Wolverine pushes Deadpool out of the frame and looks straight into the camera: "Hey, bub! You're in a movie theater, turn off you're f-cking phone!" He keeps cursing out the audience for their phone going off.

Deadpool hops back into frame. Hearing him talk that way made his "dick vibrate." He concludes, "Nice fourth wall break, didn't think ya had it in ya!"

I have a feeling they were inspired by that incident on Bway involving Hugh Jackman in a play called A Steady Rain, where he & Daniel Craig were playing rogue cops.

Deadpool and Wolverine director on reuniting Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman: 'Goosebumps'
Shawn Levy recalls the first moment he got the two actors back in their superhero suits.

Filmmaker Shawn Levy has worked with both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman multiple times already, from Real Steel to Free Guy to The Adam Project. But seeing his pals back in costume as Deadpool and Wolverine was another kind of experience.

"This will sound like a scripted answer, but the straight-up truth is that when they first stepped out in their costumes — it was a camera test before we shot — every one of us froze. Goosebumps," the Deadpool and Wolverine helmer tells Entertainment Weekly prior to receiving the Director of the Year award at CinemaCon.

"These are my buddies; they have been for over a decade, but those guys in those suits as those characters, they become something bigger than real people," he continues. "They become icons, and it's a crazy thing that those suits have such a power."

For the first time since 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds and Jackman share the screen together as the titular Deadpool and Wolverine, coming to theaters July 26. Levy came out earlier on Thursday to present nine minutes of footage to CinemaCon attendees.

The movie kicks off when Wade Wilson's (Reynolds) birthday celebrations are interrupted by the Time Variance Authority, the multiverse organization introduced in Disney+ series Loki, where he meets with Mr. Paradox (Succession star Matthew Macfadyen). What transpires is an R-rated jaunt across the Marvel multiverse, bringing Wade together with Logan (Jackman).

Deadpool and Wolverine marks Disney's first R-rated Marvel movie. To drive that fact home, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige dropped numerous F-bombs during the CinemaCon presentation, calling the film "f---ing awesome."

"I didn't plan on highlighting the fact that we all heard Kevin Feige swear, but when he did it three times, I realized, 'Oh s---! This is like a big grownup boy who's finally allowed to use a major potty mouth, and he's going to that well not once, not twice, but three times," Levy says. "This started off with a conversation between Ryan and me initially during Free Guy, then again very much so on Adam Project. We spent a long time writing this script together, just making each other laugh. To Kevin and Marvel, even though I had to make fun of them, there has been huge leeway, trust, and empowerment in making the movie Ryan and I had in our head."

The one thing Levy can't really talk about are all the names that have been reported and also rumored to appear in Deadpool and Wolverine, from Jennifer Garner's Elektra to previous X-Men movie characters to Taylor Swift. When asked about the latter, the filmmaker says, "I regret that I was not quicker to shut it down the first time, so I'm going to default to my very true situation, which is as much as we love each other, the fear of death is so intense in me regarding Ryan and how he desperately wants to avoid talking about all of these proliferating rumors."

At this point, who hasn't been rumored to appear in the film? "I haven't read any Tom Cruise rumors," Levy jokes. "And who knows? Maybe that's just the internet asleep at the wheel."

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: Shawn Levy on Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman's 'Lovefest' (Exclusive)

On Thursday, Shawn Levy was honored with Director of the Year award at the CinemaCon 2024 Big Screen Achievement Awards.

“Extra” spoke with Shawn, who dished on “Deadpool & Wolverine” and said it was “a lovefest” for him, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

He noted, ‘Ryan, Hugh, and I have been friends in real life for over a decade and frankly, it’s kind of amazing.”

"Ryan has profound respect for the Logan character and the 'Wolverine' legacy," he continued. "Hugh has the same deep respect for 'Deadpool' and the very groundbreaking DNA of that franchise. So, it was kind of a lovefest."

When asked how they decided which character’s name would go first in the title for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Levy answered, “Ryan and I, we wrote on this together, we produced it together. So Hugh early on was like, ‘If you want your name first, that’s as it should be.' There was nothing but love in the making of this one.”



While Ryan and Hugh like to troll each other on social media, Shawn noted, “I love the social media feud as much as the world does, but in truth, I think, frankly, I think why we love that feud is that deep down, we know these guys have nothing but love for each other, and that’s real.”

As for the audience’s reaction to the footage of the movie, Levy said, “There’s all this expectation. There’s also an amazing amount of anticipation. I could feel it in the room today when we showed some footage. Yeah, it's a very different thing, right? Hugh was gonna be done after 'Logan.' Ryan made two 'Deadpools.' Nobody knew what the future held, but we just felt that we had a story worth telling, and I think audiences are really in for a treat, come July.”

Shawn couldn’t say too much about the movie, explaining, “My friend Ryan has trained me for fear of death to try and keep my mouth shut.”

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, clarifies that although the film features Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, the Marvel movie is not to be called Deadpool 3.

The filmmaker explained in a recent interview why the movie, which also stars Hugh Jackman reprising his role of Wolverine, is not Deadpool 3 despite being the third Deadpool movie.

“As far as crafting the Deadpool and Wolverine story, I just felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles,” Levy told Screen Rant during CinemaCon. “It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s a different thing that’s very much Deadpool and Wolverine. And it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.”

Levy teased that the film is “going to be gnarly” and “it’s gonna be funny,” and ultimately “wanted to build a great time at the theater for audiences” as their main goal. The director, writer and producer said that early screenings of the film “were extremely, extremely promising.”

“I wouldn’t say that there were any big surprises, but you feel where the pace wants to tighten, you feel where you can afford to slow down and have a deeper, more durable character moment,” he added.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set to arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024. Levy is the director of film with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Reynolds and Levy credited as co-writers.

A test run of the humorous ad screened last week at CinemaCon, where theater owners were also treated to Disney execs and top talent getting corrupted by Deadpool and dropping a slew of F-bombs.

Nicole Kidman has reigned supreme at movie theaters since 2021, when she and AMC revealed an instantly meme-able spot for “We Make Movies Better,” which urged consumers to return to theaters in the wake of the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

Now, another topic of utmost concern to exhibitors might be getting some high-wattage star treatment: those darn people who won’t silence their cellphones when a movie is playing.

Last week, Marvel and Disney screened a spot that certainly felt like an in-theater PSA of sorts as part of its Deadpool & Wolverine presentation at CinemaCon.


The spot began with Deadpool telling Wolverine about his theories for Secret Wars, a reference to Marvel Studios’ upcoming crossover movie, Avengers: Secret Wars. But every time Deadpool began to say what he’d heard will happen in the movie, a cellphone rang and interrupted him.

Eventually, Wolverine had enough — and addressed the camera directly, flinging (bleeped) F-bombs at the audience and making a rather crude reference to how this was a movie theater, not “your grandma’s nursing home.” Wolverine only stopped after Deadpool calmed him down.

One source says the spot shown at CinemaCon is indeed intended to play in theaters, but the Marvel/Deadpool team is maintaining radio silence for now.

Deadpool and Wolverine previously enjoyed some big screen synergy with a spot that played in theaters ahead of 2017’s Logan, the feature that was intended as Hugh Jackman’s swan song to Wolverine. In the spot, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool witnessed a robbery in progress, and went into a phone booth to change into his costume. But by the time he changed, the robbery victim was dead. Afterwards, Deadpool mentioned that Logan probably would have saved the man, and proceeded to speak in an Australian accent, a nod to Jackman’s natural speaking voice.



One thing is certain — Reynolds’ foul-mouthed Deadpool is having quite the effect on Disney executives as they prepare to release Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie. Sony Pictures’ chief Tom Rothman is infamous for using the F-word on stage at CinemaCon. But Disney? Never, or least not until now.

“Deadpool & Wolverine is fucking awesome. And the reason I can say that … is that it’s an R-rated movie,” Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige declared on stage (he uttered the expletive two more times). Director Shawn Levy also dropped the F-bomb.

Disney global distribution chief and presentation emcee Tony Chambers also got in on the action, but saved his F-bomb for Alien: Romulus when recounting how original Alien director Ridley Scott described the director Fede Alvarez’s upcoming film. “Ridley said, and I quote, ‘It’s fucking great.” As an Irishman, though, Chambers decided to revert to the Irish version and use the the word “fecking.”

Barry Jenkins caught the bug, too, when talking about his December family movie Mufasa: The Lion King. “This is a massive fucking film,” he said. “And it was my job to fill it with massive heart.”

As the mild-mannered Chambers explained those F-bombs minutes earlier, “Apologies, but I’ve been corrupted too.”
