It's been a year since I last saw THE GREATEST SHOWMAN.
I watched it again...but after putting some distance from my last viewing... to give me the feeling of a fresh look.
I am even more impressed now with the movie.
It is a beautiful tale, a journey of a man and the people he takes along in his journey. The journey takes him to unexplored heights while he stumbles sometimes in reaching for the pinnacle of success. The lessons learned in his journey gives him pride and satisfaction while not realizing that he also needs to look back once in a while.
That is why I have come to fully appreciate even more why FROM NOW ON is my favorite song from the movie, from this story inspired by the life of a great impresario. The song is his song of redemption! It takes him back from the beginning of his journey, the gratifications and pitfalls, and the realization of what is important in his life. His resolve is the new anthem in his heart! This reminds me of a similar journey of redemption, that of Valjean, who received the grace of redemption from the kindness of another, guiding him to a journey of service to his fellowmen.
I did wonder whether this is a key aspect in a role that Hugh looks for occasionally in a storyline?
Everything is well pieced together and I cannot appreciate the prejudices of some critics regarding the veracity of the story of a real life person. That was not the point of this tale - it is inspired by the events in the life of such a public figure but the characterizations in the movie were finely plotted and told.
The music enhances the movie's worth and sense of joy. But it is not the main or only focus. That it enhances and further dramatizes the story and the characters are its main contribution. Can there be a better example of a musical theatre song which advances the plot than "The Other Side"? Or the sense of poignancy in Charity's song of introspection, "Tightrope"? And the dreams of a young boy...which extends to his manhood -- driving him in the pursuit of his life longing -- "A Million Dreams" fully captures those yearnings and ambitions.
Maybe it was not the main storyline ...but the theme of inclusivity is also well-explored and supported in this movie. Hence the appeal of "This Is Me" and "Rewrite the Stars". Based on the new guidelines to qualify for an Oscar Best Picture in the near future, this will cross off all the requirements! But to me, that part is simply the means to lead to Barnum's impresario success.
The show makes use of spectacle in full and with great extravagance-- all captured in the song and dance number The Greatest Show. It bookends the story so well - the alpha and the omega!
But if you simply pin it down to its basic tale of a man's journey and how well he acquits himself -- it it already well-worth the attention that this movie and its music has enjoyed. It has brought joy and warmth! It has returned the movie musical genre to its rightful place -- to appreciate a storyline and characters and the lovely music that is entwined in how a great story is told!

Amazing how one material is juxtaposed with another to put on another way to entertain Be sure to put on the sound when you open the clip.

Each song has its fans!
One of the hardest to emulate ( sing, dance, act) but THE OTHER SIDE is pure fun!

I never thought this movie and its songs would exert such a great appeal to a very young fanbase. Except for A MILLION DREAMS, the songs express mature sentiments...but look at how the youngsters have adopted them as their own

It looks like the songs and production numbers ( kids love the opening scene of THE GREATEST SHOW) of The Greatest Showman will live for a long, long time. Three years hence since they were first heard, those musical numbers are still being relived by so many kids...and the not-so-kids-anymore Jo

He's a cute showman - I wonder if he's homemade...or something offered somewhere?

The movie The Greatest Showman will not be forgotten for a long time... as long as new kids are born ...and learn to watch the movie. Generations after generations
