I was supposed to be flying to London tonight, but my traveling companion chickened out! 😢 Rescheduling for Aug. 2022.

Looks like cramped space - maybe his trailer, if he has one for The Son?

I finally got my copy of the book of THE SON - actually the English translation ( as it was staged in London) of the original play by Florian Zeller staged in Paris! It reached me after a circuitous route - it is available on Amazon both on Kindle and hard copy. I chose the hard copy but the original and replacement orders I placed never reached me ( fortunately, I was refunded for both failures to deliver). Then I thought it could actually be available on Amazon-France given its origin. Voila - that did the trick, even if I had to gingerly navigate the French ordering system ( guessing some of the time) - I did not know that you can actually ask for an automatic English translation of all the pages on Amazon-France. It was sent via the courier DHL. I have read it for the first time! I find that the story is centered mostly on the character to be played by Hugh and to some extent also focuses on the character of his son. But it is the inner turmoil wracking the father (Hugh's role) trying to cope with an unravelling crisis...which can be traced to family crises that are riven by divorce and remariage of one parent. The son's issue is of course that of mental health stability and the story is about how the father begins to realize how serious this might turn out to be! Alongside, the father's first and second wife also play roles, although less significant. I wonder if Hugh accepted the role, not just for the dramatic acting challenge, but because his own childhood was affected by a similar crisis? I don't think this is a type of role that Hugh has played before -- it will require all his dramatic abilities ( via face, body language and vocal ability) to give full life to the character of Peter/Pierre. They have not announced the casting of the son Nicholas which is also key. I think the characters that will be played by Laura Dern and Vanessa Kirby are not as key as the father and son. Of course my thoughts are based on the play. We do not know what changes may be made by Zeller&Hampton for the film adaptation. Just a guess - but I have a feeling that Zeller might add a backstory about Pierre/Peter (briefly mentioned in the play) and his Dad for a fuller capture of the character of Peter? If there is a way that director Zeller can complete post production by mid- December( that would only be 2 months as the movie started filming in mid-August and will likely take at least some 2 months to complete filming) - it would be such a gift to see this movie have a short end-year theatrical run so it can qualify for Oscar consideration. SONY Pictures now owns the film rights distribution. Of course that is only wishful thinking on my part My one wish is to see Hugh perform this role in both a stage and a film adaptation! More wishful thinking Jo

This is interesting -- *Will the baby son be replaced by a young boy? *or will the teenage son be replaced by a young boy? Or is this another character in the story? Why is the casting in Paris when the movie will be filmed in NYC? Jo Do you remember about the casting news for an 6-7 yrs old who can speak English fairly well ( even if French) and will likely be involved in a late filming in September for some seaside scenes? There is no mention at all of such a scene in the play version I read -- I suspect that Florian Zeller will add something to the film adaptation -- maybe more lookback scenes on Peter/Pierre's own youth where he is supposed to have a controlling father. Pierre/Peter overcame those childhood struggles with his Dad (and maybe the new scenes will show that?) as he himself as father to Nicholas is thinking how he can avoid what made him very unhappy with his own Dad? Just guessing, of course, but I will be glad to see Zeller expand the story of Peter! Jo

His costume looks like from another time. Nothing in the book/play says when the story takes place. Zeller & Hampton may have put in additional refinements in the adaptation.
Hugh looks so calm and in a pleasant mood off-set...
but trust me, the play is anything but...
such an emotionally-driven study of family relationships.
And the character of Hugh (Peter/Pierre) does have a devastatingly emotional denouement!

I found this interview with Florian Zeller, before he won his Oscar.
It's around 16 minutes long --
I was surprised that he was very articulate in the English language... and when talking about his filmmaking vision, quite eloquent!
How many directors start as successful playwrights? Then to write his own screenplay, even if English is not his first language. And his reason why he eventually became the film director -- that he wants to follow through his artistic intentions when he wrote it... to see that these translate as he wanted to on film.
I am sure Hugh is delighted to work with the likes of him -- Hugh has already said that he enjoys/looks for projects by writer cum directors. I think I prefer this kind of project collaborations for Hugh. I don't necessarily buy that he should seek the famous directors ( sometimes they have been in the spotlight too long that I am not sure they still have fresh perspectives because fans expect them to produce the same thing over and over).
He also doesn't seem to have a temperament, just a straightforward artistic focus. ! just hope this collaboration between the two will bear fruit for both of them!

Since he is the Production Designer for The Son, does this mean that they expect to complete filming in 2 weeks's time ...because he said he will be involved in another project then?

Shepperton Studios ( part of Pinewood) is the one of the largest film studios in the UK.

Chiswick is in West London. www.hortonandgarton.co.uk/living-in-chiswick/Shepperton Studios is in Surrey, west of London. It is south of Heathrow airport and north of Weybridge where both John Lennon and Ringo Starr used to live in the ‘60s. Nancy
