Atlantic Records will release the official soundtrack album for the movie musical The Greatest Showman. The album features the original songs from the movie composed by Academy Award winners Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) and performed by the movie’s cast.

Two tracks, The Greatest Show and This Is Me, will already be available to download tomorrow.

The full soundtrack will be released on December 8, 2017.

The Greatest Showman is directed by Michael Gracey and stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. The movie is inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum and revolves around a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. The musical will be released in theaters nationwide on December 25 by 20th Century Fox. Visit the official movie website for updates.

There were early on-set interviews. One of those touched on a few things that puts context to some of the songs, which did not register with me initially.

That stirring song that plays over the trailer is sung by Lettie Lutz, the circus's Beaded Lady, played by stage actor Keala Settle. "This Is Me" isn't easily confused with any of La La Land's old Hollywood numbers; it's a pop anthem that wouldn't sound out of place on Katy Perry's Prism album — though it's Settle's forceful and emotional vocal performance that took her all the way through the early-stage readings of the script (which, for musicals, are usually populated by lesser known actors who don't expect to be cast) to filming a big-budget holiday release.


Her come-to-Jesus number is a response to Barnum turning away from his circus family when he's accepted by high society.

It hurts so much, Settle says, because Barnum gives Lettie a life when he first meets and validates her.
"He looks at her and says, 'You’re beautiful and I’ve never seen someone like you in my life, and your voice takes my breath away, will you be a part of the circus?,'" Settle explains, with tears in her eyes. "And the second that that happens, and she realizes that one person, sorry, gives a sh*t about who she is, it's enough for her to at least start trying to repair who she is as a woman."


So though The Greatest Showman leans towards spectacle where La La Land chooses intimacy, the hope is that audiences will still emotionally connect to its band of outcasts and the visionary who brought them out of the shadows and in front of a crowd. "To celebrate one’s otherness," is how Abdul-Mateen sums up the film's message. "That if you’re different you still matter. And you matter, period."

One clip that seems to be in the running for the most representative of the movie's vision is the intro to the opening and closing number, "The Greatest Show." Jackman stands underneath bleachers waiting to take the center ring, while audience members without an inch of space between any of them rhythmically stomp in anticipation above. It's inspired by scene in Steve Jobs, since Gracey considers both men similarly revolutionary. It's also a very unsubtle, Queen-esque reminder that The Greatest Showman isn't a period piece. The director describes it as "a storybook world. It’s not being faithful to the period; we have things that weren’t invented yet, but it feels of its own universe."

I didn't realize that THE GREATEST SHOW is a song title & production number by itself. I thought initially that it was just a typo error ( Greatest Show instead of Greatest Showman). If it's the opening song ( will there be an overture, too ), then it must have tremendous musical power and strong emotional appeal!


Someday, will this soundtrack become the original cast recording of a stage adaptation

One name that did not register with me is LOREN ALLRED - she sings NEVER ENOUGH ( including a reprise). Her name is not on the cast list but I have seen her retweet that photo of Broadway singers doing the workshop of the score. Was she part of that group?

And I wonder if we will see/hear more music in the movie itself? There is no song identified with the character of Jenny Lind ( the professional singer in Barnum's career as an impresario), no mention of Rebecca Ferguson who portrays her. In an interview, she mentions her singing in the movie to a huge audience...

Indeed, Ferguson’s resilience has a daring to it, too. She’s an actor with a healthy disdain for the comfortable – she mentions several times the abhorrence of letting things become “boring” – and so launched without hesitation into the Mission: Impossible’s stunts, or into the shoes of legendary Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind for The Greatest Showman, out later this year. As a musical based on the life of circus mogul PT Barnum, with an original score by La La Land’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, she was, of course, offered the chance simply to lip sync her way through the role.

But Ferguson declined. Instead, she trained rigorously for a month to deliver her own performance, which will then be blended together with the work of a professional opera singer. She’s unsure how much of her own voice will end up in the finished film, but the importance wasn’t in the results.

She says, “I thought to myself, I am going to stand there and I’m going to sing this song in front of 600 people and that’s what I’m going to do. It was nerve-wracking, but I did it.”

From what I heard, in the movie Jenny Lind will not be portrayed as a professional opera singer but more of a mainstream singer. Could Loren Allred be the singer whose voice is fused with her?

First -- The Greatest Show!!

Wow -- it is addictive!! You feel like dancing...and singing...and dancing to it... and clapping --

It has such a pop sound that is very engaging, very contemporary ...and dare I say it, very millennial! And Hugh -- you could trace his "new" voice and he is very much up to the task

If this is nominated for an Oscar -- that audience at the Kodak ( does the theatre still carry that name?) will be bopping like mad



This Is Me is sort of anticlimactic for me -- maybe because we have heard it so many times...but it is still a very poignant and rousing song of inspiration! Its theme is so much of the moment! And Keala - what a treasure! This song is going to be anthemic!



Have you noticed the background music and whatever you call all those sounds -- I think this was done primarily for the album release. I have a feeling it will be a little different in the movie. But both versions will be fantastic, each one suiting what the music is inspiring you!


I think I am talking without sense -- too excited at the moment

I can't stop listening to "The Greatest Show." So catchy and thrilling. Especially the first couple of minutes. My compliments to HJ's new vocal coach--and to Pasek & Paul, whose work I have been a fan of since DOGFIGHT off-Broadway years ago.

By the way, Jo, if you listen to Lloyd Griffiths' cover of the song (as you posted above), you can make out some of the missing lyrics in your post.

The First Song From ‘The Greatest Showman’ is a Spectacular Number You Need to Listen to ASAP

The greatest show on Earth will be coming at you this Christmas when Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya sing their way into theaters for their new musical drama The Greatest Showman. The movie will tell the story of how P. T. Barnum (Jackman) started the Barnum & Bailey Circus and we finally have our first listen to the film’s ensemble song “The Greatest Show” and let me tell you,  it is straight fire!

Even though the movie will be taking place in the late 1800s/early 1900s, the music is anything but dated. “The Greatest Show” is a fun, upbeat and powerful number reminiscent to “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen. Hugh Jackman takes the lead, but expect to hear some awesome solos by  Keala Settle (around the 3-minute mark) and Zac Efron ( 3:54 mark) as well!

The reason it may sound reminiscent to Dear Evan Hansen is because the original music was written by the same team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known together as Pasek and Paul. The two have also had original songs in the TV show Smash and most recently they wrote the lyrics for La La Land, where they ended up taking home the Academy Award for “City of Stars”. So, in addition to this first number being an absolute standout, it’s safe to say that the rest of the music will be just as fantastic!
