20th Century Fox has set a week of sing-along screenings of its Hugh Jackman musical “The Greatest Showman,” starting on Friday in 300 theaters around the country.

The sing-along version will display the songs’ lyrics on screen, allowing viewers to perform with the movie’s score. The tracks are penned by Academy Award-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

agle: Since “The Greatest Showman” is your first musical, who did you look to for advice and support? Michael [Gracey, the director]? Hugh?

RF: Oh, definitely Hugh! I got unconditionally great encouragement and support from him. I’m an actress, not a singer, and she [Jenny Lind] was at that time the most famous singer in the world. So I’ve got to act that. I’ve got to make that song [“Never Enough”] my song. When we were rehearsing Hugh was always there, cheering me on, fortifying me. And Benj and Justin [songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul] were always on set, so if I had any questions or thoughts about interpretation they were readily at hand.

Interesting to know that her scenes were filmed at BAM.

Another actress who must have also walked to work was MIchelle Williams, who lives in Brooklyn.

At some point, Hugh shares the background and what happens during the final workshop for the movie ( watched by some 60 FOX execs or so). If Hugh had not sung in that workshop... could the FOX execs have taken their time approving the film project...until they see Hugh doing some of the numbers? Btw, from I have heard, the Opening/Closing number in the movie called THE GREATEST SHOW had not yet been written at that point.





Here's another Manila visitor, David Archuleta ( former American Idol finalist), who is a favorite concert artist here singing the song that Hugh sang some parts of -- At around 1'52" or so, David sings the lines " Nandito ako....", which the Filipino interviewer tells Hugh is part of the melodrama that we inject into some of our love songs

Family circus

In some circus scenes of Golden Globe winner “The Greatest Showman,” you might glimpse Hugh Jackman’s children, Ava and Oscar. About P.T. Barnum he says: “I read 37 books about him.”

37 volumes about P.T. Barnum?! G. Washington probably had less. “The guy was smart. He bought lots of real estate.”

Just as smart, Jackman, who hasn’t worked in a week, wants back on Broadway but, he sighs, “it takes five years to put a musical together.”

Is it just me -- or are they ramping up publicity for the movie once more because it is turning out to be a real audience favorite! It is almost unbelievable to see so many social media posts talking of super-multiple viewings of the movie -- a TITANIC movie on a smaller scale ( but with similarity as to how audiences have responded)!

I can understand the articles and podcasts on Keala and THIS IS ME because of the forthcoming Oscar nominations?

But why did Hugh come back to ELLEN and will be appearing on THE TALK about a month after the film was released?

Moi, aussi - Marion! I liked the movie THE GOOD YEAR with Russell Crowe set in Provence ( from stories by Peter Mayle -loved his books on Provence) a lot - it showed that she can be a very versatile actress ( I did see her as Edith Piaf in that biopic La Vie En Rose, but it was Edith whose voice was used for the singing) - including comedy.

Hugh should start learning real French given that he has French relations who live there...and the French would love to hear him being interviewed in full French. Hope the movie goes over very well in France. They were not very supportive of the English-based film adaptation of Les Miserables!

That was a CANAL TV clip - maybe I can look for it on our cable connection to that channel. As if I could understand it I need subtitles! LOL!

We're on the late side in releasing the movie here in the Philippines ( although we will open the movie in a close time frame with China and Japan) and is now on an advance screening basis ( surprisingly, on a nationwide basis - never heard of that happening here although I may not have known of other movies doing the same thing) , our cinemas will only open its doors formally on January 31. However, the publicity is already starting to ramp up!

Here is an article focusing on Zac Efron -- he has visited here not just to promote another movie and sample local culture - he also went trekking up our most famous volcano ( not Pinatubo, which was the 20th century's most destructive explosion in the world) with his Dad and narrated his experience in the countryside ... By the way, this volcano ( Mayon) is now on Alert 3 level because it is showing strong restlessness now ( including lava flow)...but then we are a land of volcanoes and seashores!

When I saw the movie yesterday again ( I had alrady seen it a week earlier as I was lucky to get an invite to a super-advance screening by local sponsors) -- two young people, probably a couple, were singing REWRITE THE STARS on the way out

Can you discuss the soaring music in the movie, which has a contemporary feel to it, even though it is set in the 1800s?

The basic theory behind the music is that if Barnum was alive today, he would embrace what is new and exciting. So the idea of doing old-school music didn’t feel right. For me, the film meant retraining my voice for two or three years and I went to a different singing teacher, which was very hard because I’ve had the same singing teacher for 10 years. But Justin (Paul) and Benj (Pasek) said, “I’d like you to see this person who works in the pop world.” I spent many sessions in the recording studio. (Laughs) I’ll tell you one story which is self-deprecating but true. I remember our director walking into one of our late-night sessions in the studio and he was listening to a tape I’d done. I’m in the booth and he comes on the microphone, and he goes: “This sounds incredible, fantastic,” with genuine surprise in his voice. I can hear the engineer saying: “Michael, there were a lot of takes”…and there were a lot of takes! (Laughs)
