Hopefully, there will be a very strong campaign for The Son. Hope Tom Rothman does not stint on the campaign. Btw, The Father was also a Sony release.

Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby and Anthony Hopkins star in “The Son,” writer-director Florian Zeller’s follow-up to the Academy Award and BAFTA Award winning “The Father.” The film is adapted from Zeller’s acclaimed stage play by Zeller and Christopher Hampton, who is Oscar nominated for adapting “The Father” with Zeller, and who won an Oscar with “Dangerous Liaisons,” and was Oscar nominated with “Atonement.”

“The Son” is set in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Washington. Peter (Jackman) has a busy life with new partner Emma (Kirby) and their baby. This is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife Kate (Dern) turns up with their teenage son, Nicholas.

We sense something is amiss from the first moment we meet Nicholas. He is troubled, distant, and angry, playing truant from school for months – both son and mother need his father’s help. Nicholas’s wish is to live with his father for a change.

Peter strives to be a better father, searching to help his son with those intimate and instinctive moments of family happiness – to solve, with understanding, what Nicholas is going through. But the weight of Nicholas’ condition sets the family on a dangerous course. They must do everything they can to maintain the bonds that hold them together.

Zeller said: “‘The Son’ is a deeply human story which, I believe, connects us all; I hope audiences will be profoundly moved by this family’s journey. Both Hugh and Laura naturally convey great warmth, compassion, and vulnerability… inviting our audience to embrace and feel every moment. The story is set in a vibrant and very much alive New York, an important character. The movie should make us call family and friends to tell them that they are wholly loved and not alone.”

Zeller seems such a pleasant and self-assured person - maybe because he is already a celebrated author in his native
France, mesmerized London theatre, and surprised American and universal audiences with the depth of his talent in his introductory movie The Father. He also seems very pleasant and Hugh must have enjoyed working with him.

The film is a major get for Cannes, which is framing this year’s festival as a celebratory return to cinema after two years of COVID restrictions and theater lockdowns. The festival, which runs May 17-28, is also keen to re-establish its position as the go-to platform for tentpole and award-season releases after losing ground in the past two years to Venice, which hosted such Oscar favorites as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog.

The Top Gun sequel isn’t the only high-profile title expected to touch down in Cannes this year. “The Son” (Florian Zeller)

It’s not often that an Oscar winner reprises the role that they won for, but Florian Zeller’s sequel to “The Father” will see Anthony Hopkins do just that. Like “The Father” that preceded it, “The Son” is adapted from one of Zeller’s stage plays. While “The Father” focused on a man’s battle with dementia, “The Son” shifts the focus to younger members of the family, with Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern joining the cast in leading roles. —CZ

Zeller is a Frenchman and will likely want his movie celebrated at the most famous film festival in the world, in glamorous Cannes. But is the movie finished? Hugh may not be able to attend - unless they can get a Monday evening premiere ( which may allow him to fly back to Bway for his Tuesday peformance, taking advantage of the time difference between France & the USA)?

That falls within the period when TONY voters may be invited to watch ( or watch again) The Music Man, assuming it gets Tony nominations ( announced on May 3,2022). Of course, the show can exempt a few days from Tony voters viewing time.

Toronto is slated from Sep 8- 18, 2022.
Telluride does not usually announce till much later , but the 2021 festival was held in September.

Florian Zeller’s The Son is also being mooted for a Croisette splash although an autumn festival launch would also make sense for the director’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning The Father. Vanessa Kirby and Hugh Jackman co-star as a couple with a newborn alongside Laura Dern as the ex-wife who turns up with the father’s troubled teenage son.
