Instead of reducing the screen count further, FOX has actually increased the screen count from 478 to 764 by Friday!
Not sure if I have heard of this kind of move, for a movie that is now on its 101th day of release in the USA! Unless the movie was on a rolling release basis, especially for those who enjoyed Oscar buzz.
As of Friday ( March 30), an ESTIMATE of box office results ( Foreign figures are as of March 27) --
Where is the demand coming from ?
*those who want sing-along screenings?
*those who missed the movie in a cinema and bought the DIGITAL RELEASE but now want to see the movie on a BIG SCREEN?
*those who still want to repeat the viewing screenings?
*Or is this temporary for Easter Weekend (another major time for a shared family event)?

Hopefully, the prediction of a theatrical run reaching May 14 ( when the home video is released) comes through. But this does not take into account the open-air screenings ( with or without sing-alongs) that have been announced for the summer in the British Isles ( the UK and Ireland). Interestingly, London was not part of the premiere schedules ( Hugh went only to the NYC/Mexico/Sydney/France/Japan premieres) when it usually shows unbelievable runs for movie musicals ( and it is famous for its musical theatre shows - one example was the OKLAHOMA! revival with HJ). Did Marketing think it was unnecessary? Also, on a side note, I was wondering why an appearance in China was not planned ( it opened just a little earlier than the Japan premiere). On a personal note -- I have a Brit friend ( who also loves music and the theatre) who is celebrating her birthday on May 19. I thought a copy of the DVD (Region 2, via Amazon-uk) would make a wonderful way to greet her... On September 12, 2004, on a visit to the USA, she joined me and an American friend to see the closing show featuring The Greatest Showman, except he was called THE BOY FROM OZ then Jo

Posted on Fan Reactions earlier -- A real gift to Jackman and movies fans! Also a boon to FOX -- both movies together, LOGAN ($ 616 million) and GREATEST SHOWMAN ( $ 414 million as of now) have crossed the billion dollar mark ( $ 1.030 billion at this point)! Jo

It looks like the British Isles's love affair with THE GREATEST SHOWMAN will extend till the summer. A few summer open-air screenings have been announced, like this one --

I could be wrong -- but it does look like THE GREATEST SHOWMAN will end its theatrical run by Thursday ( Friday is the changeover day for new movies) this coming week. The DVD/BluRay is due out on Tuesday. www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=greatestshowman.htmHmm... maybe the Domestic Side ( USA/Canada) will complete its run at around $ 173 million! Other countries like the UK and Japan may still continue their theatrical runs, although in the UK there are bookings for summer open-air screenings mostly at stately homes. What a run!!

Per Box Office Mojo : ESTIMATE as of April 8, 2018 --
EDIT : FINAL figures
From Deadline --
Screen count on the Domestic side ( USA/Canada) is now down to 248, as the theatrical run likely winds down in the next few days. The BluRay/DVD is released on Tuesday ( April 10). Hopefully, the Domestic results crosses over to $ 173 million.
Comparative worldwide grosses for two other recent movie musicals : La La Land ($446 Million) and Les Miserables ($ 441 million)... Had the box office results been stronger in China (and maybe South Korea and a few other European countries), The Greatest Showman could have been in the $ 450-$475 million range. Both La La Land and Les Miserables almost reached $ 300 million in overseas receipts... Could it have been wrong scheduling or misdirected marketing?

It looks like it is not yet end of the line for THE GREATEST SHOWMAN on the domestic side. Screen count has been reduced to 209! The ESTIMATE for worldwide gross is now closing in on $ 425 million! EDIT: Final On the domestic side -- with the release of the BluRay/DVD and onDemand and Rental options -- will it immediately kill the demand in cinemas? Or will Fox see an opportunity to tempt people to come back or see for the first time how good a theatrical screening is compared to home entertainment options? I would not be surprised if they did keep it on in cinemas to give those who now regret not seeing it on the big screen a chance to amend their ways I also wonder why there is a lot of publicity now for the theatrical sing-along versions? Hmmm... Jo

Per Deadline --
*It's still playing in 13 overseas markets!
*The increase in Australia is suprising -- maybe they are just releasing the sing-along version there. I wonder - is this a new strategy from Fox -- is it re-releasing or expanding release with a heavy intro of the sing-along version?
*Can Japan and the UK ( and maybe with Australia) still provide the numbers for the movie to reach the range of $ 255- $ 260 million from the international market? Those 3 countries have outdistanced all others very significantly in terms of performance at the box office and the album charts!

Better late than later ( on my part) reporting the analysis of VULTURE on the SHOWMAN'S leather-encased long legs www.vulture.com/2018/02/the-sneaky-slow-burn-success-of-the-greatest-showman.htmlExcerpts -- As a patient observer to the scene, I think it was not just the marketing constant support of the movie...but social media revelations about repeat patronage ( and it was not just "2 x" but reports of multiple-viewing) which gave a solid indication that people were falling in love, head over heels, with THE GREATEST SHOWMAN! It was also evident that the unexpected and steep rise to the top of the music charts was a very strong indication that the movie's music was helping to push the appeal of the movie in an extraordinary way! Just saw a movie on cable ("Their Finest" - about WW 2, as it happened in England) -- at the end, a middle-aged British woman told her female neighbor at the cinema ( whom she did not recognize was the scriptwriter), almost a little teary-eyed : " I have seen it 5 times! It is our picture!"I wonder if many fans of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN had the same sense of kinship towards the movie

While the movie was aimed and pitched as a family-friendly movie, the subtle distinction made by Mendelson above is the formula that worked unexpectedly and with tremendous success. We can verify this with the amount and kind of covers that the movie's musical score inspired...and by other stories that told of its appeal from toddlers to grandpas/grandmas! And the phenomenon was true not only in the USA -- the movie, with its winning musical score and its messages, appealed to a wide swatch in the overseas market. And in both the USA and overseas, there have been a number of professional artists who have readily used the songs for their recorded or live performances! Even reality TV musical shows such as American Idol and The Voice found contestants singing songs from the score to pitch their talent... Plus the amount of related merchandise ( from costumes to props) showed an extraordinary fascination with the characters of the movie.
I didn't monitor the success of Black Panther -- but did we see a similar form of fandom to The Greatest Showman?

Remember last year's CinemaCon when Hugh presented publicity clips from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and Fox used COME ALIVE for its ending presentation?
This comment from this year's CinemaCon from a movie press editor ( Playlist/Wrap/etc) --

I don't know what Russ Fischer is talking about -- these tweets from last year, mainly from the movie press say otherwise ( thank goodness it is easy to go back to previous posts, so long as you can recall the classification) --

The supreme irony is that another movie press writer for THE WRAP ( to which Russ Fisher is a contributor) actually thought very highly of the presentation at CinemaCon -- www.thewrap.com/hugh-jackmans-greatest-showman-footage-stuns-emotional-inclusive-musical-number/That is why I am sometimes cynical of the movie press. Did Mr. Fischer fall asleep during the 2017 presentation? Was he part of the "pre-hate" movie press brigade which was very negative to THE GREATEST SHOWMAN? Was he not aware that THE WRAP came away very positive from that presentation? Or did he just want to attract attention to his lame tweet? Hmmm.... Jo

All those tweets would indicate that the presentation at CinemaCon definitely did not "fall flat." Fischer was either predisposed to hate the movie or he was too busy trimming his beard to pay attention to the excitement on screen.

Maybe because people think that with the release of the Digital version plus the coming release of the discs, that the big screen version will soon leave their cinemas.
