Among the best movie musicals of the 20th century!
Praise indeed! Oscar winners Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, West Story! Rodgers and Hammerstein great movie musicals ( other than Sound of Music) like South Pacific, King and I, Oklahoma!, and Carousel. Film adaptations like Camelot, Hello Dolly, Funny Girl, and Man of La Mancha. In earlier times, Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris, Desert Song, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Brigadoon, Guys and Dolls, Pal Joey, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Student Prince, High Society, and others. I am sure I missed quite a few beloved musicals!
I think what The Greatest Showman has done unexpectedly is to reawaken the love for musicals among movie fans once again! La La Land did not do that - it looks like it only catered mostly to film buffs! The Greatest Showman reached out and won over an overwhelming number of people across all ages, across gender class, and across borders around the world!
It brought joy! It brought resonance! It reawakened the love for music and dance in a fine story which the audience loved!
