About The Greatest Showman, If you go on Twitter and read the high number of liking tweets from the users, you can get an idea that this film was seen by a massive audience of young people, not “just” older women. Film critics are often overwhelmed by their personal dislikes, they are never reliable in their judgments and the audience does not give a damn about their personal dislikes, especially the smart ones. People love to decide with their own heads and would prefer impartiality and professionalism, qualities of which film critics are largely lacking. Those who criticized this film did not see it with their hearts because they must have died inside.

Most critics forget the number one reason people go to movies…to be entertained. And that’s why critically-reviled audience pleasers always do well and leave them scratching their heads when those films are hits and the acclaimed yet depressing drama flops. The Greatest Showman is a fun musical with great music. The soundtrack is the number one seller on iTunes. Hope it does well internationally too.

Jumanji, Greatest Showman box office grosses surge over New Year's Day


The award for biggest gainer of the holiday period, however, belongs to Hugh Jackman’s grand scale musical The Greatest Showman, which climbed 136 percent from its minuscule $8.8 million opening weekend to a healthier $20.8 million four-day total ($54.3 million overall). Strong word of mouth (the film boasts an A grade on CinemaScore), 310 extra theaters added to its location count, and a consistent marketing push throughout the holidays are likely responsible for the film’s robust expansion.

Showman will register about $ 4.2 million for Friday, for a current cumulative domestic box office of $ 67.2 million ( forecast by Sunday is a cumulative amount of $ 77 million, unless the frigid weather discourages weekend movie-going).

It is only a very modest increase but the number of theater screens has been increased further by another 26 screens. It looks like Fox believes that SHOWMAN'S box office outlook is positive going forward? Current trends seem to indicate the domestic box office may reach $ 100 million within another week or two?

It looks like Fox got that Christmas miracle. The Greatest Showman continued to show remarkable staying power, earning another $4.175 million (-22%) on its third Friday, setting the stage for a $14.125m (-9%) third weekend and whopping $75m 19-day total. So much for those Tintin comparisons, as this one will have already earned 8.5x its opening weekend by tomorrow, so this one is playing more like The Emperor's New Groove or Jumanji.

It's now pretty likely that The Greatest Showman will top $100m domestic, which is arguably what Fox and friends were hoping for with the P.T. Barnum biopic. Yes, the Hugh Jackman/Zac Efron live-action musical cost $84m to produce, but that's where overseas figures come in. And the legs are exactly what Fox was hoping for, especially after a mediocre opening weekend...

Both Deadline and Variety predicted a cumulative domestic figure of $ 77 million by Sunday, $ 2 million over what Scott Mendelson predicted...even if all used the same prediction of $ 14.0+ million for the weekend. Hope Mendelson is wrong

Props again to 20th Century Fox’s The Greatest Showman this weekend which started very slow, but is lasting long with $13.8M third weekend, -11% and a running cume of $76.9M.... It too has a sophisticated, older audience draw which means they take their time heading to the cinema. The pic’s soundtrack is also No. 1 on iTunes.

Great openings were seen in Russia ($3.7M, 2.6X bigger than La La Land) and Germany ($2.2M, best non-franchise musical bow ever). Holds were strong as well with the UK down just 5% to cume $13.5M, Mexico off by just 9% for a $7.2M cume and Spain up by 30% to tally $3.9M so far.

Liam Neeson’s “The Commuter” was arriving with about $12 million, fighting for sixth with the fourth weekend of Hugh Jackman’s “The Greatest Showman” and the second weekend of “Insidious: The Last Key.”

SHOWMAN, now on its 4th weekend, will be fighting it out with a new Neeson thriller movie and a second-weekend horror movie (Insidious). Since when did the musical genre fight strongly with an action or a horror movie
It is also a movie that has been in theaters much longer ( it has legs!)

The movie continues to be a box office wonder --

Based on estimates for the 4-day weekend, TGS is 4th after Jumanji, The Post with newly-expanded box office, The Commuter a new wide release...and for the weekend, we have overtaken The Last Jedi, the previous new release Insidious, and other new releases Paddington 2 and Proud Mary. Overall, TGS has already overtaken PitchPerfect3 in overall domestic box office.

Greatest Showman has reduced its number of theaters ( presumably to accommodate the expansion for The Post) and this usually happens for the 4th weekend, but it still mustered great numbers.

Greatest Showman is now only $ 2.2 million away from $ 100 million ( the box office magic number ). By Wednesday ( it was released on a Wednesday 4 weeks ago), there is a good chance the movie will hit that number!

The paper-thin movie, which runs 105-minutes and is almost entirely composed of lively musical numbers, is essentially the equivalent of cake, cookies and cheesy garlic bread for dinner, but in a portion size that won't give you a stomach ache. Come what may, in this grim times, when even the new Star Wars movie is a grim reminder of our current political fate, Greatest Showman is the very definition of cinematic escapism.

C'mon, Mr. Menselson, admit that you did not fully appreciate its cinematic vision and how well the movie executed that! So many people, across all demos and national boundaries, have expressed pleasure and joy in the movie! Why insist that there is only one way to make a movie and make it resonate with the public? In the final analysis, it is public support ( whether through the box office or words of praise) which counts the most in appreciating art in any form!
