The Telluride Film Festival (TFF) is a film festival held annually in Telluride, Colorado during Labor Day weekend (the first Monday in September). The 48th Telluride Film Festival took place on September 2–6, 2021.

The 78th annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 1 to 11 September 2021

The 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, the 46th event in the Toronto International Film Festival series, was held from September 9 to 18, 2021.[1]

Release Date/Prediction: Sony Pictures Classics haven’t dated the project but we’re predicting that this will be a Telluride, Venice, TIFF and BFI London quadruple selection.

Assuming the filmfests retain their traditional dates in the past - it's possible the "September 5–11, 2022" scheduled
break from his Music Man run is being reserved for the filmfest possibilities for THE SON?

The BFI London Film Festival was held last year from "6 to 17 October 2021". Hugh takes another break from October 10–16, 2022.

We don't have any word yet on when a trailer will be released...when the movie will be released...or if it will go the film festival circuit ( perhaps in the fall, if the breaks in Hugh's TMM schedule are to go by).

But before THE SON was filmed as an adaptation, the play was very successfully staged in London.

The Son
Human Swiss army knife novelist, playwright, theatre director, screenwriter and director hit pay dirt with his directorial debut The Father (review). Among the top new voices in 2020 film calendar year, Florian Zeller‘s sophomore project The Son was quickly mounted with a fresh trio of actors in Vanessa Kirby, Laura Dern, Hugh Jackman plus good luck charm Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins. Filming took place in August of last year with filming taking place in London, NYC, and France. Zeller reteams with Ben Smithard and from the looks of it – work with a lot more locations this time out. Zeller is producing with Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Joanna Laurie and Christophe Spadone.


Gist: Adapted by Zeller and Christopher Hampton, this focuses on Peter (Jackman) as his busy life with new partner Emma (Kirby) and their baby is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife Kate (Dern) turns up with their teenage son, Nicholas. The young man is is troubled, distant and angry, playing truant from school for months. Peter strives to be a better father, searching to help his son with those intimate and instinctive moments of family happiness. But the weight of Nicholas’ condition sets the family on a dangerous course.

Release Date/Prediction: Sony Pictures Classics haven’t dated the project but we’re predicting that this will be a Telluride, Venice, TIFF and BFI London quadruple selection.

Someone else was predicting late last year that THE SON could be among 20 possibilities for Cannes. Cannes is the most famous and glamorous of the filmfests and draws some 200,000 visitors

But --

*Will it be completed in time for the submission deadline ( Cannes takes place in the second half of May but entries must be submitted by March 11)
*The only thing going for it for inclusion at Cannes - is that Florian Zeller is one of France's most celebrated
playwrights and they may want his work presented there.
*Hugh does not have a break scheduled at that time with The Music Man... and the Cannes filmfest looks like it will coincide when Tony voting is happening on Broadway
*His breaks in Sept/Oct may coincide with the fall filmfests.

Also, the awards season start in the fall with the aforementioned filmfests. Although some award movies came out of Cannes. The Father was fist seen at Sundance filmfest in 2021.

With the 2022 edition of the Berlinale having drawn to a close and — due to its omicron-impacted, scaled-back nature — perhaps not providing the sort of film fest buzz many had hoped for, eyes are now turning towards Cannes as an opportunity to finally fire up the all-star, post-pandemic big guns.

Organizers are currently gearing up for an in-person event May 17-28, an edition of the French festival that much of the industry is hoping will be the first grand and truly global movie get-together in more than two years.

But the question remains, which films will be going and which major names could be skipping up the Palais steps for an embrace — or elbow tap — with Thierry Fremaux?


While it’ll likely be at a month or two before any official announcements are made, The Hollywood Reporter has put together an entirely theoretical lineup of films that could be in contention for an official selection slot.

It’s an impressive list of features, including the latest from the likes of Baz Luhrmann, David Cronenberg, Kelly Reichardt, Ruben Ostland, Maria Schrader, Luca Guadagnino, Wes Anderson, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Florian Zeller, with stars such as Tom Hanks, Kristen Stewart, Tom Cruise, Carey Mulligan, Timothee Chalamet, Margot Robbie, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern.

It’s also — it should be noted — a list based on little more than production statuses, industry rumors, wild speculation and THR‘s own wish list of films the team would like to see help mark the triumphant return of the most famous film festival on the planet. So, essentially, it should be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

THE SON — Florian Zeller

French playwright-turned-filmmaker Zeller made a major impact with his debut feature The Father, which earned a best adapted screenplay Oscar and a best actor for Anthony Hopkins in 2021. His follow-up, The Son — starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and Vanessa Kirby and shot last year — would be a buzzy addition to the lineup, but whether it’ll be ready in time remains to be seen.

The main reason why THE SON, if it is completed in time for submission to the Cannes Committee, would be a buzzy addition is because Zeller is a celebrated playwright in his own country. Add to that is the awards triumph of THE FATHER in 2021.

If it becomes part of Cannes, can Hugh make it to the Festival?

May 17-28 could be the time when Tony voters may get invited to see THE MUSIC MAN, assuming that the Tonys will be held in the first two weeks of June ( as in the past before the pandemic).

The official eligibility cut-off date will be Thursday, April 26, 2018, for all Broadway productions opening in the 2017-2018 season. Productions that meet all other eligibility requirements and open on or before the eligibility date are considered eligible for 2018 Tony Award nominations.

The Nominations for the 2018 Tony Awards will be announced on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.

The latest Opening Night for a show in 2022 is Macbeth ( with Daniel Craig) with an Opening Night of April 28, 2022.


Since it was not part of Hugh Jackman's vacation break, maybe Zeller did not think he could complete the film by the Cannes deadline for feature films of March 11, 2022, when entries may have to be submitted for consideration. Although if the filming wrapped in early October 2021 (for Hugh), can Zeller complete post-production before March 11? A bit too close!

Or maybe he and Hugh knew that that time in the run of The Music Man will also be awards season on Broadway?

Zeller worked for inclusion of THE FATHER in a few filmfests in 2021. So being premiered in Cannes will not necessarily preclude participation in the fall festivals for THE SON.

In his podcast with best mate Gus Worland, Gus asked him if there is anything in his work that has changed him as a person.

The second he mentioned was The Boy from Oz - which was not surprising - because he said it made him take more risks in his line of work.

Surprisingly, the first he mentioned was his future movie release The Son. He called it an intense drama and he said it changed him somehow as a person. I wonder if he referring to a change in perspective as a father and how views his own family unit? Or could he be referring to the impact of mental health issues on family relationships?

At any rate, hopefully, this movie turns out very well in the eyes of critics and movie audiences.

So, other than hopefully an Oscar in the future, what else lies in store for Hugh Jackman? The answer to that question lies with Oscar-Winning Florian Zeller, who is adapting his stage play The Son for cinema. The Son will star Hugh Jackman as Peter, a man enjoying his life with his new partner and their new baby. Peter’s life will be turned upside down when his ex-wife shows up with his teenage son Nicholas in tow. Nicholas wishes to live with his father, and his troublesome personality tests the family dynamic that Peter has cultivated. The film is expected to premiere sometime this year.

After a last-minute surge, "The Father" was the likely runner-up for Best Picture in 2020, earning two Oscar wins in the process for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Florian Zeller returns this year with "The Son," not a sequel but part of an anthology following the same themes as "The Father." With Hugh Jackman leading the film, alongside Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Hopkins, and newcomer Zen McGrath, there's plenty of pedigree on the project worth getting excited about. I'm hesitant to predict "The Son" to repeat the same high-level success as "The Father," but we need to keep an eye on it.

As one Oscar season ends, another begins. We're three months into 2022, so it's time for our way-too-early Oscar predictions for 2022. It's never too soon to dive into the potential contenders for the year and analyze how they might factor into the race. Of course, being nearly a full year until the Oscars, think of this more as a guide of films to keep an eye on rather than legitimate predictions. Still, it's always fun to see how close we could get this far out. Check out our early 2021 predictions here.

Before listing my official predictions, please take a look at the dozens of contenders we're keeping an eye on as we journey toward the 95th Academy Awards. Remember that plenty of films are not yet on our radar this far out. For instance, I anticipate at least one non-English language film in the eventual Best Picture lineup, but it's more challenging to know what those contenders are at this point. The same goes for smaller independent films from newer filmmakers that will hopefully break out at the fall festivals. Still, there are several films from established filmmakers competing for awards this year, and these are just some of the films we'll anticipate along the way.

One thing though -- it seems 2022 will be a more normal year...and winning against full competition is going to be a
more exhilarating win!

Just as I thought - the prospects for The Son & Hugh derive, at this point, from the artistic success of The Father.

One thing that the predictor did not know --

*In London, where The Son was staged as a play -- it was said in some reviews to be even more dramatically powerful than The Father. Both the son and the father characters were hailed as outstanding. Hope the young actor playing the son does not outshine Hugh. The son has some very poignant scenes

*Zeller is not just a lucky newcomer filmmaker - he is a very much celebrated playwright & writer in his native France. He is a vaunted storyteller with a lot of flair. Besides, the French can really write about monumental characters (Valjean in LesMis, for one )
