Interesting well-thought out and grounded comment on why THE GREATEST SHOWMAN is breaking out despite the critics negativity! From the feedback section of DEADLINE.COM which mentioned that it is older women which are fuelling the swelling of support ( actually, very arguable, because Deadline based it only on the sample group for the CinemaScore purposes) -- Which drew the following rejoinder -- LOL- Paging Scott Mendelson

Estimated box office receipts, as of Sunday, December 31, 2017, per Box Office Mojo --
Based on the figures provided by Variety on its production budget, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN has hit that level in terms of its receipts for 12 days. However, this is not the actual return to the studio as theater distributors share in the receipts.

Box office appeal is enhanced by favorable reporting from a mass entertainment site like EW.com -- ew.com/movies/2018/01/01/new-years-day-box-office-jumanji/EW.com is not yet aware how strong social media as well as very favorable audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB have boosted the attraction of SHOWMAN!

Per Box Office Mojo :
It looks like TGS has maintained its better daily take, per Tuesday box office, compared to Pitch Perfect --
On a worldwide basis, it is closing in on the first $ 100 million mark --

Updated projections for the weekend are even better than the first forecast -- from Deadline.com : deadline.com/2018/01/insidious-the-last-key-last-jedi-jumanji-weekend-box-office-1202236009/Er... we'll take the $$$$ -- Shape of Water can take the (Oscar) gold Just kidding -- we want both! Who knows, if word of mouth (described as " very warm") becomes even hotter -- maybe the voters will be convinced that audiences have a point! And that they are voting with their feet, not with acid in their (critic) pens! Jo

www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2018-01-05&view=1day&p=.htmShowman will register about $ 4.2 million for Friday, for a current cumulative domestic box office of $ 67.2 million ( forecast by Sunday is a cumulative amount of $ 77 million, unless the frigid weather discourages weekend movie-going). It is only a very modest increase but the number of theater screens has been increased further by another 26 screens. It looks like Fox believes that SHOWMAN'S box office outlook is positive going forward? Current trends seem to indicate the domestic box office may reach $ 100 million within another week or two?

Interesting comment from the Variety forecasts for this coming weekend (3-day or 4-day) -- SHOWMAN, now on its 4th weekend, will be fighting it out with a new Neeson thriller movie and a second-weekend horror movie (Insidious). Since when did the musical genre fight strongly with an action or a horror movie It is also a movie that has been in theaters much longer ( it has legs!)

deadline.com/2018/01/the-commuter-proud-mary-jumanji-paddington-2-mlk-weekend-box-office-1202241724/The movie continues to be a box office wonder -- Based on estimates for the 4-day weekend, TGS is 4th after Jumanji, The Post with newly-expanded box office, The Commuter a new wide release...and for the weekend, we have overtaken The Last Jedi, the previous new release Insidious, and other new releases Paddington 2 and Proud Mary. Overall, TGS has already overtaken PitchPerfect3 in overall domestic box office. Greatest Showman has reduced its number of theaters ( presumably to accommodate the expansion for The Post) and this usually happens for the 4th weekend, but it still mustered great numbers. Greatest Showman is now only $ 2.2 million away from $ 100 million ( the box office magic number ). By Wednesday ( it was released on a Wednesday 4 weeks ago), there is a good chance the movie will hit that number! Must be the sing-alongs Jo

Scott Mendelson of Forbes.com is on the stubborn side -- while he recognizes now how THE GREATEST SHOWMAN beat the odds in the march for box office glory ( and struts out all the stats to support its box office triumph) -- he still calls it a " paper-thin movie" www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2018/01/14/hugh-jackman-and-michelle-williams-greatest-showman-just-broke-a-box-office-record/#2bce23f63039Excerpts -- C'mon, Mr. Menselson, admit that you did not fully appreciate its cinematic vision and how well the movie executed that! So many people, across all demos and national boundaries, have expressed pleasure and joy in the movie! Why insist that there is only one way to make a movie and make it resonate with the public? In the final analysis, it is public support ( whether through the box office or words of praise) which counts the most in appreciating art in any form! Jo

FYI, Hugh's on ELLEN tomorrow, Monday. Then on Friday, he's on THE TALK and a repeat of James Corden's LATE LATE SHOW (that great Crosswalk segment!).
