatic than I would have thought" hopefully will be the same reactions from others. And if the movie really has important dramatic highlights to show -- that would add to favorable expectations from critics reviews...and lend credence to Oscar talk for the movie and Hugh Jackman! Jo

Here's the trailer writeup for our local ( Philippine) audiences -- pop.inquirer.net/2017/06/hugh-jackman-zac-efron-michelle-williams-zendaya-greatest-showman-teaser-trailer/Now that is the tragic part for me We won't get to see it here till the third week of January! That's because the local film festival which only allows exhibition of Philippine-made films for a two-week period from Christmastime to first week of January ( and sometimes extend a little longer)! Can someone please send me a total package -- airfare to USA/hotel/US visa, as mine is expiring in November/I'll take care of the movie tickets Er..maybe look for other alternatives Jo

Jo, some of those comments are really funny. Hugh is supposed to have been "fired from LOGAN" ("??). And some people think because he looked worn out (as per the script and makeup) in LOGAN, they somehow CGI'd his face to look "like 2005." Maybe my favorite comment is "Don't go to Bridgeport!" Ellen

Giggle -- I was giggling when I read the actual comments Btw, one commenter who posted on several uploads on the trailer ( different sites) : His name is J.Munoz and he said he feels superior because he has seen the movie/he also posted elsewhere that he saw an early screening but cannot post any reviews - but that he could not wait to see it again! He wasn't really bragging to irritate people - he wanted to share his impressions ( presumably favorable) but the restrictions bound him -- but by saying that he could not wait to see it again means he is very impressed! There were other funny comments ( I could not remember them, but found myself very amused -- even the negative ones because they were more playful. But I thought this set of reactions are probably the more reliable guess as to how the movie would be received, based on the first trailer! One thing I totally did not expect is the mixed reaction to Keala singing THIS IS ME -- but the best reply to those complaining that it should sound like a period piece in order to fit the story in the past was : HAMILTON!!! So, there Re people wondering why the musical aspect was not that well-emphasized ( no real songs except for those bits on This Is Me in one or two scenes) -- I think maybe the marketing people wanted to establish the main narrative on the man in the biopic first before they move on to the musical aspects of song and dance in the next trailer ( we hope!). Btw, there is one comment which I read elsewhere -- Why is the main cast all pretty ?? And it was meant to be a sincere comment Btw, I found the following video review of the trailer to be more fair -- good research on Barnum himself, scrutinizing the main cast and their suitability in the storyline and what they can contribute, focusing on Hugh's varied expressions ( they even call one scene as definitely Hugh's inspired or inspirational moment ), talking about the musical aspects ( or what they can find of it), etc.

Not exactly new news ( as the contest was already part of the official site of the movie) -- but here is further confirmation from ATC ( via Ann) -- Here's the official website of the movie, with the contest details -- www.foxmovies.com/movies/the-greatest-showman

I didn't know one could look at NEWEST COMMENTS on YouTube uploads.
Here are the most interesting ones -- in response to criticisms on the trailer song choice, on the real-life character of Barnum, and how people should appreciate new trailers/new movies --

For the accountants/bookkeepers among us --
In the first scene of the trailer -- it shows P.T.Barnum doing some clerical work. That machine he was operating was an old-fashioned, mechanical adding machine. A far cry from modern calculators/computing machines! He seemed to be tallying invoices (and filing them the old-fashioned way) and operating his adding machine ( you will need a bit of muscle, not just fingers to operate them) - he was likely a bookkeeper for the company he was working for.
I have to check it out -- Barnum must have been a real bookkeeper in the early days.
I wonder where they get all these props -- that scene seemed so real of the atmosphere of big offices then?

Now, this is the kind of reaction to a trailer that we are hoping for -- no prescribed notions, no advocacies to pursue, no comparisons to other movies (except to Moulin Rouge, but in a relevant point) -- just the merits of the actual trailer and whether it excited audiences and raised anticipation levels for the forthcoming film or not! Remarks are spontaneous and well-reasoned out. Even an appreciation of the new music written by recent Oscar winners was not lost on them as an excellent selling point! And they're coming from a totally fresh perspective as they have no idea what the movie is really all about, except knowing about the singing talent of Jackman and Efron and all about Barnum being the founder of the bigtop circus.
Also, check out the feedback section.

I know it is totally premature -- as the movie will only be released on December 25. We have seen only the first trailer in reality. Reviews will likely come in around the time of the film release. And we know how early the Golden Globes have announced their relevant dates. But we are all hopeful for this movie! This is the OSCARs schedule -- In comparison, here is the timetable for the GOLDEN GLOBES ( which many think are good predictors of OSCAR favorites) --

Jeffrey Wells of HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE has put THE GREATEST SHOWMAN among his top 9 bets for Best Picture OSCAR nominations. He has uploaded the trailer and he asked for "honest" comments from his usual audience of film buffs and pseudo film buffs. www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2017/06/honest-impressions-requested/#disqus_thread *Do these supposed film buffs think only very high drama can qualify for a film to be a winner! A film can appeal to various emotions and make an audience very appreciative of the story and how the story is told! What - they only want intellectual fodder ?? LOL - time for reality check for these pseudo film buffs. Would they rather find the high drama in a film about an unknown ( to most people) British dressmaker for royalty - because DDLewis is portraying him? Wouldn't the life of a famous/infamous American cultural personality be of greater interest to these presumably fans "from" ( not necessarily "of") La La Land, USA? Barnum is an Americana story - why not explore how the movie will unravel that tale...than, say, another persona from across the pond ( if not the British dressmaker, maybe Churchill in another British tale called The Darkest Hour?)? Shouldn't diversity, rather than exclusivity, be the refrain that should be heard when talking of mass entertainment. Bah! *What is there about the music that alienates those who have watched the trailer?? It is actually very suitable to the film theme being presented and visually represented! The theme of inclusion! The theme of rising beyond's perceived personal shortcomings or adversities. And what is wrong with a contemporary beat for a period piece movie? I guess they have not related it to the modern age hit of period piece story-telling set to rap music ( winning the Pullitzer and the Tony and the Grammy, aka Hamilton)! And a celebrated Broadway voice singing THIS IS ME! I guess many of them have never heard of Broadway-of-the-modern-age! *Ok - so they don't like Jackman. Is it because he was WOLVERINE for 17 years?? But they know he has been in quite a few films of high drama...and even in an award contender musical ( Les Miserables). Er...maybe they're entitled to their own opinion, but there seems to be negativity toward HJ because he doesn't belong to the "school of brooding" acting...or eccentric Hollywood personas! One mentioned PRISONERS --but that was HJ at his most explosive dramatic best! Or is it because HJ is too good to be true End of rant Jo

"Honest" or not, OUCH! Some of these hurt. I think, unfortunately, the controversy of how Barnum is portrayed is going to remain. I do have to say that I am surprised at the negativity towards the song. I liked it the minute I heard it last year watching the video of Hugh's performance in Australia. Sorry, Hughmanity - I expanded my rant ... You may have to re-quote my post Ha - I am not accepting those negative opinions! I have seen so much of the reactions on social media and the internet in the last two days to know that the movie itself, as represented by the trailer, is impressive to most people and has been well-received. The negativity towards THIS IS ME, is personally speaking, one more of ignorance than anything else! Listen to the lyrics and it fits 100% to the theme of the first trailer! And singing it with a contemporary beat -- hey, these people are out of tune with present-day reality! The younger people ( I have read all the comments on the Facebook Page of the movie -- and almost all want to see the movie - on its first day even!) are impressed! I see a very strong identification with other social media platforms! Fox should be happy, as that is the market demos being courted On an aside, I also do not fully subscribe to Oscar recognition as the final and only arbiter of an actor's capabilities! There has been so much politics whispered openly about what happens behind the scenes in the past few years that it turns me off, too. Let us just say that the golden statuette looks good on an actor's mantel ... and gives him bragging rights about the prefix ("Academy-award-winning") before his name On the other hand, I am appreciative of the AMPAS leadership's move to expand the membership as fast as possible, to have more inclusivity in the voting. A few years back, a membership survey showed that it is very predominantly male, over 60 years old and white -- which, to many, explained why they keep voting for the same talent/favorites over and over ( During the time of Les Miserables, over at IMDB one member of our big discussion group told us that his parents were members of both AMPAS and BAFTA and that he sometimes would sit in for them during special screenings -- he told us a few things behind the scenes about the campaigning going on, and even shared how the "elderly members" have already defacto organized fan clubs for certain acting talents - LOL). It was just announced that almost 800 new members from all branches ( not just actors but other creative branches) have been given invitation ( Btw, two brilliant directors from my country, the Philippines, have been invited : one won a Best Director award at Cannes and the other won Best Picture at Venice). If the critics do not like the movie, well and good! But at least they have seen the entire movie and may have a basis for their judgment ( regardless of whether I agree with it or not)... I did like THE FOUNTAIN despite all the brickbats thrown its way ( although I must confess that my heart sank when I read the very first review at the Venice Film Festival)-- and it has not deterred me from watching it again and again every now and then. And look at what's happened -- it has enjoyed a critical renaissance and some say that it is auteur Aronofsky's best movie! And how about that story from the festival about another famous auteur Alfonso Cuaron challenging a booing-audience member to a fistfight because he thought it was disrespectful to a great film and a great filmmaker...And many, many years later, Darren Aronofsky was invited to be the Chairman of the Judges for film at the Venice Biennale!
