I am a retired O.R. nurse and we would sometimes have to listen to what the surgeon wanted, which could be weird or not to our liking. My favorite doctor was a neurosurgeon who was also a Beatles fan, so whenever I circulated for him, he would play The Beatles. There was a GYN oncologist who let me play Once Before I Go for him, but that was it!

On the charts and in our headphones, the musical soundtrack dominated 2018.

“Shallow.” “This Is Me.” “All the Stars.” Songs transcended the big screen into radio rotation and streaming playlists, becoming as popular as, well, pop music. Just how consumed were the tracks composed for the silver screen? A quick look …


The dominance of The Greatest Showman can’t be understated. The Hugh Jackman-led P.T. Barnum musical biopic snowballed the success of a late 2017 theatrical release into consistent sales and streaming dominance throughout the year. The Greatest Showman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack wasn’t only the biggest soundtrack of last year, it was one 2018’s biggest albums … period.

It became the first album of 2018 to sell 1 million copies, per Nielsen, reaching that landmark in June. The album slotted at No. 4 on the Billboard year-end chart, ahead of Ed Sheeran, Cardi B, Travis Scott and Post Malone. It reached at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in Jan. 2018, nearly a month after release — the first album in a year to hit No. 1 without debuting in the top slot. BuzzAngle Music year-end report ranks the album as the fourth-most consumed in the United States last year, citing physical sales at 1.2 million and online streams at 195 million.

The pop culture momentum behind The Greatest Showman led to a covers album release last fall. Coined The Greatest Showman: Reimagined, Panic! At The Disco, Kelly Clarkson and more led talent for new takes on the tracks. The legend of Showman continues to grow in 2019 as Jackman plans to take the songs on a global arena tour.



Heading into the upcoming Grammy and Academy Award ceremonies, the Black Panther soundtrack continues to snag award season buzz. Curated by Kendrick Lamar and led by SZA collaboration “All The Stars,” Lamar and company earned a leading eight Grammy nominations — including album, song and record of the year. “All The Stars” competes with A Star Is Born anthem “Shallow” (more on that later) for the best original song at the Oscar next month.


A musical companion to one of Marvel’s biggest box office (about $1.3 billion globally) and cultural successes (earning an Academy Award “Best Picture” nomination), Black Panther: The Album landed at No. 12 on the Billboard year-end album chart.

Debuting at No. 1 on Billboard in February, Nielsen reports the soundtrack scored the most single-week streams ever for a soundtrack with 138.9 million.

Black Panther faces formidable award season competition with Lady Gaga and A Star Is Born.
Bradley Cooper’s cinematic ode to Old Hollywood, Gaga’s pipes on “Shallow” and a ruggedly unflappable cut to “Just wanted to take ‘nother look at ya” translated to stellar sales last fall for the Star soundtrack.

With songs penned by Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell, Gaga, Cooper, Mark Ronson and more, the soundtrack moved a whopping 231,000 equivalent units in its debut week, Nielsen reports. It was the biggest week posting for a soundtrack in three-and-a-half years.While below Showman and Panther at No. 37 on Billboard’s year-end chart, BuzzAngle reports Star moved the second-most physical copies, 525,736, for a soundtrack in 2018.

“Shallow” brought home the Golden Globe earlier this month for best original song; the song earned fours nomination, including record of the year, for the upcoming Grammy Awards.

And then there’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Sure, the film may feel a bit like Queen’s Wikipedia page come to life, but an $800 million international box office says that people are still willing to drop cash in hopes of hearing “Don’t Stop Me Now” blast through Dolby Atmos as Rami Malek charismatically channels Freddie Mercury.

Fitting somewhere between a live album and greatest hits compilation, Bohemian Rhapsody: The Original Soundtrack didn’t join the above albums in reaching No. 1 on Billboard. It did, however, rocket Queen back into the charts for the band’s 17th top 40 release. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, Queen’s highest-charting release in nearly 40 years.
The song propelled “Bohemian Rhapsody” to enter the Billboard Hot 100 for the third time in three different decades, the first tack to ever do so.

Released in November, producers continue to encourage fans to experience Rhapsody on the big screen. A sing-along version hit U.S. theaters earlier this month.

With a final note on the soundtrack's unforgettable year: Hamilton (if we’re counting cast albums, that is). The historical hip-hop story we just can’t quit continued to sell and stream steadily in 2018, landing at No. 21 on the Billboard year-end chart and moving nearly 239,000 units, per BuzzAngle. Non-stop, indeed.

The Greatest Showman extends its run at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart to a 28th week, outperforming its closest competitor by 2:1.

The cast recording now matches the performance of The Beatles’ legendary album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which logged 28 non-consecutive weeks at the summit between June 1967 and February 1968.

The Greatest Showman’s remarkable success in the UK charts has finally brought it level with one of the all-time greats: The Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Both recordings have now spent a total of 28 weeks at number one.

Sgt. Pepper first hit the top spot on its release in June 1967, staying there until November. It has since returned to number one several times, most recently in June 2017 when the album was re-released for its 50th anniversary.
The Greatest Showman has also had a broken run at the top. It held the
number one spot from January to March 2018, returning to the top several times until July. Its current spell at number one began just before Christmas.

On present form, The Greatest Showman is likely to overtake Sgt. Pepper next week and could go on to outperform a string of other landmark recordings.

Here are the targets it has to beat:



30 weeks: Please Please Me
The Beatles’ debut album hit number one in May 1963 and remained there without a break until November, when it was knocked off the top by the group’s second LP, With The Beatles.


33 weeks: Bridge Over Troubled Water
Simon & Garfunkel’s last studio album went straight to number one on its release in February 1970. It was still making return visits to the top of the chart in September 1971.


48 weeks: The King & I
The soundtrack album to the hugely successful musical film made several trips to number one between October 1956 and March 1958. The songs – written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein – included I Whistle a Happy Tune, Shall We Dance? and Getting to Know You.


70 weeks: The Sound Of Music
Another soundtrack written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It first hit number one in June 1965 and made repeat visits to the top until November 1968.

115 weeks: South Pacific
A blockbuster of a hit, this soundtrack album ended up spending more than two years at the top of the UK album charts. It first went to number one in November 1958 and stayed there without a break until March 1960. It went on returning to the top spot until September 1961. Songs included There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame, Happy Talk and Some Enchanted Evening, and were once again written by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The soundtrack of The Greatest Showman has sold best in the U.S., though its chart dominance is even greater in some other countries. In Britain, the soundtrack has just matched a run at the top by the Beatles more than 50 years ago.

In the U.K., it was the best-selling album of 2018, with 1.6 million combined units; it was in the top 5 for every single week of the year and shifted 69,000 units in Christmas week alone. Last year, it matched records for annual chart placings by Adele and the Beatles as soundtracks made a comeback.

The movie itself is now well clear of $400 million at the global box office and now helped by home purchases. It was the biggest-selling film of 2018 in Britain, with 2.69 million discs and digital copies sold, according to the British Association for Screen Entertainment. It held on into January to lead the first Official Film Chart of 2019, ahead of another movie musical, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

The Greatest Showman will trek to its final destiny decades from now -- not just as an album, but maybe more as a movie classic! What is a miracle is that both movie and album went on their way to unexpected and ever-growing success!

Hugh was just so excited that such a comparison is being made. I think he knows how very far down the road he has to go with musicals to even be close to Beatlemania! Hey, I remember doing a Liverpool tour and we were so excited just to see the streetmarker "Penny Lane" in that short visit of where it all started for the "Fab Four"!
