An all too troubling issue of current time. This was produced much like "Marriage Story" as it was free of modern gloss and quick editing yet full of raw emotions and thankfully gave the actors room to act and let their emotions pour out. This is about a divorced family with a high school boy and the father's new wife and infant. The teen boy is depressed and while the boy can't pinpoint why the story asks if it is from the divorce, the father who broke the family unit, the new wife or just naturally. Then it focused on how each party attempts to address the boy's issues and the confusion, sadness and anger that arises. This is a raw film with believable character decisions and situations. Although, I do feel the climax was rather telegraphed yet overall, a solid effort.

From Sophocles to Shakespeare, it all comes back to family. Writers can get as high-concept as they like, but in the end, the world’s greatest storytellers recognize that nothing is more potent — not even romantic love — than the connections between children and their parents. Florian Zeller gets it. Before turning his attention to the screen, the gifted French scribe wrote at least a dozen plays, the most acclaimed of which were a trilogy focusing on how mental health issues devastate seemingly functional bourgeois families: “The Mother” (depression), “The Father” (dementia) and “The Son” (you’ll see).

Onstage, his strategy has been to keep things simple, honest and as universal as possible. In 2020, he directed Anthony Hopkins (and himself) to an Oscar with “The Father.” And now, with so many watching to see what he’ll do next, Zeller adapts his most personal play, “The Son,” about a troubled New York teenager no one seems to understand, least of all himself. “I’m not made like other people,” insists 17-year-old Nicholas (remarkable newcomer Zen McGrath, who goes head-to-head with Hugh Jackman here). “I’m in pain. All. The. Time.”



It’s a cry for help in a film where people desperately want to do the right thing, but no one seems to know what that is — or what Nicholas is capable of. That uncertainty gives “The Son” its tension: a low, subconscious dread that something terrible is going to happen, as if tragedy were inevitable, but you can’t quite be sure what form it will take. “He scares me,” Nicholas’ mother, Kate (Laura Dern, letting the character’s neediness be known), tells big-shot ex-husband Peter (Jackman) in a tone that suggests she’s admitting it for the first time. Kate has shown up at Peter’s place — a posh apartment the power lawyer shares with new wife Beth (Vanessa Kirby) and their newborn baby — at an inappropriately late hour looking for help.

Nicholas has been skipping school for nearly a month. Something is wrong, but the boy refuses to confide in Kate. Maybe Peter can reason with him, she hopes. The next day, Peter drops by, tough but concerned, and tries to pep-talk the kid out of what parents optimistically call a “phase,” but which, in fact, they may never grow out of. Peter wants his son to feel respected. In the man-to-almost-man conversation that follows, Nicholas winds up asking whether he can live with his dad, which sets the rest of “The Son” in motion.


Instead of feeling loose and lived in, Zeller’s adaptation of his own play has a slightly heightened quality, not to be confused with “theatrical”: The sets feel disconcertingly under-decorated, as if the characters were living in an Ikea showroom. The sound design has been dialed down, such that sirens and street noise (a New York near-constant) barely register. The dialogue, adapted into English with Christopher Hampton’s help, suggests what people might say in such a situation. These very concerns have fueled countless TV movies, and yet, Zeller is going for the most “tasteful” possible treatment. Instead of merely wrenching us emotionally — which “The Son” will inevitably succeed in doing anyway — he wants to get audiences thinking.

Study the dynamic between father and son carefully, and you’ll spot a fascinating trick at work, even subtler than the sleight of hand Zeller used to make audiences feel as if they were slowly losing their minds (like Hopkins’ character) in “The Father”: In the role of Peter, Jackman becomes a man caught up in his own kind of performance. The seldom-home workaholic desperately wants to be perceived as an ideal patriarch but seems to know (or suspect) deep down that he’s a failure in that department. That means Jackman is essentially playing a man playing a dad.



If you doubt this reading, consider one of the film’s defining scenes, when Peter takes a rare break from work to see his own dad (Anthony Hopkins as Anthony, a different father from “The Father”) to let him know he’s thinking of turning down a D.C. politician’s offer to oversee his campaign, since Nicholas needs him. It seems to Peter like the right call, but Anthony sees right through his agenda. “Your daddy wasn’t nice to you. So what?” he spits. “Just fucking get over it!”

And therein emerges another dimension of Jackman’s character, who hails from a generation in which shutting one’s mouth and enduring the pain is seen as a sign of personal strength. Today, emotional maturity is associated with the opposite qualities: the capacity to identify one’s trauma and accept treatment, as Nicholas tries to do. To his credit, when not too distracted with work, Peter does try to communicate with his son. It’s through one of these conversations that Peter learns that the boy is deeply traumatized by his parents’ split. This revelation isn’t offered as an “explanation” so much as a clue. Nicholas clearly feels betrayed and abandoned by his father. Life, he says, is “weighing me down.”

For Nicholas’ parents, as well as any fathers and mothers in the audience, it’s upsetting to see someone so young overwhelmed by the world around him — a state of mind McGrath plays more subtly than Laurie Kynaston did in the West End stage version, where the character scribbled on walls and upended furniture in agitation. Not this Nicholas. He’s largely a cipher, stashing a weapon under his mattress and showing an unsettling interest in his infant stepbrother (whom he sees as a replacement of sorts). This is no easy role, since the slightest bit of menace would likely sabotage the sensitivity of Zeller’s portrayal.


“The Son” isn’t an easy watch, but it’s an important one at a time when young people are very much in crisis. Just look at the statistics, and it’s clear that depression, self-harm and suicide are up in alarming rates among teenagers — and that’s even before you factor in the challenges of the pandemic. When Nicholas asks his father about the rifle he noticed in the laundry room, it’s not clear whether this disgruntled teen plans to use it on his classmates or himself. Ask Chekhov how you ought to feel for the rest of the film.

Beth is frightened, but tries her best to be a caring stepmother, as in an atypically light scene when she pressures Peter to demonstrate his “famous hip sway.” Out comes a glimpse of the goofball behind Hugh Jackman’s star persona. Between this and “Bad Education,” we’re seeing a new chapter of his career, as Jackman subsumes his natural charisma in order to suggest Peter’s fundamental insecurity: He wants to break the cycle, to be a better dad than the one he had. But he doesn’t understand what he’s up against, and in watching “The Son” play out, this family’s tragedy becomes our own, and Zeller’s warning becomes impossible to ignore.

I watched 'the father' and saw the review scores for 'the son' and as a result I held off watching for some time.. that was a mistake

On a recent plane ride I gave it a go

Wow is all I can say, the acting especially from Hugh Jackman is excellent.. this guy can act in all kind of films.. you just have to look at the depth of his talent in movies like 'Prisoners', or the Prestige.. other exceptional films to know he's not just Wolverine...

Anthony Hopkins is excellent in his cameo in this film - in fact in my opinion better than his role in the Father

The storyline is clear from the Trailor

Its a must watch and I preferred this film to its predecessor the Father.. please give it a go.

Hits a bit too close to home...

Our son, Nicholas, when he was 20, dropped out of college two weeks before his graduation. He had his graduation robes and was prepared, or so we thought, to receive his four year degree in classical guitar. When we, our little family of two boys and a girl, went to have a celebratory breakfast with him, his brother said "so Nick, are you going to graduate?", half jokingly. Nick's response was "highly unlikely".

The story of Nicholas in this well done movie resonates with our experience as parents of a severely depressed and 'lost' young man. We, like Peter and Kate, felt just as lost in dealing with our son's precarious emotional and mental state, but were desperate to find answers. We are not isolated cases for sure. Our son did go to two years of psychotherapy voluntarily, and was diagnosed with Aspergers. He, now she, also told us ten years later that he gender identified as a woman, and has now fully transitioned. But she is a brilliant, funny, loving and now happy individual.

However, at one point in her self exploration, she told us almost exactly what Nicholas told his parents, that he"did not belong here". Even recently, after her transition was complete, when she was visiting us, she told us she was a "unicorn".

It pains parents to hear all of this from their children, but we must listen to every single word they say to get them through this alive and to come out the other side content with their life.

My husband I know the depth of fear, guilt, frustration and emotional trauma that encapsulates a family going through this. This is REALLY tough subject matter to explore in a movie. Unless the actors have experienced this in their own lives, it makes it so difficult for them to accurately portray the characters in this movie. I feel Dern and Jackman did a fair enough job in portraying parents going through this with their son. But man, the depth that they would be feeling was just not evident in their portrayals, or in the movie itself. I give this movie an 8 for trying so hard yet still falling a little short.

Many parents will likely act the way Peter & Kate acted in the novie-- while they loved their son, it did not fully dawn on them how serious his mental issues were. Exactly what mostly happens in real life! The Son was not a story of how a cure was found. It is simply a familial tale of how mental health issues can affect the members of a family.

I never dared to imagine that a film could be this good.

This movie speaks a new language, it speaks my language like no film ever had before.

The acting was on point, from everyone. Just perfect. Not a single thing should have been changed. The script, the scenery, the pacing, and of course the music are heavenly.

As someone who is all too familiar with this suffering, this is the most authentic and dignified representation. The suffering of the son was of course externalised into dialogue, unfortunately we are never brave enough to talk about our suffering to bluntly, but I found it fitting. Was so glad they didn't the chliché "worst reaction imaginable" thing.

Such a brave movie, and brave acting. Zeller dealt with all of this so beautifully sensitively. The chemistry between the cast members is wonderful.

I dare say this movie gave me hope and a new perspective, because it takes this issue so seriously. As somebody who knows all of these feelings, it wasn't necessary for the script to go into detail. It was more believable to me than anything I've seen before. Don't know about those people untouched by depression, suicide and self-harm. Maybe this movie is for a specific target group.

The scene in the clinic itself was a masterpiece.

"He was so talented.

And he was so intelligent.

And so sensitive.

And he could have done so many beautiful things with his life."

That last line was a gorgeous transition from the movie back to oneself and one's own life, it was like a boost of energy and hope, and suddenly I wasn't thinking about how I don't want to exist anymore but found myself wondering: what beautiful things could I do with my life?"

May sound cheesy and I'm not. Fan of it myself but this movie was nowhere near cheesy, it was so dignified.

Simply amazng film. I don't often give out 10s for movies, but this is one of the best, touching dramatic films I have seen for a long time.

The son touches on themes very common in everyday life - broken familiies work life balance, and how much time we have for each other.

I'm quite dissapointed and a bit amazed I hadn't heard of this film, I stumbled across it and started watching it. I was littlerall yelling at the characters at some point. Laura Dern is great, but Hugh Jackman was incredible, and from the movies I Have seen him in, I would have to say this is his finest dramatrci work.

Definitely worthwhile film, and hopefully it gets more credit as time goes on.

Esteemed playwright/director Florian Zeller must have thought the transition from stage to screen wasn't too big of a deal after he and co-writer Christopher Hampton successfully transformed Zeller's renowned stage play The Father to screens in 2020, leading to a lauded critical and audience run that finished up with multiple Oscar wins.

Moving into late 2022, Zeller and Hampton's release of partial The Father prequel The Son (featuring a cameo performance from Anthony Hopkins) was about as polar opposite of a reception as you're likely to see from two dramatic features with critics calling the Hugh Jackman starring affair manipulative, audiences giving the film a major cold shoulder and awards far from coming thick and fast, despite Hugh Jackman competing in the Golden Globes thanks to his individual performance.

A major part of Zeller's three piece series of plays that also includes The Father and The Mother, The Son may be dismissed by many potential viewers due to its critical drubbing and lack of enthusiasm/chatter from across the film community but despite its confronting subject matter that refuses to give Hollywood answers, The Son is worth seeking out as one of recent memories more powerful and impactful major studio dramas.

Centred around one of Jackman's most impressive and layered performances in a long-standing career, with the beloved Australian icon as good as he's ever been as successful New York businessman and arguably not as successful husband/father Peter whose new live with a young baby and Vanessa Kirby's partner Beth is turned upside down by the arrival into their lives of Peter's troubled teenage son Nicholas who is battling to overcome significant mental illness that has seemingly sprung out of Peter's marriage breakdown with Nicholas's mother Kate, played by the always enjoyable Laura Dern.

Sharing DNA with many other similar in themes family centred dramas from long ago and more recent times, The Son has predictable patterns and set-ups but at the same time Zeller's unflinching approach to tackling the hard to explore subject matters his film deals with should be applauded and after a somewhat rocky early patch, The Son assuredly morphs into a gut-punch exploration of parenthood, mental illness and love that will leave any viewers who have clicked with the films left with some of the most emotionally charged scenes of any product in the last year.

One of the most polarising aspects of Zeller's film has been and is likely to always be the performance of young Australian actor McGrath who enters into the Hollywood scene with one of the more difficult debut roles you're likely to see and while his accent work can be distracting and early segments hard to understand, with more context and time with Nicholas the character you can begin to gain insight into why McGrath and Zeller constructed both the performance and the role in certain ways, ensuring The Son's nerve-wrecking final segments are hard to watch but equally hard to turn away from, delving into territory other films would steer clear from, giving audiences material they may struggle to come to terms with in meaningful and powerful ways.

Final Say -

Led by one of Hugh Jackman's most well-rounded leading turns and tackling material that is confronting but important to bring to life in ways such as this, The Son may not quite live up to the highs of The Father but its harsh critical and audience reaction upon release is a disservice for a film that is worth a chance or a reevaluation by those who dismissed it.
